Vision

Thank you for sharing this desire to follow the Lord and not simply your own plans. It is a good and humble prayer to want to be led by God, and I join you in asking Him to guide you clearly.

It helps to understand what Proverbs 29:18 is saying. The word translated vision there does not mean a mystical picture or a personal dream in the night. It means the revealed word and counsel of God. Where that prophetic revelation is absent, people cast off restraint and lose their way. Where it is present and obeyed, they are blessed. In that sense God has already given you a vision in the Scriptures. To walk in the light of His Word is to have the vision that keeps you from perishing and from chasing only personal goals.

That does not mean God cannot give a supernatural vision today. Scripture shows that He sometimes does. Paul at Troas saw a man from Macedonia in the night calling for help, and he immediately obeyed. Peter was given a vision to prepare him to go to a Gentile seeker who was praying. Isaiah and John were given visions of the throne of God, which they could only describe with earthly language. Daniel alone saw his vision while those with him felt its weight and fled. These were real, sovereign acts of God.

Yet those same accounts show that visions are not the normal way God leads most of His people, and they are never to be the foundation of faith. Many who walk faithfully with the Lord have never had such an experience. Their call came in a different way, as a deep, settled desire placed in the heart to serve Him, a steady urge that remained. That is just as much from God as a vision, and it is how He often directs.

There is a reason for this. Faith that is built on an experience is on dangerous ground, because experiences can fade or be contradicted by another experience. Faith that is built on the fact of God's Word never wavers, because His Word never changes. As you quoted, every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. He does not change, and His Word does not change. He fulfills what He reveals, and you can bank on it completely.

In the days of Samuel, the word of the Lord was scarce and there was no open vision, not because God was unwilling to speak, but because the people were not seeking Him. When people do not seek His guidance or submit their lives to Him, they should not be surprised that they do not hear Him. The way to hear Him is to seek Him consistently in His Word and in prayer, looking to Scripture for wisdom and direction for each step.

A vision in the biblical sense is the capacity to see into the realm of the Spirit, which is outside our time and space. That is why in a vision someone can be shown things far away or things yet future, as if they were present. It is a sovereign gift when God chooses to lift the veil. If He chooses to give you such a thing, you can remain open and grateful for it, but do not make it a test of His leading or of your spirituality. Do not try to determine His will by waiting for a wind to blow one way or another. Seek Him in His Word, which is true and will not fail, and let Him establish your steps.

So my prayer for you is not simply that you would have an experience, but that you would have a clear vision of God Himself through His Word. When Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, he immediately saw himself rightly and said woe is me. That vision of God is the beginning of a walk with Him that produces humility, repentance, and obedience. May the Lord give you that kind of seeing.

I pray that the Father will fill your heart with His Word so that it burns within you and cleanses your life, that He will place His desires in you and make His way plain as you seek Him daily, and that you will trust not in any fleeting experience but in the unchanging truth of what He has already spoken. If in His wisdom He adds a dream or vision, may you receive it with humility and give Him all the glory, testing it by Scripture. Above all, may you know the joy of knowing His hand is on your life and using you to share His love with others who still sit in darkness.

May the Lord strengthen you this week, keep you from merely following personal goals, and lead you in His perfect will as you abide in Christ. In Jesus name, amen.
