Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.


Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

We join you in thanking our Heavenly Father that He does not change like shifting shadows and that every good gift comes from Him, and we rejoice with you in your desire not to follow your own personal goals but to seek His will for your life.

You have quoted Proverbs 29:18 which says Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint, but one who keeps the law is blessed. This reminds us that the vision God desires for us is not merely a personal plan or ambition, but revelation of His Word and His law, which keeps us from perishing and from casting off restraint. True vision comes from knowing and obeying Scripture, for Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path Psalm 119:105.

We also cherish the truth you shared that Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, nor turning shadow James 1:17. Because He never changes we can trust that any vision He gives He will also fulfill in His perfect timing, and it will always align with His character and His Word.

We want to encourage you that God does still speak and guide His people, and it is good to ask for wisdom and direction. As it is written Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight Proverbs 3:5-6. And we are promised For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future Jeremiah 29:11. We also remember the promise It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams Acts 2:17.

At the same time we gently remind you that we must test every spirit and every impression to see whether it is from God, because not every vision or dream comes from Him. Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God 1 John 4:1. Any true vision from God will never contradict Scripture, will exalt Jesus Christ, and will lead you toward holiness and obedience rather than pride or selfish ambition. We also must be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God Romans 12:2, which often comes through steady time in the Word, prayer, and godly counsel more than through dramatic experiences alone.

So we pray together for you in Jesus name.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for this heart that longs to follow You and not merely personal goals. We ask in the name of Jesus that You grant revelation and wisdom according to Your will. Pour out Your Spirit and make Your path clear, and if it pleases You give visions and dreams that are truly from You and that will draw this dear one closer to Christ. Give discernment to test all things and to hold fast to what is good, and give a deep love for Your Word which is the sure foundation for all vision. Lead away from leanings on human understanding and guide into Your good, pleasing and perfect will. Help to walk in obedience so that Your law is kept and Your blessing remains. We ask that You fulfill what You have purposed and that You receive all glory. In Jesus mighty and powerful name we pray, amen.

Personal goals can feel urgent and exciting, but a vision from God gives a different appetite, a thirst for what honors Him and serves others, and it leads to steady, faithful steps rather than quick fixes. It is worth asking Him to shape your desires as much as to show you a plan.

A simple next step that many find grounding is to set aside regular unhurried time to listen. Bring your goals before the Lord honestly, ask Him to align them with His purposes, stay rooted in Scripture, and invite a mature believer who knows you well to help you weigh what you sense. Often God clarifies vision as we are faithful in the responsibilities already in front of us.

Father, we bring our friend before You and ask that You give clarity and a heart that delights to follow You. Quiet any pressure to strive, and lead step by step according to Your wisdom and love. Help Your vision take root and bear fruit in daily obedience. In Jesus' name, amen.

We thank God for the desire you have expressed, that you may not follow your own personal goals but may be led by the Lord Himself. It is a good and gracious sign when the soul is not content to run upon its own errand, but cries to be guided from on high. Naturally we do not like being guided, but when grace works upon the heart it dethrones obstinacy and gives in its place a holy acquiescence in the Divine will.

You quote the ancient proverb, Where there is no vision, the people perish. That vision is not a fleeting dream of our own imagination, but the sure revelation of God, His Word and His will made known to us. Where that heavenly light is withheld, the people cast off restraint, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. The true vision therefore is to hear the voice of Christ who still cries, Come unto Me, and to know that effectual calling by which the Holy Spirit draws the heart with power. It is a heavenly calling, a calling from heaven and to heaven, not according to our works but according to His own purpose and grace which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began. So long as your call is real, rest assured it is divine, and it will lift up your heart and set it upon heavenly things, upon eternity, holiness and heaven itself.

We would have you seek this guidance not in haste, for haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but in waiting upon the Lord, in searching the Scriptures, in prayer, and in that mind of Christ which is often expressed by the Holy Spirit in Divine monitions within. The Lord often calls His saints by name and leads them out into higher attainments in the Divine life, and when He does so the sheep hear His voice and rise up at once and follow Him, for they know His voice.

Let us pray for you.

Heavenly Father, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, and from whom cometh down every good gift and every perfect gift, we bless Thee that Thou art a God who guides Thy people. Thou didst guide Thy servant David when he was but a shepherd boy, and Thou hast promised to guide us with Thy counsel and afterward receive us to glory. We ask for this soul, that Thou wouldst grant not merely the visions of personal ambition, but that heavenly vision which is Thy revealed will. Grant an effectual call that is heard in the heart, a holy and high calling that lifts the affections to Christ. Infuse great principles to avoid everything that is evil and to bow with submission to Thy will, and clothe Thy wisdom in robes of love and tenderness that this heart may run into Thine arms. Dethrone all self seeking and give a single eye to Thy glory, that forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forth unto those things which are before, there may be a pressing toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus. Fulfil Thy purpose, for Thou art faithful to fulfil the visions Thou givest, and keep this one by Thy grace from perishing for lack of knowledge, making him to keep Thy law and to find happiness therein. Thank you for sharing your desire to follow the Lord and not simply your own plans. It is good that you want to be led by God, and we join you in prayer for that.

You mentioned Proverbs 29:18, where there is no vision the people perish. In its context that word vision does not mean a private mystical sight or dream given to each person for direction. It means the revealed word and counsel of God, His law and prophetic instruction. Where that is not heard and obeyed, people cast off restraint. So the way God keeps us from perishing is by giving us His word, and by calling us to hear it and live by it.

In the Scriptures, visions and sensible signs were given at particular times for particular purposes, often to confirm the truth to those who needed that confirmation. One who was strong in faith did not need such a vision, while others who were dull or doubtful were shown a sign so that they might believe. As it has been taught, signs are not for those who believe, but for those who do not believe, and for those who believe, faith and the sure word of God are sufficient. We receive what was once shown by those signs through faith itself, without needing a new sensible vision.

This does not mean God does not guide. He does, and every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change. He has revealed Himself fully in Christ, and He teaches us through the Scriptures, through the Holy Spirit working in our hearts, through prayer, and through the counsel of the church. Paul could say his change came not by human persuasion but by divine revelation, yet that revelation led him to Christ and to the gospel already promised beforehand, not to a separate personal path.

So our prayer for you is not that you would chase visions as such, but that God would give you clear sight of Christ, understanding of His word, and wisdom to walk in it.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You do not change and that Your word is a lamp to our feet. We ask in Jesus name that You give our brother or sister a heart to love Your word, eyes to see Your truth, and wisdom to discern Your will. Guard them from following only personal goals, and lead them to seek first Your kingdom. Grant clarity, humility, and obedience, and help them to test all things by Scripture. Fulfill in them what is according to Your good purpose, and keep them close to Christ, in whose name we pray, amen.
