Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction and understand the deep longing to walk in God’s perfect will rather than relying on your own understanding. The scripture you referenced in Proverbs 29:18 (WEB) indeed reminds us, "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law is blessed." This verse underscores the importance of seeking God’s revelation and aligning our lives with His Word. Without His guidance, we risk wandering in confusion or chasing after things that do not satisfy or honor Him.

First, we must address the foundation of your request. It is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father, and it is by His Spirit that we receive visions, dreams, or any form of divine communication. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6 (WEB), "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me." If you have not already done so, we encourage you to surrender your life fully to Jesus, repenting of any sin and asking Him to be the Lord of your heart. Salvation is the starting point for a life lived in communion with God, and it is through this relationship that He speaks to His children.

Now, let us pray together for you, seeking God’s will and His revelation in your life:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can approach Your throne. Lord, we lift up this dear one who is seeking Your vision and Your direction. We ask that You would open their spiritual eyes and ears to receive Your guidance, whether through Your Word, the still small voice of Your Spirit, or even dreams and visions as You see fit. Father, we know that Your plans for them are good, plans to prosper them and not to harm them, plans to give them hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11 WEB).

Lord, we pray that You would purify their heart and mind, removing any distractions or idols that might hinder their ability to hear from You. Help them to delight in Your law and meditate on it day and night, so that they may be like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season (Psalm 1:2-3 WEB). Father, we ask that You would give them a hunger and thirst for righteousness, that they may be filled (Matthew 5:6 WEB).

We also pray that You would protect them from deception, Lord. Your Word warns us that in the last days, false prophets and false visions will arise (Matthew 24:24 WEB). We ask that You would grant them discernment, that they may test every spirit and hold fast to what is good (1 John 4:1 WEB). Let them not be led astray by their own desires or the lies of the enemy, but let them walk in the truth of Your Word.

Father, we rebuke any spirit of confusion, fear, or doubt that may be trying to cloud their mind. We declare that the God of peace will guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7 WEB). We ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, who leads us into all truth (John 16:13 WEB). Let them walk in step with Your Spirit, bearing the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23 WEB).

Lord, we also pray for their personal goals and desires. If there are any areas where their ambitions do not align with Your will, we ask that You would uproot those things and replace them with Your perfect plan. Help them to seek first Your kingdom and Your righteousness, trusting that all these things will be added to them (Matthew 6:33 WEB). Let them not lean on their own understanding, but in all their ways acknowledge You, so that You may direct their paths (Proverbs 3:5-6 WEB).

Finally, Father, we ask that You would surround them with godly counsel and fellowship. Let them be encouraged by others who are also seeking Your face, so that they may grow in faith and wisdom together. May they be a light in this world, pointing others to You through their words and actions.

We thank You, Lord, for hearing our prayer. We trust in Your faithfulness and Your perfect timing. May this one walk in the fullness of Your vision for their life, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking the Lord with all your heart. Spend time in His Word daily, for it is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path (Psalm 119:105 WEB). Be still before Him, for in quietness and trust is your strength (Isaiah 30:15 WEB). Remember that God often speaks in a whisper, so cultivate a heart that is sensitive to His voice. Surround yourself with believers who can pray with you and offer godly wisdom, and be open to the ways God may choose to reveal His will to you.

If you have not already, consider fasting as a way to draw closer to God and seek His face. Jesus Himself fasted and prayed, setting an example for us to follow (Matthew 4:2 WEB). Fasting helps to crucify the flesh and sharpen our spiritual sensitivity, making us more attuned to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

Lastly, be patient and trust in God’s timing. His ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9 WEB). He knows the plans He has for you, and He will reveal them in His perfect time. Until then, walk in faith, knowing that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6 WEB).

We love that you're asking this, it's a sign of a heart that genuinely wants to follow God rather than its own map. That longing to receive vision from Him, not just chase personal goals, is something we've felt too. It can be so easy to fill our lives with good things that still miss what He actually has for us.

One thing we've found helpful is setting aside unhurried time not to ask for things, but simply to be with Him. That might mean sitting quietly with a psalm, telling Him you're listening, and then staying present. When we think of vision, it's rarely a sudden download. More often it's a slow shaping of our desires over time as we abide in Christ, the Spirit gently bringing our heart into alignment with His. Pay attention to the people and needs He keeps bringing to mind; sometimes that's how vision starts.

Another practical piece: invite a few trusted, mature believers to pray with you about this. Others can often spot the gifts and burdens God has woven into us when we're too close to see ourselves. Their confirmation can help us discern whether an impulse is from the Lord or just our own enthusiasm.

We're praying with you now. Father, thank you for this dear friend who wants their life to be guided by your vision, not just their own plans. Quiet their heart and give them eyes to see what you're doing. By your Spirit, stir the dreams you've placed deep within them, and give them wisdom to know the difference between that quiet leading and their own ambitions. You speak of visions, yet the vision that Proverbs extols is not such as you imagine. That text points to the prophetic word, the unveiling of God’s mind through His servants, without which a people cast off restraint. We have now the completed Scripture, a more sure word of prophecy, whereunto you do well to take heed as a light shining in a dark place. Are you asking for fresh revelations when the sacred canon is sealed? Beware, for many who sought such things have been led into delusion, mistaking the fancies of their own hearts for the voice of God.

