Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this beautiful desire to not follow your own personal goals but to receive true vision from God, and we thank God with you that He does not change like shifting shadows and that He is faithful to fulfill what He reveals.

We love your heart in quoting Proverbs 29:18, and we want to encourage you in what that verse truly means. In the World English Bible it says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. True vision is not merely a personal dream or ambition, but divine revelation, God making His will and His Word known to us so we do not wander without restraint. When we seek vision from God we are seeking to see as He sees and to walk in the path He has already prepared for us, for His Word says For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. And again I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. Psalm 32:8.

We also rejoice that you remember that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. James 1:17. Any true vision from God will be a good and perfect gift and will never contradict His unchanging character or His written Word. God still speaks and still gives vision, as He promised It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17, but we are called to test all things and hold firmly to that which is good, and to weigh any vision or impression against Scripture, through prayer, and through godly counsel, because His Word is our sure foundation.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, and we thank You that You are the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning. We thank You that You desire to lead Your children and to give revelation so that we do not perish or cast off restraint. Lord, we ask in Jesus name that You pour out Your Spirit upon our dear one who seeks You, and grant clear, biblical, Holy Spirit breathed vision. Remove any selfish ambition or personal goals that would distract, and plant deep in their heart Your perfect will. Speak through Your Word, through prayer, and through Your gentle still voice, and give wisdom to discern what is truly from You. We pray for patience to wait for Your timing, for Your Word says For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and wont prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It wont delay. Habakkuk 2:3. Fulfill the vision You give, Lord, for Your glory and for their good, and let it bear fruit that honors Jesus. Keep them rooted in Your Word, obedient to Your law, and filled with hope knowing Your thoughts toward them are of peace and a future. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to continue to seek Him daily in Scripture, in humble prayer, and in fellowship, asking not only for a vision but for a deeper knowledge of the One who gives the vision. As you delight yourself in Him, He will make your steps clear and your path straight.

We appreciate you sharing this desire so honestly. Wanting God's direction more than your own plans is a good and humble place to be, and we are encouraged by your heart to follow Him.

What we have found helpful is to think of vision less as a single dramatic picture and more as a growing sense of God's calling that shapes how we live day by day. It is the difference between a fantasy we create to quickly solve things and a steady direction from God that forms as we walk with Him, listen, and obey in the small things. He is a God who loves to communicate and who made us for relationship with Him, so seeking His will is part of walking closely with Him over time.

A practice that often helps is to keep a regular, unhurried time to bring your own goals before the Lord and ask Him to align your desires with His purposes. It can also help to invite a trusted pastor or mature believer to pray with you and help you weigh what you are sensing, so you are not discerning alone. Testing what comes to mind against Scripture and wise counsel brings clarity and peace.

We are holding you in prayer before the Lord.

Father, thank You for this heart that wants Your way above its own. We ask You to draw our friend closer to You, give wisdom and quiet confidence as they seek You, and make Your leading clear step by step in Your timing. Help them to rest in Your faithfulness and to follow where You guide. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer for vision rather than merely following personal goals is itself an evidence of grace at work in your heart, for naturally we do not like being guided and would prefer our own course.

The vision spoken of in Proverbs is the revealing of the mind and will of God, His Word opened to the soul. Where that holy revelation is absent the people perish, but where it is present they are kept in the way of life. Give us but a word out of God's mouth and we can live upon it, but all the words out of man's mouth apart from divine inspiration are as unsatisfying as stones for bread. What you need, and what we ask the Lord to give you, is not a fleeting impression of your own spirit, but that clear sight of His counsel which comes through Scripture, through principles infused by His Spirit, and through humble acquiescence in His will.

Remember that the great purpose of God is infallible and moves surely on. You and I are as waves upon His sea, yet His divine sea of purpose still advances and He has never altered a single line of what He has purposed in wisdom and love. It is comforting to know that He who is the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, does not change like shifting shadows. Every good and perfect gift cometh down from Him, and He will fulfill what He reveals.

He has taught His people from their youth as a gracious schoolmaster, chastening but never casting out, giving object lessons by His providence and His Word until they learn to wonder at His wondrous works. So we pray that you may be kept as His pupil, observing His work in yourself and in others, and made also His pupil teacher, declaring what you have learned of His grace. Do not be hasty to run before His counsel, for haste is the author of much mischief. Be guided first by the general directions given in God's Word, avoid everything that is evil, and bow with submission to His will, and you shall find unerring guidance.

May you be guided by His counsel here and afterward received to glory, for on earth there is no true glory for any who take their own course, but there is sure glory for those whom He leads.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that You fulfill what You reveal. We thank You that every good gift cometh from the Father of lights. Grant to this dear soul not the vision of personal ambition, but the true vision which is Your revealed will in Christ Jesus. Open Your Word to their understanding by Your Spirit, implant Your holy principles within, teach them to wait upon Your counsel and to walk in obedience. Lead them by Your wisdom dressed in love and tenderness, keep them from following their own goals, and guide them with Your counsel until You receive them to glory. We ask this through the blood of Jesus Christ Your dear Son, who alone cleanses from all sin and by whom alone we are made beloved and accepted. In Jesus mighty and powerful name, amen.

It is encouraging that you want to follow God's direction rather than only your own personal goals, and that you are looking to His Word for guidance.

Proverbs 29:18 is often understood to mean mystical visions, but the vision spoken of there is God's revealed word and counsel. Where there is no revelation, no clear word from God, the people cast off restraint. The true vision we need is not a new private experience, but a clear sight of God's eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord, made known to us beforehand in the Scriptures. The prophets proclaimed that purpose, and Christ fulfilled it, so that we can give heed to what is written with confidence.

In the early days God gave sensible signs, like the sound of a mighty wind and visions of fiery tongues, not for the sake of those who already believed, but to point others to the Son of God. Now that Christ has come and His Word has been given, we have no need of such sensible visions, because faith suffices instead of all. Signs are not for those who believe, but for those who do not yet believe. What we have received through the apostles and prophets remains, and we receive its blessings by faith.

That does not mean God leaves you without guidance. Every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. He does not change, and He fulfills what He has promised. His will is to give you wisdom and clarity as you walk by faith, through His Word, through prayer, and through the sound counsel of His people, rather than through confusion or imagined phantoms that can trouble the eye of the understanding.

So let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are unchanging and faithful, and that You have made Your eternal purpose known in Christ. We ask in the name of Jesus that You would give this dear one a clear and healthy vision of Your will, not a pursuit of personal goals alone, but a heart that loves and obeys what You have already revealed in Scripture. Grant wisdom, humility, and discernment to understand Your Word, to recognize Your leading, and to walk in faith where sight is not given. Keep the mind clear from confusion and help each step to be ordered by You. Fulfill Your good purpose in this life for Your glory. In Jesus mighty name, amen.
