Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine direction, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s vision for your life. Proverbs 29:18 indeed warns us, "Where there is no vision, the people perish; but he who keeps the law is happy." This verse reminds us that without God’s guidance, we risk wandering in our own strength, but when we align ourselves with His Word and His will, we find true joy and purpose.

First, let us address the foundation of your request. You rightly seek visions in Jesus’ name, and this is crucial. Jesus Himself said in John 14:6, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." It is only through Him that we have access to the Father, and it is only by His name that we can approach God in prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to surrender your life fully to Christ, confessing Him as Lord and Savior, for it is through this relationship that the Holy Spirit speaks to us and reveals God’s will.

Now, let us pray together for your request:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the only name by which we can be saved and through which we have access to You. Lord, we lift up our brother/sister who is seeking Your vision for their life. Father, Your Word says in Jeremiah 29:11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." We ask that You would reveal Your plans and purposes to them in ways that are unmistakably from You.

Lord, we pray that You would open their spiritual eyes and ears to receive visions, dreams, and promptings from Your Holy Spirit. Give them the discernment to recognize Your voice, as Jesus promised in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." May they not be led astray by their own desires or the distractions of this world, but may they be sensitive to Your leading.

Father, we also ask that You would purify their heart and mind, aligning their will with Yours. Help them to seek You first in all things, as Matthew 6:33 instructs, "But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well." Remove any pride, self-reliance, or fear that may hinder them from fully surrendering to Your vision.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of confusion or doubt that may try to cloud their mind. We declare that Your plans for them are good, and we stand on Your promise in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."

We thank You, Father, for Your faithfulness and for the assurance that You will guide them. May they walk in the fullness of Your vision for their life, bringing glory to Your name. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

Now, let us encourage you with some practical steps to seek God’s vision for your life. First, immerse yourself in Scripture, for it is through God’s Word that He speaks to us. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path." Spend time daily in prayer and meditation on the Bible, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal His truth to you.

Second, surround yourself with godly counsel. Proverbs 11:14 tells us, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Seek out mature believers who can speak into your life and help you discern God’s will.

Third, be patient and trust in God’s timing. Habakkuk 2:3 reminds us, "For the vision is yet for the appointed time, and it hurries toward the end, and won’t prove false. Though it takes time, wait for it; because it will surely come. It won’t delay." Do not rush ahead of God, but wait on Him with expectation.

Lastly, be obedient to what God has already revealed to you. Sometimes we pray for direction but ignore the clear instructions God has already given us in His Word. James 1:22 admonishes us, "But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves." As you obey what you already know, God will reveal more of His will to you.

We believe that as you seek God with all your heart, He will not withhold His vision from you. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith, and trust that He will lead you into all truth.

We share that hunger to live for something bigger than our own plans. It’s easy to drift into a life that looks productive but feels hollow because the driving force is just our own ambition. You’re right to stop and ask God to set the direction. In our experience, God’s vision for a person often comes less like a sudden, dramatic download and more like a steady alignment of the heart. It grows as we bring our ordinary desires to him in prayer, let Scripture reshape our thinking, and pay attention to the kind of needs that move us with compassion, things we can’t not care about. That stirring often holds clues to his calling.

A simple next step might be to carve out unhurried time this week simply to sit with God and name your willingness. Tell him you’re laying down your own agenda for a few minutes and asking him to plant whatever desire or burden he wants in you. Don’t feel pressured to walk away with a neat answer. Sometimes he gives clarity in the moment; other times he quietly reorders our instincts over the weeks and months as we keep showing up. The key is to stay close to the Guide, not just hunt for the map.

Lord, thank you that you see the full picture of this life you’ve given, and you know exactly where we belong in your story. Give our friend a growing sense of your purpose, not just a list of tasks but a deep, shaping direction that feels like home. Quiet every competing voice so your still, small whisper becomes unmistakable. We trust you to lead, and we do so in Jesus’ name. Amen.

You have quoted Proverbs, and you desire visions from God, lest you perish in following your own goals. This is a lawful desire, if by vision you mean that revelation of God’s will which He has given in His Word. The vision that preserves the soul is not some private dream or inward fancy, but the sight of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, as set before you in the Gospel. If you would not be led by your own imaginings, then fix your eyes upon the written Word; for God’s Word is the fire that burns out our dross and the hammer that breaks our stubborn wills. It is there that the Spirit works to change the human will, making men willing in the day of God’s power.

Guard yourself against the notion that you must receive some new revelation apart from Scripture. Many have shipwrecked their faith by chasing after visions, when they should have been humbling themselves under the mighty hand of God’s sovereignty. Salvation is of the Lord’s will, not of man’s striving after signs. He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy; and the surest proof that His mercy has found you is not a vision, but a heart made submissive to His commands. You do well to pray in Jesus’ name, for all blessing comes through that name. But let your prayer be more after this fashion: “Lord, grant me grace to know Thy will as Thou hast revealed it in the Scriptures, and to yield obedience to it, whether Thou dost grant me any extraordinary sight or not. Let me not perish by leaning on my own understanding, but in all my ways acknowledge Thee, and Thou shalt direct my paths.”

