Vision

Beloved of All
Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

Heavenly Father, we thank you that you do not change like shifting shadows. You fulfil the visions you give us. Hallelujah!

It is written „Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
In Jesus' mighty and powerful name, amen.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we stand with you in seeking God’s vision for your life rather than relying solely on your own plans. The scripture you referenced in Proverbs 29:18 is a powerful reminder that without God’s revelation, we can easily wander into confusion or destruction. "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law, happy is he." This verse underscores the importance of aligning our lives with God’s Word and His will, not just our own ambitions.

The Lord does indeed speak through visions, dreams, and His Word, but we must approach this desire with humility and discernment. Visions from God are not given to satisfy curiosity or personal ambition but to fulfill His purposes. We are reminded in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." God’s vision for you is always for your good and His glory.

However, we must also guard our hearts against deception. In the last days, false visions and dreams will abound, as warned in Jeremiah 14:14: "Yahweh said to me, ‘The prophets prophesy lies in my name. I didn’t send them. I didn’t command them. I didn’t speak to them. They prophesy to you a lying vision, divination, and a thing of nothing, and the deceit of their own heart.’" This is why it is crucial to test every vision or dream against Scripture and seek wise counsel from mature believers. God’s Word is the ultimate standard by which all revelation must be measured.

We also encourage you to cultivate a lifestyle of intimacy with God. Visions and dreams often flow from a heart that is surrendered to Him. Spend time in prayer, fasting, and meditating on His Word. As you draw near to Him, He will draw near to you (James 4:8). Remember, too, that God speaks in many ways, not just through visions. He may guide you through His Word, the counsel of godly mentors, circumstances, or the still, small voice of the Holy Spirit.

Let us pray together for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our brother/sister who is seeking Your vision for their life. Lord, You are the God who speaks, and we ask that You would open their spiritual eyes and ears to receive Your guidance. Give them clarity and discernment to recognize Your voice and to reject anything that does not align with Your Word. We pray that You would reveal Your perfect will for their life, not just for their own desires but for Your kingdom purposes.

Father, we ask that You would guard their heart against deception and pride. Help them to walk in humility, always submitting their plans to You. Teach them to delight in Your Word and to meditate on it day and night, so that they may be like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season (Psalm 1:2-3). Lord, we pray that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth (John 16:13).

We rebuke any spirit of confusion or fear that would seek to hinder their ability to hear from You. We declare that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, will guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). Father, we trust that You are working all things together for their good, as they love You and are called according to Your purpose (Romans 8:28).

We thank You, Lord, that You are faithful to complete the good work You have begun in them (Philippians 1:6). May they walk in the fullness of Your vision for their life, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking God with all your heart. Remember that His timing is perfect, and His plans for you are good. As you wait on Him, trust that He will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5-6). Keep your heart open to His leading, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9). May the Lord bless you and keep you as you seek His face.

Thank you for sharing this desire so honestly. Wanting the Lord's direction instead of simply following your own goals reflects a humble heart, and we are grateful to pray with you for clear guidance.

We have found that vision from God is often less about a single dramatic picture and more about a growing sense of His calling that shapes daily choices. It steadies us and gives us an appetite for what pleases Him, rather than a quick or magical answer. As you wait on Him, that kind of vision tends to grow through steady walking with Him.

A practical step that may help is to keep a regular unhurried time to bring your plans before the Lord and listen, and to share what you are sensing with a trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray and discern with you over time. Bringing what you sense back to Scripture and to counsel helps keep it grounded.

Father, we thank You for this heart that wants to follow You. Grant wisdom and quiet confidence as You lead step by step, and help our friend to recognize Your way and walk in it with peace. Give clarity where there is uncertainty and patience in the waiting. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire to seek a vision from God rather than to follow your own personal goals is itself an evidence of grace working in your heart, for naturally we do not like being guided and would rather choose our own way.

The text you have quoted, Where there is no vision, the people perish, does not speak of mere dreams of our own making or of ambitious plans dressed in religious language. The vision there is the revealed Word of the Lord, the prophetic light by which a people is kept from wandering. Where that light is withheld, the people cast off restraint, but he that keepeth the law, happy is he. True vision therefore is not found in haste or in self esteem, which is that speck in the eye which most effectually mars human vision, but in waiting upon God with a pure heart.

My soul, seek earnestly the Divine Grace to stand still in obedience to your Lord's behest. That is among the first lessons of guidance, to wait awhile. What the Christian does with cool deliberation, when he has waited upon God, when like David he has said, Bring here the ephod, he does with purpose, and God is with him. Haste is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life, but the grace of God dethrones obstinacy and gives us in its place acquiescence in the Divine will, and by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.

How then does God give vision to His people now. Not apart from His Word, but through it. There are great principles infused in every man who takes God for his guide, and the first is to avoid everything that is evil and to be attentive to that mind of Christ which is often expressed by the Holy Spirit in Divine monitions in our minds, so that the Law of the Book may be with us, and the Law of the Spirit within us. At the mouth of the furnace the Great Purifier sits as a Refiner to purify the sons of Levi, and when this work has been achieved and they have become pure in heart, the Divine purpose is accomplished, for the pure in heart shall see the Lord. Self is removed that Christ may be seen.

