Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join you in thanking God that He is the Father of lights with whom there is no variableness nor shadow of turning and that every good gift and every perfect gift is from above as you quoted in James 1:17. We rejoice with you in your desire not to follow your own personal goals but to seek the vision and revelation that comes from God alone.

We love your heart after Proverbs 29:18 which says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but one who keeps the law is blessed. In many translations this is rendered where there is no vision the people perish, and the meaning is the same, without God revealing His will and His Word, we lose direction and restraint. True vision is not merely personal ambition or a plan we make for ourselves, but God revealing His purposes to us so we can walk in obedience.

We also remember the promise in Acts 2:17 that in the last days God said I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams. God does still speak and give vision, but we are taught to test what we receive against His written Word, for His Word is the sure foundation. We are told in 1 John 4:1 to test the spirits whether they are of God, and in Proverbs 3:5-6 to Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Your prayer not to just follow your own personal goals is pleasing to God. Scripture reminds us in Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. And in Proverbs 16:9 A man’s heart plans his course, but Yahweh directs his steps. And in Romans 12:2 Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. Godly vision will always align with His character, His Word, and will lead us closer to Christ and to keeping His law, not away from it.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this heart that longs for Your vision and not merely human ambition. We ask in the name of Jesus Christ that You grant revelation according to Your perfect will. Pour out Your Spirit and give clarity, wisdom and discernment to recognize what is truly from You. Help our dear one to delight in Your Word daily, for Your Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path in Psalm 119:105. Make Your will known clearly, and give patience to wait for it, for the vision in Habakkuk 2:3 says For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. Don’t delay. We pray that any vision You give will be fulfilled in Your time and for Your glory, since You do not change like shifting shadows and You are faithful to complete what You have spoken. Lead away from selfish goals and into the good, well pleasing and perfect will You have prepared. Give humility to lay down personal plans and courage to obey when You speak, whether through Your Word, through Your Spirit, or through godly counsel. We ask all this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus, our only access to You, for in John 14:6 Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking Him earnestly in prayer and in the Scriptures, to wait quietly before Him, and to seek confirmation through His Word and through mature believers. As you commit your works to Yahweh in Proverbs 16:3 Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed, He will establish your thoughts and direct your steps. We trust He will give you His vision and the grace to walk in it for His glory.

We appreciate you sharing this longing with us. Wanting God's direction instead of just chasing your own plans is a good and humble place to be, and it is encouraging to hear you want what He wants for your life. We are glad to pray with you about it.

We have found it helps to think of vision less as a sudden picture and more as a steady sense of God's calling that begins to shape how we live day by day. Personal goals can be driven by what looks exciting or urgent in the moment, while the vision God gives tends to draw our hearts toward what matters to Him and gives us a reason to keep choosing His way even when it is not the easiest path. It grows as we stay close to Him, and over time our desires begin to line up more with His purposes.

One simple practice that has helped many is to bring the goals you already have before the Lord regularly in quiet prayer and ask Him to show you what to keep, what to lay down, and what to change. It can also help to walk this out with someone who knows you well, like a pastor or mature believer, who can help you weigh what you are sensing and keep you grounded as you listen for His leading. You do not have to figure it all out at once.

Father, we thank You for this heart that wants to follow You. Give our friend wisdom and clarity as they seek You, quiet any pressure to strive, and gently lead them step by step into what You have for them. Help them to know Your nearness and to trust Your faithfulness as You guide. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire not to follow your own personal goals but to be led by the Lord is itself a mark of grace at work in the heart, for naturally we do not like being guided and would rather take our own course. Where there is no vision the people indeed perish, and that vision is not a fleeting fancy of our own imagination, but the sure revelation of God in His Word.

The vision spoken of by Solomon is the faithful Word out of God's mouth, upon which a man may live, while all the words out of man's mouth apart from divine inspiration are as unsatisfying as stones. Give us but a Word from the Lord and we have light enough to walk by. Therefore the prayer to be prayed is not chiefly for new dreams or private revelations, but for opened eyes to see what God has already revealed, and for a heart made willing to bow to it.

