Proverbs 29:18 says "Where there is no vision, the people perish:..." Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we join you in seeking God’s vision for your life. The verse you referenced in Proverbs 29:18 indeed reminds us, "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law is happy." This truth underscores the importance of aligning our lives with God’s purposes rather than our own ambitions. Without His vision, we risk wandering in confusion or pursuing paths that lead away from His will.

First, let us address the foundation of your request. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father (John 14:6), and it is by His Spirit that we receive revelation (1 Corinthians 2:10-12). If you have not already, we encourage you to examine your heart and ensure you have surrendered your life fully to Christ, for it is in Him alone that we find salvation and the guidance we seek. Romans 10:9-10 tells us, "that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation."

Now, let us pray together for God’s vision to be made clear in your life:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, acknowledging that You alone are the source of true vision and purpose. Lord, we ask that You would open the eyes of [this dear one’s] heart to see what You have prepared for them. Remove any distractions, fears, or self-centered ambitions that may cloud their understanding of Your will. Father, speak clearly through Your Word, through prayer, and through the counsel of godly believers. Give them dreams, visions, and a deep conviction of the path You have set before them. Help them to walk in obedience and trust, knowing that Your plans are for their good and Your glory. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may discern Your voice above all others. We rebuke any spirit of confusion or deception that would seek to lead them astray, and we declare that Your perfect will shall be done in their life. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen."

We also want to encourage you to seek God’s vision through His Word, for it is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path (Psalm 119:105). Spend time in prayer and meditation on Scripture, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His truths to you. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." God’s vision often unfolds as we faithfully walk in obedience to what He has already revealed.

Additionally, surround yourself with godly mentors and fellow believers who can speak into your life and confirm the visions God is giving you. Proverbs 15:22 tells us, "Where there is no counsel, plans fail; but in a multitude of counselors they are established." Do not isolate yourself in this journey, seek the wisdom of those who are mature in their faith and can help you discern God’s voice.

If you find yourself struggling with impatience or frustration as you wait for God’s vision, remember that His timing is perfect. Habakkuk 2:3 assures us, "For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay." Trust that God is at work even when you cannot see it, and remain faithful in the small things He has already called you to do.

Lastly, we want to gently remind you that God’s vision for your life will always align with His character and His Word. If a "vision" ever leads you away from holiness, righteousness, or the truth of Scripture, it is not from God. Test every spirit and every revelation against the Word of God (1 John 4:1), and hold fast to what is true.

May the Lord bless you with clarity, peace, and unwavering faith as you seek His vision for your life. We stand with you in this pursuit, believing that God will fulfill His purposes in you.

It is clear that you are not content merely drifting along with your own plans, you genuinely want to see what God is doing and align your steps with His purpose. That longing itself is a gift, and we are glad to stand with you in it.

We have found that seeking God‑given vision is often less about dramatic, sudden revelations and more about a daily willingness to bring our hopes and ambitions into His presence, asking Him to sift and shape them. One practice that helps many of us is setting aside a short, unhurried daily time of quiet: we open our hands before the Lord, tell Him we do not want to run after empty goals, and then simply wait, letting a psalm or a passage from the Gospels settle in our minds. Over time, we begin to recognize His gentle nudges more clearly, and our personal goals often start to bend toward something larger than ourselves.

As you continue to pray for vision, we encourage you not to despise the small, ordinary ways He may first guide you. Faithfulness in the next right thing often clears our eyes for the longer view. Keep listening, and trust that the One who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it.

The prayer for vision is a cry for deliverance from the tyranny of personal goals, for the natural heart ever spins its own web and calls it the design of Heaven. Beware, then, of setting up an independent business for thyself, framing thine own purposes and then seeking a divine seal upon them. Where there is no true prophetic vision, the people cast off restraint; but the vision that saves is not the mere seeing of a path for thy feet, but the sight of the King in His beauty. The very sunlight of Divine revelation, favor and fellowship, could readily prove too much for our feeble vision, heart, and brain.

Thus the vision that must swallow up all lesser sights is the vision of the Lamb of God which taketh away the sins of the world. He is the first and chief object of attraction, and when the Spirit takes of the things of Christ and shows them unto thee, thou hast a treasure which no man taketh from thee. The revelation in time is nothing more than a transcript of what God resolved to do from before the foundation of the world. It is not for thee to ascend into heaven to fetch a vision down, as if the counsel of eternity were incomplete. The promise of God is His eternal purpose, written out in black and white for thee to read. Thou dost not need a voice beyond the Book; thou needest the Holy Spirit to unveil the Book itself.

If thou wouldst not follow thine own personal goals, beware of the fear of man, for it bringeth a snare. The man who trembleth at the face of men will soon wander from his place like a bird from her nest, chasing visions born of cowardice and human approval. Our business is to stand fast to the Truth of Revelation and let philosophies die as the frogs of Egypt died. Trust in God, by giving us God's strength and consequently courage and decision, lifts us up above the fear of man and above the feverish plotting of our own ambitions. The soul seeks spiritual food; get that from the honeycomb of the Word, and the sweetness of it will make plain the path.