Remember also that the Divine Presence is the one hope of the people of God. We need the Divine Presence, and we are now bid to pause awhile and to seek it prayerfully, that in its matchless power we may go forward successfully. When that Presence comes, difficulties dissolve as glaciers dissolve in the summer sun. And be comforted that the great Divine sea of His purpose is still moving on. You and I are only waves of it, but no single sentence nor line of the Divine purpose has ever been altered. He will fulfil the visions He gives, for every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.

Here we walk by faith and not by sight. Dim enough is the vision here, but there is a more glorious vision laid up for us. We shall see Him as He is, when faith gives place to sight. Until then, pray for that sight which comes by faith, a clear view of Christ in His Word, and strength to follow where He leads.

Let us pray together.

O Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning, we thank Thee that Thou dost not change like shifting shadows and that Thou fulfillest every purpose of Thy love. Give to this Thy servant not the vision of self will, but that true vision which is Thy revealed Word. Take away the speck of self esteem, purify the heart, and grant a clear eye to see Thy will. Teach waiting rather than haste, and submission rather than obstinacy. Let Thy law be before the eyes and Thy Spirit within the heart, that every step may be ordered by Thee. Let Thy Divine Presence go with Thy child and dissolve every difficulty, and guide by counsel until afterward Thou shalt receive into glory. Keep from merely following personal goals, and fix the heart upon Christ, in whose light alone we see light. We ask this in the mighty and powerful name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is Himself our wisdom and our way. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

We are grateful for your desire to follow the Lord's leading rather than only your own personal goals, and we join you in prayer for wisdom and clarity.

The verse you mentioned, Proverbs 29:18, is often understood to mean personal pictures or mystical experiences, but in its context the word vision refers to God's revealed word and prophetic instruction. Where there is no word from God, no revelation of His will through His law and His prophets, the people wander without restraint. In that sense God has already given us His vision in Scripture, and it remains our sure guide because He does not change like shifting shadows.

Scripture also teaches that God does not give open visions to everyone as a regular pattern of guidance. Visions and sensible signs were given for particular reasons and at particular times, often to confirm the doubtful, to awaken the dull, or to reveal secrets of the heart that only God could know, as with Joseph after his suspicion or with the shepherds. For those who already believe, faith is sufficient instead of all such signs. At our baptism the Spirit comes upon us, though we see no dove with our eyes, and we receive what was once manifested by signs through faith itself. Even the apostle Paul, who was counted worthy of great revelations, spoke of them sparingly and showed that they were given by God's grace for His purposes, not sought on demand.

This does not mean God cannot reveal Himself as He wills, but it does mean we should not measure His nearness by whether we see a vision. The more needful vision is the healthy eye of the understanding, a mind kept clear and not confused by our own desires, so that we can recognize His will in His word.

So we pray not that you would chase after experiences, but that God would give you that true spiritual sight.

Heavenly Father, Father of lights from whom every good and perfect gift comes, we thank You that You do not change and that Your word stands firm. We ask in the name of Jesus that You would give our brother clear sight through Your Scriptures, that You would enlighten the eyes of his understanding, and that You would teach him to discern Your will and to walk in it rather than following only his own plans. Lead him by Your Spirit, through Your word, through prayer, and through wise counsel in the church, and give him peace to trust You even without a sensible vision. Fulfill in him what You have purposed according to Your unchanging goodness. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire not to simply follow your own personal goals but to be led by what God shows you is a good and humble prayer, and it reflects the heart of Proverbs 29:18. That verse is not speaking about personal ambition or dreams for the future, but about the prophetic word and revelation of God. Where that revelation is absent, people wander without restraint. Where it is present, it keeps and guides them.

The word that is often translated revelation in Scripture means an unveiling. It is a lifting of the covering to show what was there but could not be seen before. The book of Revelation itself begins by telling us it is the unveiling of Jesus Christ, not a sealed or hidden book. It was given to John through an angel, and for the most part it came by way of visions. A vision in this biblical sense is insight into the spiritual reality that surrounds us, a reality our natural eyes cannot see on their own.

We see this same kind of vision in the prophets. Ezekiel was given a vision of the throne of God and the living creatures around it. Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, with His glory filling the temple. John saw the glorified Christ. In each case the center of the vision was not the person who received it, but the Lord Himself, His holiness, His throne, and His purposes.

That is why your prayer is important to shape in a Christ centered way. To ask for vision is not to ask for something to make your own plans succeed, but to ask that the Spirit would unveil Christ more clearly to you, so that His will becomes your direction. As you noted from James, every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow. He does not change, and He fulfills what He reveals.

I pray for you that the Father would give you that kind of unveiling. May He open your eyes to see Jesus more clearly, to understand His word more deeply, and to discern His will for your life. May He give you wisdom to walk not according to your own goals, but according to His purpose for which you were created, which is to know Him and to bring pleasure to Him, and in that to find true fulfillment. May He keep you in His word, which is the sure revelation He has already given, and by His Spirit make it alive to you day by day, so you are led by Him and not by uncertain ideas.

Heavenly Father, thank You that You are unchanging and that You give good gifts to Your children. I ask in the name of Jesus that You would give this dear one a clear unveiling of Christ, insight that comes by Your Spirit, and a steady understanding of Your will through Scripture. Turn their heart more fully toward Jesus, guide their steps, and fulfill Your purpose in their life for Your glory. Amen.