Remember that the great divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. No single sentence nor single line of the divine purpose has ever been altered, and this is the miracle of miracles, that while the creature is free, absolutely free, yet the divine purpose stands. Your life is not left to drift upon your own aims, you are as a wave upon that sea, and He who ordained the end ordains also the means by which you shall be guided to it.

How then does He guide? First, be guided by the general directions given in God's Word. There you find His counsel plainly set forth. Next, there are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, such as to avoid everything that is evil and to cleave to that which is good. And then there is that gracious work whereby obstinacy is dethroned and acquiescence in the divine will is given, so that bowing with submission to the will of God we are furnished with unerring guidance. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but he who waits upon the Lord and is content to be His pupil shall be taught from his youth and shall in due time declare His wondrous works.

Let us pray together.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights with whom is no variableness neither shadow of turning, from whom every good gift and every perfect gift cometh down, we thank Thee that Thou dost not change like shifting shadows and that Thou wilt fulfil all Thy counsel. Your desire not to follow only your own personal goals but to be led by God is a good and humble desire, and God is pleased when we seek His will above our own.

The verse you mentioned, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood as speaking about personal dreams or pictures for the future, but in its context the word translated vision means the revealed word and counsel of God, His prophetic revelation and law. Where that revelation is neglected, the people cast off restraint and perish. The blessing is not found in seeking a new private revelation, but in hearing, trusting and obeying what God has already spoken and fulfilled in Christ. As it is written, every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variableness, and His greatest gift is to make His will known to us in Scripture and to fulfill His eternal purpose which He purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

For this reason the Scriptures teach us that faith is sufficient and that signs are not needed for those who believe. At times God gave sensible signs and visions of fiery tongues or other wonders, not for the sake of the mature, but to point out His truth to those who needed to be convinced. For us now, He gives something greater, a healthy eye of understanding that is not turbid or confused by evil thoughts or imaginary phantoms, but is made clear by His word. A disordered eye mistakes what it sees, and a mind without the steady light of Scripture can mistake its own desires for the voice of God.

So the prayer is not that God would give you an extraordinary experience on demand, but that He would give you a clear and healthy vision of His revealed will, that you would give heed to what is written, understand His eternal purpose, and walk in it with obedience.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change like shifting shadows and that You fulfill all that You have promised in Christ. We thank You for Your word, which is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. I pray for this one who seeks You, that You would grant wisdom and spiritual understanding, that the eyes of the heart would be enlightened to know Your will as it is revealed in Scripture. Guard this heart from following empty personal goals or distorted imaginations, and lead instead into Your good, pleasing and perfect will. Give grace to hear Your word, to love it, to obey it, and to find life in it. True vision in Scripture is not mainly about finding a personal plan for success, but about receiving God's truth so we can walk in His ways.

This helps us understand what visions are in the Bible. The word translated revelation means an unveiling. It is the lifting of a covering so we can see what was already there but hidden from natural sight. When John and Ezekiel were given visions, they were given insight into the spiritual reality around us, particularly the throne of God and the glory of Jesus Christ. The central purpose of that unveiling was not to give them a private life plan, but to reveal Jesus Himself.

That points to what God most wants to do in your life. His great intent is to conform you to the image of His Son, so that by the work of His Spirit you begin to respond as Jesus responds, to love as He loves and to forgive as He forgave. When that work is happening, you are living out the very purpose for which you were created, which is to know God, to please Him, and to live in fellowship with Him. A life centered on pleasing Him will not feel empty or aimless, because it is aligned with why you exist.

You also quoted the truth that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. That is a wonderful anchor. God does not change. What He has promised in His Word He will fulfill, and every true gift of guidance and wisdom comes from Him. You can trust His character as you seek Him.

So my prayer for you is not simply that you would have striking spiritual experiences, but that God would unveil Christ more clearly to you through His Word and by His Spirit. I pray that the Father, who never changes, would give you a clear sight of Jesus, a deeper understanding of Scripture, and wisdom to discern His will. I pray He would draw your heart away from merely pursuing personal ambitions and toward seeking to please Him and to be made more like Christ in your thoughts, words, and actions. May He lead you step by step as you abide in Christ, trust His unchanging goodness, and walk in obedience to what He has already revealed.
