The cry of your heart is not for a phantom conjured from restless ambition, but for that holy constraint which binds a soul to the unerring purpose of God. I am glad of this, for where no vision of the Divine purpose breaks in upon the soul, the people do indeed cast off restraint and perish in their own wanderings.
Yet mark this well: it is written that the whole of your history was graven upon His heart from the beginning. You are not a wave that washes up upon the shore of chance, retiring without progress. The great sea of His purpose is moving on; not a single line of that divine scheme has ever been altered, nor shall it be. It is a wonder beyond all wonders that creatures, absolutely free, serve that purpose still. The vision you must seek is not a novelty whispered in the silence of a disordered imagination, but the old, eternal counsel revealed in the Word. Be very slow to desire a revelation through some slight aperture in a cracked brain, for there is a generation who pay no sort of attention to the solid Scripture while they chase after such phantoms.
If you would see God’s work, you must become His pupil. As He taught David through many struggles, educating his faith by object lessons in the dark, so He will teach you. Perhaps the vision will come to you as you are seated in the furnace, with the Great Purifier sitting as a Refiner, consuming your self-will until the dross of your own personal goals is skimmed away. When human wisdom goes, then God’s wisdom appears. To see the salvation of God, you must often be brought to a dead standstill, powerless and paralyzed, until you see that the east wind and the waters of the sea obey His behests, and that the whole end to which we drive is that our salvation is in Him.
There is no clearer witness of God’s purpose for you than the bleeding Son of God. Look to the hands and feet of Jesus. Read there the Divine hatred for sin, a hatred so terrible that He spared not His own Son. And read there the Divine love which, without violating His holiness, sent that Son to be the propitiation for our sins. This is the vision that saves from perishing: a sight of God in Christ, reconciling the world unto Himself. Sinner though you are, if you come beneath the Cross and trustingly look up to God’s dear Son, you shall be saved! That beholding is the dawn of all true guidance.
Wherefore, do not seek to exalt yourself by building a tower of private revelations, for no man can transmute the common stone of his own heart into a jewel fit for Christ’s crown; that is God’s work, and God’s work alone. Cast yourself upon the sweet and irresistible compulsions of Divine Grace. The eternal counsel shall guide you, and the finis of it is sure: “You shall guide me with Your counsel, and afterward receive me to Glory.” Stand still, then, in a believing, submissive spirit, and you shall see what God’s vision will make of your life, not by the sidelong glance of ecstatic frenzy, but by a steady look at the Lord Jesus Christ.
