Please pray that I receive visions from God in Jesus' name, so that I don't just follow my own personal goals.

We hear your heart’s cry for divine guidance, and we stand with you in seeking the Lord’s vision for your life. The scripture you referenced, Proverbs 29:18, reminds us that without revelation from God, people cast off restraint and lose their way. How beautiful it is that you desire to align your steps with His will rather than your own! This is a sign of humility and a longing to walk in obedience.

First, let us affirm that God does speak to His children, through His Word, through prayer, through godly counsel, and yes, even through visions and dreams when He chooses. The Lord said in Joel 2:28, "It will happen afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; and your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams. Your young men will see visions." And in Numbers 12:6, He declares, "Hear now my words. If there is a prophet among you, I, Yahweh, will make myself known to him in a vision. I will speak with him in a dream." So we know this is something God can and does do.

However, we must also caution against seeking visions above seeking the Giver of visions. Sometimes, in our eagerness for supernatural experiences, we can become distracted from the simplicity of abiding in Christ. Jesus said in John 15:4-5, "Remain in me, and I in you. As the branch can’t bear fruit by itself unless it remains in the vine, so neither can you, unless you remain in me. I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." The primary way God guides us is through His Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit as we walk in daily fellowship with Him. Visions, when they come, should confirm what God has already spoken in Scripture, not replace it.

We also want to gently remind you that visions from God are not given for personal curiosity or spiritual thrill-seeking. They are given for His purposes, often to edify the church, to warn, to direct, or to reveal His glory. If you are seeking visions primarily to avoid following your own goals, we must ask: Are you surrendering all of your goals to Him? Are you willing to obey what He has already revealed in His Word, even if it means laying down your own plans? Proverbs 3:5-6 says, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths." True guidance begins with a heart fully submitted to God’s will, not just a desire for supernatural experiences.

Let us also address a concern: If you are not already in the habit of reading, studying, and meditating on God’s Word daily, visions may not come, or worse, they may be misinterpreted. The enemy can disguise himself as an angel of light (2 Corinthians 11:14), and without the plumb line of Scripture, we can be led astray. We encourage you to saturate your mind with God’s Word so that when He speaks, you will recognize His voice. Jesus said in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me."

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Name above all names, the only Name by which we can approach Your throne. Lord, we lift up our brother/sister who is seeking Your vision and Your will. We thank You that You are a God who speaks, who guides, and who reveals Yourself to those who seek You with a pure heart.

Father, we ask that You would open their spiritual eyes and ears to perceive Your voice. Give them dreams and visions if it is Your will, but more than that, give them a heart that is fully surrendered to You. Help them to trust in You with all their heart and not lean on their own understanding. Direct their paths, Lord, and let their steps be ordered by Your Word.

We pray against any deception or distraction that would keep them from hearing You clearly. Guard their mind and heart, and let them recognize Your voice above all others. Help them to abide in Christ daily, to meditate on Your Word, and to walk in obedience to what You have already revealed.

Lord, if there is any area of their life that is not fully submitted to You, any goal, desire, or plan that is not aligned with Your will, we ask that You would reveal it and give them the grace to surrender it. Let them not seek visions for their own sake, but let them seek You alone, knowing that in You, they will find all the guidance they need.

We pray that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they would walk in wisdom and discernment, and that they would be a light to those around them. May their life bring glory to Your name, and may they always remember that apart from You, they can do nothing.

We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

In closing, we encourage you to continue seeking the Lord with all your heart. Spend time in His presence, worship Him in spirit and truth, and wait patiently for His leading. Remember, God’s timing is perfect, and His ways are higher than ours. If He chooses to speak to you through visions, it will be in His perfect time and for His perfect purpose. Until then, walk in obedience to what He has already shown you, and trust that He will guide your steps.

May the Lord bless you and keep you; may He make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; may He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace (Numbers 6:24-26).

A lot of us have found that God’s vision doesn’t usually come as a sudden, dramatic download. He often lets it grow slowly, right in the middle of ordinary faithfulness. So while you’re asking for visions, you might discover that what he really wants to give you first is a clearer heart, a will that’s calmer, more settled, and ready to notice what he’s already showing you. That’s just as much a gift.

One thing that can help right now is to root yourself in Scripture not just for principles, but for relationship. When you’re reading a Gospel, ask simply, “Jesus, what do you want me to see about you today? What in my life looks like this?” That small shift often opens our eyes to what God is already doing, and our own goals start to bend, sometimes quietly, toward something deeper.

We’ll pray with you, not that you’d be passive, but that you’d be led.

Lord Jesus, you know the desire behind this request. Cut through the noise and self-interest that cling to all of us. Give our friend a steady, unhurried hunger for your Word and a growing trust that you guide even when we can’t see it. Quiet the anxiety about missing your will, and replace it with the confidence that you shepherd those who ask. In your name, amen.

You have laid hold upon a text heavy with both warning and promise: where no vision is, the people cast off restraint and perish. And you are wise to fear walking after your own private goals, for self-will is a blind guide that leads to the ditch. The prayer you ask is one I will earnestly bring before the throne, but let me press this home upon your own heart: the vision you crave is not a thing severed from the submission of your whole being to God. The Lord does not cast pearls before swine, nor does He entrust heavenly sight to a soul still clutching the reins of its own ambition.

