Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join with you in this desire to seek God's vision for your life rather than merely following your own personal goals, and we thank God for the hunger He has placed in your heart for His direction.

We love that you quoted Proverbs 29:18, and we want to share how it reads in full, Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. Proverbs 29:18. True vision is not just a personal plan or ambition, but divine revelation that comes from God and is always aligned with His Word. When we have His revelation, we walk in His restraint and blessing, not in our own understanding.

You also beautifully quoted James 1:17, Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow. We rejoice with you that our Father does not change like shifting shadows, and we know that any true vision from Him will be good and perfect and will come to pass in His appointed time. As it is written, Yahweh answered me, Write the vision, and make it plain on tablets, that he who runs may read it. For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay. Habakkuk 2:2-3.

We want to encourage you to seek vision God's way. He has promised, I will instruct you and teach you in the way which you shall go. I will counsel you with my eye on you. Psalm 32:8, and Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. God does still give visions and dreams as He wills, for it is written, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. Acts 2:17. Yet we are also called to test every impression, dream, and vision against Scripture, for Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1. Any vision that is truly from God will never contradict His Word and will point you to Jesus Christ and to holiness.

We pray together for you now.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You are the Father of lights and that You give wisdom generously to those who ask. We lift up our dear one before Your throne in Jesus' name and ask that You pour out Your Spirit upon them according to Your will. Grant them a clear revelation of Your purpose for their life, that they may not perish for lack of vision, nor cast off restraint, but walk in obedience to Your law. Father, if it is Your will, grant them visions and dreams that are from You, and give them deep discernment to know what is from You and what is from their own heart or the enemy. Align their desires with Your thoughts, for You have said, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11. Help them to wait on Your timing, to write down what You show them, and to walk by faith in Your unchanging Word. Lead them away from merely chasing personal goals, and draw them into Your perfect plan. We ask that You make their path straight as they acknowledge You in all their ways. We pray all of this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our only access to You and our only hope of salvation, amen.

Your longing for a vision from the Lord rather than the mere pursuit of your own personal goals is itself a token of Divine Grace at work within you, for naturally we do not like being guided, but the Grace of God dethrones obstinacy and gives us acquiescence in the Divine will.

We rejoice that you have fastened upon that word, Where there is no vision, the people perish. Understand by vision not a fleeting fancy of the mind, nor the invention of our own hearts, but the sure revelation which God has given. Give me but a Word out of God's mouth and I can live upon it. The true vision which keeps a people from perishing is that which comes down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and so is that heavenly sight by which we discern His purpose.

Be guided first by the general directions given in God's Word. There you have the infallible purpose of Him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will. His purpose is still moving on, like the great sea, though we are but waves upon its surface. He has never altered a single line of the Divine purpose, and while the creature is free, absolutely free, yet His counsel shall stand. When self goes, God comes in, and when human wisdom goes, then God's Wisdom appears. To stand at ease in the midst of tribulation and to know His will shows a veteran spirit, long experience, and much Divine Grace.

Therefore we do not pray that you should be led by mere dreams apart from Scripture, but that you should be made God's pupil, taught by Him from your youth, and made to observe His wondrous works. He teaches His children by His Word, by His providence, and by His Spirit, and He enables them to declare what they have learned.

Let us pray together for you.

Heavenly Father, we thank Thee that Thou dost not change like shifting shadows, and that Thou fulfillest the visions Thou givest. We ask in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Thy Son, that Thou wouldst grant to this Thy servant a clear sight of Thy will. Open his eyes to behold wondrous things out of Thy law. Deliver him from following his own designs, and guide him with Thy counsel. Let Thy Word be the vision by which he lives and walks, and grant him grace to bow with submission to that counsel, that afterward Thou mayest receive him to glory. Your longing to walk according to what God shows you rather than only your own personal goals is pleasing to Him, and I join you in prayer for that.

The word translated as vision in Proverbs 29:18 means prophetic revelation, the faithful word that God has spoken. Where that revelation is neglected, people cast off restraint and perish. Today we have that sure revelation in the Scriptures, and we are called to give heed to the things that are written, for there God has made known His eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord. That is the true vision that keeps our sight healthy. As the disordered eye mistakes what is before it, so a mind made turbid by confusion can mistake its own imaginings for divine leading. A healthy vision is a mind made clear and steady by the word of God.

This does not mean God cannot work in extraordinary ways, for at Pentecost there was a sound of a mighty wind and visions of fiery tongues, but those sensible signs were given for those present who needed to be convinced. For those who believe, faith sufficing instead of all, we receive the things once manifested and we walk by trust in what God has already revealed. Signs are not for those who believe, but for those who do not yet believe. Therefore the safest prayer is not only for a striking experience, but for clear spiritual sight to understand and follow what God has already said, and for wisdom to discern His will day by day.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that every good and perfect gift comes down from You, the Father of lights. We thank You that You have spoken and that Your word is a lamp to our feet. I ask for this brother or sister who desires Your leading, grant a true vision that is rooted in Your word. Guard from distorted and imaginary phantoms and give a healthy eye of understanding. Make clear the next steps according to Your eternal purpose in Christ, and give courage to turn from mere personal goals to follow Your will. Fill with wisdom, humility and faith to receive what You have already made known and to obey it. Fulfill in Your time and Your way what You have promised, for Your glory.
