Very Painful Toothache

Hi! I got a very painful toothache on Thursday night. On Friday, I felt it again. On Saturday (today), it’s a constant pain. Unlike Thursday and Friday, I can’t even chew properly today. I feel like there’s an infection huhu. But the dentist made an xray and said there’s nothing wrong. His secretary didn’t gave me a medcert for my hospital duty because she said they dont give medcert to those with normal findings. So, I really took a day off without the medcert due to the pain. I got marked absent in my duty. Oh, and a little background of my toothache… this tooth was filled on late December ###. It’s a deepset one. I only felt the pain starting thursday huhu. I am praying to God that this toothache stop and do not cause pain and do not disrupt my duties and classes. I am gonna have a duty tomorrow. I will push myself to work hard for this and defy the pain because I hate getting extension duties. I’ll be having a post test tomorrow too and I worry I about my performance. Please pray for me huhu. In Jesus name, amen.

We hear your pain and we join with you in bringing this toothache before the Lord, for He cares about every part of our suffering and He is our healer. We know how distressing it is to have constant pain that makes it hard to chew, to be told nothing is wrong on the x-ray, and then to be marked absent without a medical certificate while also carrying the burden of hospital duties and classes and a post test tomorrow.

We want to encourage you that God sees your diligence and your desire to be faithful in your duties even while in pain. He invites us to cast our cares on Him. As it is written in 1 Peter 5:7, casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. And in Philippians 4:6-7, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. We also cling to the promise in Psalm 103:2-3, Praise Yahweh, my soul, and don’t forget all his benefits, who forgives all your sins, who heals all your diseases. And in Jeremiah 30:17, But I will restore you to health, and I will heal you of your wounds, says Yahweh.

We understand your desire to push yourself to defy the pain so you do not get extension duties, and we admire your strong work ethic. Yet we also want to gently encourage you to steward the body God has given you. Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit as taught in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, and persistent, worsening pain after a deep filling, especially pain that was not there before and now prevents chewing, can be a sign of inflammation of the nerve or an infection that may not always show clearly on an early x-ray. We encourage you not to ignore this or simply endure it, but to seek a prompt second opinion, perhaps from another dentist or an endodontist, and if there is swelling, fever, or worsening pain, to seek medical care urgently. Continuing to document your symptoms, keeping the x-ray, and humbly explaining your situation to your clinical instructor or dean may also open a way for grace regarding the absence, as the Lord can give you favor with those in authority.

We also pray for your peace as you prepare for your post test, that even in pain God will give you clarity of mind and ability to recall what you have studied, for He is near to those who call on Him.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, thanking You that we can approach Your throne of grace through Him. We lift up our dear one to You who is suffering with this very painful toothache. Lord, You know the tooth that was filled in late December, You know the pain that began Thursday and has now become constant and prevents chewing. We ask for Your healing hand upon this tooth and the surrounding nerves and gums. If there is infection or inflammation, we pray You would reveal the cause to the dentists and bring complete healing, that the pain would subside and not disrupt duties and classes. Lord, we pray for wisdom for any dentist or doctor who examines this, that they would have discernment beyond the x-ray and provide the right treatment. We pray for relief tonight, for restful sleep before duty, and for strength and endurance for tomorrow's hospital duty. Remove the pain or give grace to bear it and to perform duties safely and well. We pray for favor regarding the absence that was marked, that instructors and hospital staff would show understanding and mercy. We pray for peace over the post test tomorrow, calm the anxiety and help with focus and memory, and let all be done for Your glory. We thank You that You are the God who heals and who sustains us in hardship, and we trust this need into Your loving hands. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

We have been thinking of you since we read your note. A constant toothache that keeps you from chewing, after days of pain getting worse, is exhausting, and we can understand why you are worried about infection and about your duties tomorrow. Being marked absent when you were truly in pain and then facing a post test while hurting adds a lot of pressure.

We are praying for relief for you and for peace as you prepare for your duty and exam. Since the pain has become constant and you are concerned about infection, we encourage you to seek care again promptly with a dentist or medical clinician before your duty tomorrow if you can, and let them know the pain has worsened and chewing is now difficult even though the earlier xray was clear. They are the best ones to assess what is happening and advise on next steps. If you have a supervisor or faculty coordinator, it may also help to let them know what you are experiencing and ask what documentation options they accept when a clinic does not issue a certificate for normal findings.

We know you want to push through and do well, and we admire your diligence. Please also give yourself room to get the care you need so you can serve and study without worsening the pain.

Father, in Jesus name we lift up our friend to You. You see this pain and the worry about duties and studies. Please bring comfort, guide the clinicians who will see them, and grant wisdom and rest in the days ahead. Amen.

Praying for you in the name of Jesus. May you find a dentist that will help you - in the meantime, trying rinsing with a solution of peroxide and water, or even just water, actively swishing it around your mouth to possibly dislodge any food particles that may be stuck. There is definitely an underlying source for your pain. From my experience, an X-ray doesn’t always show any problems. Praying for your healing and recovery.

Your painful affliction has been laid before the Lord and we have prayed for you in the name of Jesus Christ, our great Physician.

We are grieved to hear of this constant pain which has kept you from chewing and from rest, and which now threatens your duties and your studies. The Scriptures teach us that we very speedily care for bodily diseases, for they are too painful to let us slumber in silence, and they soon urge us to seek a physician for our healing. It is no small trial to be told that nothing appears on the image, while the pain itself is so present and so sharp, and then to bear the added burden of being marked absent without a certificate. The Lord sees this and knows the disappointment and the anxiety it has caused.

You speak of anxiety for tomorrow, for your hospital duty and for your post test, and of your desire to push through the pain. Hear the counsel of the Word, which reminds us that the very anxiety which arises through being in a difficulty unfits us to meet that difficulty. There is an indoor work to be done within the heart, as David says, Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless His holy name. Cast your care upon Him, for He cares for you, not only for your soul but for your body. Your duty is important, and you do well to be diligent in it, yet remember that the particular department of work which has been entrusted to us, though we ought to think well of it and to do it well, is not after all the hinge upon which the whole universe turns. The Lord can keep you and sustain you even in weakness.

We take comfort in the healing virtue that is in Christ. The Scripture says the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and we have learned that the least thing about Christ is healing. Not only His great work upon the cross to finish transgression and to bring in everlasting righteousness, but even the leaves, the little touches of His grace, are full of healing virtue. He is the Sun of Righteousness risen with healing in His wings, and when He healed the sick of the palsy He said, Son, be of good cheer, your sins are forgiven you, showing that pardon and healing are in happy conjunction in His hand. He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds, and He will at last perfectly heal our bodies.

So we pray for you now, that the Lord would touch this tooth and ease this pain, that if there be infection He would guide the dentist to see it and to treat it rightly, and that He would grant you wisdom to seek further care if the pain continues, for the Lord often works through the skill of physicians. We ask that He would give you rest tonight, relief from this constant ache, strength for your duty tomorrow, and clearness of mind for your post test. May He lift the anxiety from you and give you peace within, and may He turn this trial to your good, that you may taste more of His healing leaves.

We will continue to pray that the Lord will restore you to health and keep you in His grace, and that whether in pain or in ease you may find your healing and your pardon in Christ alone.

Father, look upon this suffering child in mercy, lay Thy healing hand upon this pain, give wisdom to those who provide care, and grant grace and strength for every duty set before her. Let her prove Thy sustaining power in weakness and Thy comfort in anxiety. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we ask it, Amen.
