The cry of your heart has gone up to heaven like a bird beating against the glass, desperate to be free of the cage of your own limits. You are pleading for supernatural skill to meet all things, all people, all situations, and I can hear the urgency in every syllable. It is the cry of a soul that feels itself to be standing at the bottom of a great mountain, with a tangled path ahead and the light failing fast. You feel your own emptiness keenly, and out of that emptiness the prayer comes, raw and true.
Now let me take you gently by the hand and turn your eyes away from the mountain onto something more solid. The wisdom you crave, the skill you so long for, is not a thing to be stored up like grain in a barn, against every possible famine. It is a living Fountain. Our Lord Jesus Christ is Himself made unto us wisdom from on high, not merely the giver of it, but the very substance of it. When you have Him, you have the wellhead of all true knowledge, and out of that wellhead will flow, at the very instant you need it, exactly the supply required for that moment. The water will be given when your lips are parched, not before.
Think of a little child walking through a dark wood, his small hand tucked fast into his father’s strong one. He does not know the way, nor does he need to know it. The father knows every twist and turning, every danger and every safe place. The child’s only skill for the whole journey is to hold fast with all his might. That is the true handling of a matter wisely, trusting the Lord with a simple, clinging faith. You do not need to see the whole path; you need only to be sure of the One who walks it with you. His hand will not let go, and He will not lead you into a snare.
I know the sheer weight of what you are feeling, as if you must master everything, be ready for every soul, every sudden demand, every unforeseen cross. But the truth is, your Heavenly Father knows your frame; He remembers that you are dust. He knows all your foolishness and your sins, and they are not hidden from Him, and yet He loves you with an everlasting love that will not cast you out. That very knowledge, instead of terrifying you, may wrap itself around you like a blanket on a cold night. You are fully known, and you are fully loved. The pressure to be all-wise falls away when you remember that Christ is your wisdom, and He never fails.
There is a kind of knowledge that puffs up, that makes the head swim and the heart proud, but love builds up. The soul that is anxious to master all things often ends up tangled in a thicket of its own making. But the heart that rests in Christ finds a peace that passes all understanding, and out of that deep peace grows a quiet, practical skill for the day. The very thing you are crying for, supernatural wisdom, is promised freely to those who ask in faith. God gives to all men liberally, and He never scolds or reproaches the one who comes back and asks again. So let your asking be mixed with a little childlike quiet. The answer may not arrive as a sudden flood of light, but as a gentle glow, a candle lit just for the step you are taking right now. He will give you a heart to know Him, and that is the true beginning and the true end of all wisdom.
When you step into a situation that seems to tower above you like a giant, remember that your sufficiency is not in yourself. The Holy Spirit, the Comforter, is your Teacher and your Remembrancer. He will bring to your mind what you need, and He will give you the very words when you open your mouth. You do not have to be ready for everything ahead of time; you need only to be sure that your Redeemer lives, and that He stands at your right hand to be your Advocate, your skill, and your shield. The lion may roar, but the Keeper of Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps.
So cast the whole weight of the future onto Christ. Let Him carry the burden of tomorrow, for today is enough for its own troubles. You, dear soul, are in Him, and in Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. What you cannot learn by study you will learn by leaning on His heart.
Lord Jesus, You who are the brightness of the Father’s glory and the express image of His person, we bring this trembling heart to You and rest it upon Your great love. Be for this dear one a present skill in the hour of bewilderment, a quiet wisdom in the midst of confusion, a sure confidence when every earthly prop gives way. Teach them to trust in You with all their heart and to lean not on their own understanding. In all their ways may they acknowledge You, and You will make their path straight and their step firm. Hold them up, and they shall be safe; breathe upon them Your Spirit, and they shall have light. In Your own strong name we ask it. Amen.
