Vision

Your desire to follow God's leading instead of only your own personal goals is good and right before the Lord, and we are glad to pray with you for this.

The word translated vision in Proverbs 29:18 does not mean only mystical dreams or personal pictures, but God's revealed word and counsel. Where that revelation is neglected, people cast off restraint and wander. Where it is heard and obeyed, there is life and order. So the truest vision to seek is clear sight of what God has already shown us in Scripture, and grace to walk in it.

Scripture warns that spiritual sight must be healthy. As a disordered eye mistakes what is before it, so a mind made clouded by confusion can mistake its own imaginings for God's voice. We need a vision that remains healthy and free from distorted phantoms, and that comes when the heart is kept clear through repentance, prayer, and steady remembrance of God. When we carry Him always in our thoughts, we are helped both to choose what is good and to carry it through to the end.

History shows this. When God granted true sight to faithful men and women, the fruit was not pride or novelty, but a life shaped more fully by the laws of Christ, marked by self denial, holiness, and love for His word. The vision that God honors always draws us toward Christ and His kingdom and away from self.

So we will pray for you in Jesus name, through whom alone we have access to the Father and salvation, that God would give you that healthy, clear sight. We ask that He would deepen your remembrance of Him day by day, open your understanding as you read His word, guard you from confusion, and make His will plain so you can follow it with confidence and obedience. May He teach you to test every impression by Scripture, to seek counsel in the church, and to walk in faithful obedience one step at a time.

Continue to seek Him in prayer, in the Scriptures, and in a life of repentance and service to others. God delights to lead those who wait on Him and desire His way above their own.

Your heart to seek God's direction instead of simply following your own plans is good, and God honors that desire.

The verse you mentioned is often misunderstood. In Proverbs 29:18 the word translated vision does not mean personal goals or dreams for the future, and it does not mean mystical experiences. In the original language it means prophetic revelation, the revealed word of God. Where there is no word from God, people cast off restraint and lose their way. The need is not for a new personal vision, but for hearing and obeying what God has already revealed.

Scripture shows what true vision is. The book of Revelation is not a sealed or hidden book as many assume. The very name means an unveiling, a taking away of the covering. It is the revelation of Jesus Christ which God gave to make known to His servants what must take place. It was made known by an angel to John, and at times the angel and even the Lord Himself spoke to him directly. Most of what John received came by vision, which is insight into the spiritual world that surrounds us but cannot be seen with natural eyes. God in His grace pulled back the curtain so that John could see the reality of Christ in His glory and the certainty of His purposes.

That points to what God's vision for your life truly is. His great intent is not to give you a private roadmap of success, but to conform you to the image of Christ by the work of His Spirit. As that work is completed, you begin to respond as He responds, to love as He loves and to forgive as He forgave. That vision is found not by chasing new revelations, but by looking steadily at Jesus Christ as He is unveiled in Scripture.

So pray not primarily for unusual experiences, but that your eyes would be opened to see Christ more clearly in His Word, and that His Word would guide every decision. As you keep His Word and walk with Him, He will keep you from being driven by your own goals and will shape your desires to match His will.

I pray for you now that the Father would give you wisdom and understanding through His Word, that He would deepen your knowledge of Jesus Christ and make His will clear to you, and that by His Spirit He would continue to form Christ's character in you, so that you walk in obedience and in the peace that comes from following Him. In Jesus name, amen.