Yet I understand the thirst beneath your request, you dread the emptiness of following your own petty aims. That holy dread is good. But let it drive you not to chase signs, but to yield entire surrender to the divine will. Fear God so deeply that you dare not impute to Him one hard thought; then in that very fear a strong confidence will spring up. If your way is hid, and the path dark, remember that the whole of your life was written in His purpose from the beginning. He has not altered a single line. You desire guidance? Then let the gentlest motion of His Spirit, the still small whisper through the Word, be enough. Half a word from Him should find you ready to obey. Are you submissive to His appointments as to your rank, your health, your abilities? He who will not yield to the divine will is often in trouble of his own making.

Cry rather, “O that my ways were directed to keep Your statutes!” The commandments are the lamp, the law is the light, and in keeping them there is great reward. You need no other vision than a broken heart healed by Calvary’s blood, a life washed from sin, and a daily walk in that old path. Look at Christ, in His wounds read God’s hatred of sin; in His death read God’s love to sinners. This is the vision that saves. Have you beheld it? Then go forth as His witness, declaring His wondrous works, not seeking some new spectacle for yourself.

The divine purpose moves on like the sea; you are but a wave. Be content to break upon the shore at His bidding. Ask, “Am I God’s witness?” rather than “Am I a seer?” The Spirit who plucked you like a brand from the fire will teach you from your youth, through trials and mercies, until you stand complete as one of His jewels. He will never require you to do evil, and He will not leave you to starve while you walk uprightly. Trust Him, submit to Him, and then you will not perish for lack of vision, you will have the light of life.

You desire visions from God, and this longing is not without merit; it springs from a wholesome fear of following mere human designs. But consider carefully what the Scripture means when it says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." This vision is not primarily a private apparition or ecstatic trance, but the clear proclamation of God's will, the prophecy and teaching that guide a people in righteousness. In former times, God spoke through visions and dreams to the shepherds, to Zacharias, to the Virgin, because the fullness of revelation had not yet dawned. But now, in these last days, He has spoken to us by His Son, and the vision we most urgently need is the eye of faith fixed upon Christ and His commandments.

Why do you seek a sensible vision when faith alone suffices? For signs are not for those who believe, but for the unbelieving. The very fact that you desire to follow God rather than your own goals shows that the Spirit is already stirring within you. The faithful Joseph received no vision in his perplexity; he was full of faith and needed only a quiet word of guidance. The apostles on Pentecost beheld fiery tongues, yet those signs were not for their own sakes but for the Jews who stood by. After the Spirit had once descended, the Church relied not on fresh wonders but on the once-delivered truth. To ask for a vision is often to betray a weakness of faith, as if the commands of Scripture and the inner witness of conscience were not enough.

Consider the apostle Paul. His conversion was sudden, violent, attended by a heavenly light and the voice of Christ Himself. Yet this was not something he sought; it was thrust upon him in his madness as a persecutor. And though he was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable words, he does not urge us to pursue such experiences. Instead, he glories in his infirmities, lest he be exalted overmuch by the abundance of revelations. Even that great vessel of election, who was taught directly by the Lord, counts all visions as nothing compared to the knowledge of Christ crucified. Do you imagine that your path requires a blaze of light when the Sun of Righteousness already shines upon you in the Gospel?

What then is the vision that keeps you from perishing? It is the healthy eye of the understanding, purified from the confusion of evil thoughts and distorted phantoms. The mind made turbid by passions mistakes what it sees; it runs after private revelations and in so doing often slides into the very pit of iniquity, like Solomon when he lingered in luxury. The vision you need is to behold the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ through the Scriptures, to have the eyes of your heart enlightened to know the hope of His calling. This is no novel system but was foreordained from the foundation of the world.

Do not therefore pray for ecstasies and trances. Instead, pray that God would open your mind to understand the Scriptures, that you might see wondrous things out of His law. Pray for a spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, which He bestows not through blazing signs but through the quiet meditation of His word and the godly counsel of the Church. Imitate Peter, who when challenged did not boast of his vision directly but rehearsed the divine work with humility, proving that his steps were ordered by God. So too make your life a light, so that even without any supernatural appearance, others may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. This is the vision that builds up the soul and leads you not into perilous imaginings but into the safe haven of God’s eternal purpose.

The longing you are expressing is not about chasing a random mystical experience. True vision, the kind that prevents a soul from perishing, is always the unveiling of Jesus Christ. We live surrounded by a spiritual reality we cannot perceive with our natural eyes, but the Spirit of God lifts the veil. The purpose of that vision is singular: to see Him as He truly is. When He becomes the central focus, every personal ambition falls into its proper place, either ordered by His hand or quietly set aside.

Human nature drifts toward its own goals, building little kingdoms that ultimately crumble. You were created for God’s pleasure. Until your life is anchored in that foundational truth, fulfillment will remain out of reach. The world promises significance but delivers a hollow shell. Vision from God cuts through the noise. It refocuses the heart away from self-preservation and onto the living throne. When you see the Lamb who is worthy, blessing and honor belong to Him, the drive to simply chase a personal agenda loses its appeal because you are finally aligned with the reason you exist.

Pray boldly, then, that the eyes of your heart would be opened to the revelation of Jesus. Do not fear that asking for this will lead to a passive life; it will ignite a fire that energizes faithful works. A vision of His holiness purifies motives like a refining flame. As you seek His face, He will replace a lukewarm, self-directed spirit with clear, decisive purpose. The door to that deeper clarity is open before you now.
