Leah B.

Servant of All
Well, the dreaded carotid artery ultrasound is over, and, praise Jesus, my results were that I have only very mild, "age appropriate" plaque. I need to be monitored every year, but I don’t need any treatment whatsoever. You know what? When I heard the blood flowing to my brain while the lady was doing this test, I already knew I was okay. It sounded very strong. Anyway, I am very thankful to God. This being said, I think I need to make a point here: I was diagnosed with high cholesterol several years ago. I went on Lipitor reluctantly, and I take coenzyme Q10 every day to try to prevent possible side-effects. But here's the thing: You have a growing number of health influencers who are correctly pointing out statin [and other drug] side-effects, touting alternative medicine and so forth. All this is fine except sometimes these people are wrong, and sometimes they cause confusion and fear. My point? You need to ask questions of your health care providers. You need to think carefully about what you're doing. You need to PRAY. That's what I did when I decided to take the Lipitor as prescribed and override the nay sayers, and I am very glad that I did. I eat a healthy diet but not super restricted and gorking down fiber all the time. In other words, the Lipitor allows me to enjoy my food and my life. [NOT saying you can eat all garbage and processed foods and sugar; just saying you don't have to worry about every morsel that crosses your lips if you take a statin.] Lipitor keeps my cholesterol down, which in turn prevents plaque formation; and it also hardens and stabilizes existing plaque. Lipitor is the reason I am now happily planning my Christmas with my beautiful great niece and great nephew and the rest of my family instead of being in danger of a heart attack or a stroke. I am not telling anybody what to do here. I am only saying that I am very glad I made the decision to take a statin each day. I am saying I sat down and prayed about this decision, and I did what I thought God wanted me to do, same as when I decided many years ago that I absolutely needed to quit smoking. Please always ask God what to do when making important health decisions, people.

We rejoice with you in the good news of your test results and the peace that comes from knowing your health is being preserved! Your testimony is a powerful reminder of how the Lord sustains us, even through the tools of modern medicine, when we seek His wisdom. It is beautiful to hear how you heard the strength of your own blood flow and trusted the Lord’s provision in that moment. Truly, He knits our bodies together in intricate ways, and every beat of our hearts is known to Him (Psalm 139:13-14).

Your discernment in this matter is commendable. Scripture calls us to be wise stewards of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). You sought the Lord in prayer, weighed the counsel of medical professionals, and made a decision that honors Him by valuing the life He has given you. It is clear that you did not make this choice lightly, and your gratitude reflects a heart that trusts in God’s sovereignty over your health.

We must also address the broader issue you raised about the noise of conflicting health advice in our world today. The apostle Paul warns us in Colossians 2:8, "Be careful that you don’t let anyone rob you through his philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the elements of the world, and not after Christ." While it is wise to be informed and to ask questions, we must filter every piece of advice—whether from medical professionals, influencers, or well-meaning friends—through the lens of Scripture and prayer. The Lord promises to give wisdom to those who ask (James 1:5), and we can trust Him to guide us when we seek Him earnestly.

Your decision to take Lipitor, coupled with a balanced approach to diet and lifestyle, is a testimony to the freedom we have in Christ to make choices that honor Him without falling into legalism or fear. You rightly pointed out that we are not called to live in bondage to rigid rules about food or to the anxiety of every morsel that passes our lips. Jesus Himself said, "Don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’... But seek first God’s Kingdom, and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well" (Matthew 6:31, 33). Your approach reflects this trust in God’s provision and care.

We also celebrate with you the joy of planning Christmas with your family, especially your great niece and nephew. The Lord has indeed blessed you with more time to pour into the lives of those you love, and we pray that these moments will be filled with His presence and peace. Your story is a reminder to all of us that our days are numbered by the Lord (Psalm 139:16), and we are called to live each one for His glory.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for Your faithfulness in the life of Your child. We thank You for the good report of her health and for the way You have preserved her through the wisdom of medical care and her trust in You. Lord, we ask that You continue to guard her heart, her mind, and her body. Give her strength and vitality to enjoy the life You have given her, and fill her days with joy as she spends time with her family.

Father, we also lift up those who may be facing health decisions of their own. Grant them discernment to seek Your will above all else. Help them to filter the noise of the world through Your Word and to trust in Your guidance. May they not be swayed by fear or legalism but walk in the freedom and wisdom that comes from knowing You.

We pray for those who are struggling with anxiety over their health or who feel overwhelmed by conflicting advice. Remind them that You are their healer and their peace. Help them to cast their cares upon You, knowing that You care for them (1 Peter 5:7). Give them the courage to make decisions that honor You, whether in matters of medicine, diet, or lifestyle.

Lord, we thank You for the gift of modern medicine and for the skilled hands of those who care for our bodies. We ask that You bless the medical professionals who serve Your people, giving them wisdom and compassion in their work. May they see the value of each life they touch and honor You in their practice.

Finally, Father, we ask that You continue to draw Your child closer to You. May her testimony of Your faithfulness be a light to others, pointing them to Your love and provision. Fill her with Your peace as she walks forward in the days You have ordained for her, and may she always find her rest in You.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone gives us access to You and through whom we find healing, hope, and eternal life. Amen.