Let the vision thou cravest be this: to know God in Christ Jesus, fully enjoyed. That is Heaven below. Cease from the clamor for special visions and drink from eternal springs. If ever thou gettest hold of a Truth by the teaching of the Holy Spirit, thou wilt never give it up. The evil that God hates will be cast out, and thy capacity enlarged for full fruition of Himself. He is thy stronghold; hide thyself behind Him. Thou needest not a new revelation to keep thee from perishing; thou needest living faith in the old Revelation, which is the Mercy Seat where God meets with His people. The glory of God is to reveal Himself to those whom He prepares to receive the Revelation; meet Him there, beneath the blood-sprinkled cover, and all thy wanderings will end. Thy vision is the Lamb, and where He is, the way is sure.

The vision of which the Scripture speaks, that the people perish without, is not a private spectacle of the mind's eye but the clear proclamation of God's revealed will. You ask for visions; I ask you, are you not surrounded by the vision that already delivers from perishing? The Law and the Prophets, the Gospels and the Apostolic teaching, these are no dim lamp but a blazing pillar of fire, and whoever orders his life by this rule has a vision that saves. Why seek a sign when faith alone suffices? For signs are not for those who believe, but for those who believe not.

Consider the example of the Apostle. When Paul received his revelation on the Damascus road, it was not because he hungered for a mystical experience; he was a blasphemer breathing murder, and the vision arrested his madness. It was a divine condescension to break a heart hardened by self-righteousness. And what did he himself teach? That he was taught of Christ immediately, yet he did not command believers to chase after similar ecstasies. Instead, he set his gospel before them as the sufficient rule. For the mind made turbid by wandering phantoms confuses the very object of faith, creating a disease of the inward eye more perilous than bodily blindness. The soul that perpetually demands a sensible token often slides from the very pit of obedience while it gazes after signs.

Do not suppose that the service of God is nourished chiefly by flashes of heavenly sight. You recall that even the glorious revelation given to Paul was matched by a thorn in the flesh, lest he be exalted overmuch. He who was caught up into paradise possessed a soul so steeled that he could bear such a vision without pride; yet even for him, the surpassing greatness of the revelations was balanced by a humbling messenger of Satan. Are you ready for the furnace that refines such a gift? For the man given to luxury and idle ease, even a true vision becomes a snare leading to iniquity. What you call a vision may be nothing but the phantom of your own goals dressed in a shining garment, for the heart is deceitful above all things.

The true vision, the one that keeps a man from perishing, has already come. "Thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes." The revelation is Christ crucified, the power and wisdom of God. At your baptism, no fiery tongue may rest upon your head, no dove may descend in sensible form, those manifestations were for the sake of the dull and the clamorous multitude. Yet upon you, no less, the Spirit came, not through sight, but through the promise of the faithful God. The inward illumination of the Spirit, given through the washing of regeneration, opens the eye of the understanding to see the Lord’s beauty in the ordinances He has appointed. Why do you seek the shadow when the substance stands before you in the holy Scriptures, in the holy Table, in the fellowship of the saints?

Your duty is not to hunt after a novelty in the air, but to make your calling and election sure. Let your prayer be rather that God would unveil the pride lurking in your spirit, so that the gospel may remain your only star. The knowledge that saves is knowing that you are a babe, wholly dependent on revelation already given, not on some private disclosure yet to come. If you would not follow your own personal goals, then take up the cross. For what is more greatly marvelous and replete with amazement, and more fully proclaims His divine power, than that after a Cross and Tomb, the word of the Crucified has gone forth to every land and sea? Fix your vision there, upon the Lord strong and mighty in battle, who has led captivity captive. That is the sight which ensures your steps do not slide, and that, beloved, is vision enough for any saint to reach the harbor.

The hunger in Proverbs 29:18 is good, but it needs to be aimed in the right direction. A true vision from God is not merely a divine endorsement of your personal goals. It is an unveiling of Jesus Christ. The opening of Revelation says the revelation, the apocalypse, is the lifting of the wraps around him. The visions John received did not make him more confident in his own plans; they put him in the Spirit before the throne and before the glorified Christ. When Isaiah saw the Lord high and lifted up, his first response was not purpose but repentance: woe is me, for I am undone.

So I will pray for you in Jesus' name, and I will pray for the right kind of vision. I will ask that God gives you insight into the things of the Spirit, that he makes Christ larger to you, and that your own goals come under his pleasure. You were created for his pleasure and for a living relationship with him. That is the purpose that restrains and reorders everything else. If a vision makes you more ambitious for yourself, it is not from him. If it makes you lower before the throne, more aware of your need, and more faithful to the Lamb, it is moving in the right direction.

Let the written word measure every impression. Ask the Lord to open your eyes to see his glory, to search your heart, and to align your desires with his will. I pray that you do not cast off restraint by following a private map, but that you walk in the light of his revelation. The Lord bless thee and keep thee.