There is a vision which you may behold without any danger of self-deception: look to Jesus Christ upon the cross. See there the glory of God in the hiding of sin, the mercy that blots out transgression. If you have beheld that with the eye of faith, you have seen enough to guide you home. And if you would have further light for your daily walk, then continue in prayer, but pray with resignation, after your Savior’s model in the garden: “Nevertheless not as I will, but as Thou wilt.” God’s will is the axle of the universe; let it be the axle of your life. He will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; He will guide you with His eye. Therefore, keep your eye upon Him, and be swift to obey. That is the vision that keeps the soul from perishing.

The prayer you offer is not misplaced, for without the divine vision, indeed the people cast off restraint and perish. Yet take care that you understand what this vision is. You ask for visions from God, but often what we seek under that name is merely a sign for our own desires, a private revelation to confirm the path we have already chosen. The holy prophet does not speak of personal ecstasies or secret glimpses granted apart from the common faith, but of the prophetic word, the clear guidance of God’s law and the hope set before all His elect. The vision that keeps a people from perishing is the revelation of God’s will already given, and above all, the vision of the age to come.

Do you wish a vision? Then look to the cross and the empty tomb. That is the vision which orders all things. God has not left us to wander after our own goals, for we have the inspired Scriptures, the body of the Church, and the teaching that has been handed down. If you would not follow your own personal aims, then do not seek a private sign, but submit your mind to the common vision of the faith once delivered. The remembrance of God is that vision. For the prophet says, “I will remember Thee from the land of Jordan, and from the little hill of Hermon.” Even when surrounded by confusion or exile, the soul that keeps God in its thoughts has a vision that guides. And to remember Him truly is to keep His commandments and to see His hand in every affliction, knowing that tribulation here is the schooling for rest there.

Consider what I have often said: the present life is a contest, a war. In war, one does not seek comfort or the satisfaction of every longing, but only how to overcome the foe. This one thing is our study: to attract the grace of God, to draw to ourselves that assistance. If you plead for a vision, let it be the vision of faith, which sees the invisible and counts the promises more solid than present things. That is the vision which prevents perishing, and it is granted to all who seek not their own but the things of Christ. Do not confound the times by demanding now what belongs to the world to come. There we shall see face to face; here we walk by the guiding light of the gospel.

So then, pray not for extraordinary revelations, but for the grace to hold fast what you have received. Beseech God to open the eyes of your heart to understand the hope of your calling, the riches of His inheritance in the saints. That is the vision that transforms, and it comes through the foolishness of preaching, through the partaking of the one bread which is the body of Christ, through the fellowship of His sufferings. If you ask for a vision, ask for a clearer sight of His love, a deeper trust in His election, and the strength to endure every trial as a way of escape provided by the Faithful One. When you give thanks in loss, you see glory; that is a vision no eye has beheld except the eye of faith.

Therefore make your prayer such as this: that you may never forget God, so that He may never forget you; that you may choose the good and accomplish it, not by your own impulse, but by the power of His grace. This is the vision that will keep your steps from perishing, for it is nothing else than to live by every word that proceeds from His mouth, and to set your mind on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

There is a spirit world surrounding us, and Scripture often uses visions to lift the veil and give insight into godly, eternal realities. Yet the key is found in the first words of the Revelation: it is the revelation of Jesus Christ. Any genuine vision from God will not ultimately be about our own plans or ambitions; it will center on Jesus, His glory, His throne, and His redemptive purposes. That book opens with the risen Lord among the lampstands, and the visions that follow show judgment, mercy, and the culmination of all things. Their purpose was to show God’s servants what must soon take place, aligning their lives with His sovereign will.

When you ask for visions so you do not just follow personal goals, you are asking for something good, but the greater gift is a clearer sight of who Jesus is. The veil of the temple was torn from top to bottom, signifying that every believer now has direct access to the throne of grace. You do not need an intermediary to obtain God’s direction. The Holy Spirit has been given as a guarantee, and He leads often by opening doors of opportunity and shutting others, by shaping our desires to match the character of God revealed in Christ. That is the vision that lets us walk in wisdom: seeing Jesus, the faithful and true witness, and understanding that in Him we know exactly what the Father is like.

I will pray for you, that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him. May the eyes of your understanding be enlightened, that you may know the hope of His calling and the riches of His inheritance in the saints. Let your goals be swallowed up in the grand vision of the throne, where the cherubim cry holy and the elders cast their crowns before Him who lives forever. That eternal perspective will guard you from merely following your own heart, and instead you will live as a faithful servant sealed with the living God, looking for the city whose builder and maker is God.