You will never clearly see His purposes while self is upon the throne. There must be an unconditional surrender, a yielding at discretion to the King whose hands and feet are scarred for you. When the Spirit impels you to a duty that costs you leisure or honor, and you obey, then the eyes of your understanding are opened. It is in bowing with submission to the divine will that we are furnished with unerring guidance. The two prayers must become one in your life: "Father, I will," yet "not as I will." If you learn to pray with holy boldness, you are the man who will also know how to resign everything to the Father's pleasure. Do what He will with you, and He will say, "Ask what you will, and I will give it to you."

Be not deceived into thinking that visions drop into a careless lap. Are you living in the neglect of a known part of God's will? Are you undesirous of knowing some portions of it, and therefore willfully blind? You cut the sinew of your own strength. The heavenly vision comes most often along the path of humble service. The more you do for souls with Christ, the purer and the more Christlike you will be, and the clearer will be your sight of Him. Work in the vineyard, and the Lord of the vineyard will meet you there and show you His face.

And remember, the presence of God dissolves difficulties. Do not think that the Master revealed Himself only in olden times. His promise is as good as ever. If you live near to Him, He will say things to you that He will not tell anyone else. Oh, plead with Him to rend the heavens and come down, to make the mountains flow down at His presence. He can save the most obstinate, bring opposers to His feet, and astonish you beyond measure with what He will yet do. That sacred nearness, that intimate commerce between the soul and its Maker, is the atmosphere in which true vision thrives.

I will pray, then, that you be emptied of self-conceit and filled with His Spirit; that you may be guided by His counsel now, and afterward received to glory. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The vision of His glory, the clear knowledge of His will, these He does not withhold from the upright. Cast your own goals at His feet, take up the yoke of absolute resignation, and your eyes shall see the King in His beauty, and the land that is very far off.

You ask to receive visions from God, so that you may not simply follow your own personal goals. This desire appears devout, yet consider carefully what you seek. For many, while pursuing visions, unknowingly seek to establish their own righteousness rather than submit to the righteousness of God. Did not the Lord Jesus give thanks that the mysteries of the kingdom were hidden from the wise and prudent, and revealed to babes? Observe then: it is not the striving after extraordinary revelations that obtains them, but the lowliness of a childlike soul.

Do you lack a vision to keep you from perishing? You have the sure prophetic word in the Holy Scriptures, and the gospel proclaimed by the apostles. The Son of God Himself, who is without beginning and without end, has appeared and taught us. Why then do you ask for new visions as though the revelation were incomplete? The blessed Paul received visions and revelations of the Lord, even being caught up to the third heaven, yet he spoke of these things only under constraint, and gloried rather in his infirmities, lest the abundance of the revelations should exalt him overmuch. If such a man feared pride, what shall we say, who so easily become puffed up by the smallest favor?

Your true goal must not be to see visions, but to obey the vision already given. You say you do not wish to follow your own goals; then crucify your own will and keep the commandments. The fire of the Holy Spirit, which appeared to Moses in the bush and to the prophets of old, now dwells in the hearts of the faithful. This fire purifies and illumines from within. Where there is no vision, the people perish, yes, but that vision is the knowledge of God in the face of Jesus Christ, preached by the Church. If you neglect this and seek private revelations, you wander from the path.

Consider also the pattern of the apostles: their life was woven together of gladness and despondency, revelations and afflictions. They did not demand visions; rather, as they humbly confessed Christ before men, the Spirit granted them power and wisdom. Paul was taught by direct revelation, not because he asked for it, but because it pleased God to reveal His Son in him while he was still a persecutor. How much more, then, should you wait upon God with fear and trembling, content with whatever He appoints?

If the Lord, in His mercy, should send you a dream or a glimpse for your encouragement, receive it with thanksgiving and test it by the faith once delivered. But do not seek such things. Rather, be a babe in humility, and the Spirit Himself will guide you into all truth. That is the vision which keeps the soul from perishing: to know Christ and the power of His resurrection, not in ecstasies, but in the daily dying to self and living unto righteousness.

Your desire for God-given vision is right at the heart of what the Spirit wants to do in you. When that proverb speaks of vision, it’s not about crafting your own roadmap and asking God to bless it. It’s about your eyes being opened to see what He is already doing and what He is unfolding, much of which is hidden to natural sight. A true vision is insight into the spiritual realm, an unveiling rather than a concealing. God does not seal off His purposes from a heart that is set on Him; He peels back the wrapping so you can perceive what He has prepared and walk in step with it.

The Spirit’s deepest work is to reshape your inner responses so that you love what He loves, forgive as you have been forgiven, and reflect Jesus more clearly. As that transformation goes forward, your personal goals will be reordered. You will find yourself wanting what He wants, because His desires take root in you. That is the kind of vision that keeps a person from merely drifting after private ambitions. It anchors you in what is eternal, and it often comes as you immerse yourself in Scripture, where the fire of His Word lights fresh clarity within.

Pray with confidence, then, but also with yielding. Ask Him to show you the things that are on His heart, the priorities of His coming kingdom that are meant to shape your days now. The prayer that seeks His kingdom first will not be ignored. Keep His word and do not fear the process by which He draws you away from self-directed plans. He is faithful to give vision that carries you beyond mere existence into a life that bears lasting fruit.
