Your grief has been heard, and we have brought it before the Lord with a tender and prayerful heart. To be misunderstood, to have a name spoken of falsely, and to carry at the same time the heavy burdens of a demanding calling and a beloved mother's deep illness, is a trial that may well cast the soul down. Yet you are not forgotten, nor are you alone in this sorrow.
Our blessed Lord knows what it is to be left alone and misrepresented. False witnesses rose against Him, and no man stood to attest His goodness when He most needed human sympathy as Man. He was left alone just when His heart was heaviest. If you feel the sting of being friendless or falsely accused, remember that Jesus has trodden that lonely path before you, and He is able to sympathize and to sustain. There are seasons when the child of God endures loneliness arising from the absence of congenial society, and seasons of deep soul conflict when faith itself must fight for its life. In such hours we learn that though all may forsake us, yet we are not alone, for the Father is with us.
You tell us that you rise each morning with this burden and that you continue to give thanks and to call upon God. Hold fast to that holy practice. There are sifting seasons of joy and of sorrow, and the question is tried in both, will he always call upon God. The false heart ceases to pray when despondency comes, but the true heart pours out its complaint before the Lord still. To continue in prayer when the spirit is depressed is itself an evidence of grace at work. Keep calling upon Him, not only for relief, but for Himself, for His presence is better than the removal of the trial.
Concerning your reputation, take comfort that God sees the heart and knows the truth of every word. Have we never used a hasty word, have we never spoken without full knowledge, such is the frailty of us all. But to bear false witness, to turn a brief and imperfect acquaintance into an accusation that you played with another's affections, is grievous. If a man walks uprightly and leads a blameless life, he need not fear what others falsely say of him, for the Lord will be his vindication in His own time. Your sister and brother in law have spoken kindly on your behalf, and for that you may be thankful. Godly relatives hedge our way with prayer and often speak for us when we cannot speak for ourselves. Leave your name in the hands of Him who judges righteously. Your part is to walk in sincerity, to speak the truth with love, and to commit your cause to Him.
You have acknowledged that you acted quickly in closing the acquaintance, under great pressure of work and family sorrow. It is well to see this with humility. A social worker who bears the threats and sorrows of others, and a daughter who watches a mother in late stage kidney disease, carries a double load. In such weariness the judgment may be hastened and words may seem harsher than intended. Confess this freely to the Lord, who forgives through the blood of Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved. If an apology was due, you have offered it, and that is commendable. Beyond that, you are not required to compel another to think well of you. Pray for him, that the Lord would give him understanding and grace, but do not rest your peace upon his opinion. To wish him well and to release the matter into God's hands is the path of wisdom and quietness.
As for your loneliness and your desire for marriage, we hear the ache of your heart, especially as the holidays approach. Marriage, as Scripture shows us, is not a thing of chance or of mere companionship, but a covenant of choice, cemented by mutual love, wherein two become one. It is a lifelong union of one man and one woman, ordained of God and not to be entered lightly. We will not ask God to bless any relationship that is not according to His holy will, but we will pray that He will guide you in His perfect wisdom. If it be His will to bring a godly Christian man into your life, one who loves Christ first and will love you faithfully in that covenant, we pray He will do so in His time. And if He keeps you for a season in singleness, we pray He will make His own presence so near that you find fellowship even in solitude, for the marriage of the Lamb, the union of Christ and His Church, is the true source and pattern of all love. Seek first to be betrothed to Christ by faith, and all other mercies will be added as He sees best.
We will pray for you in this way. O Lord our God, look upon this Thy servant in her depression and loneliness. Thou knowest the stress of her labour, the sorrow for her mother, and the wound to her name. Comfort her with the knowledge that Jesus was lonely and misunderstood, and that He now lives to intercede. Grant her to continue in prayer, to cast her burden upon Thee, and to find Thy grace sufficient. Vindicate the truth as Thou seest fit, teach her to forgive as she has been forgiven through Christ, and guard her heart from bitterness. If it be Thy will, provide a godly husband who walks in faith and truth, but above all give her contentment in Christ, peace in her home, and strength for each day. Keep her in the fellowship of Thy people, and let her see that she is never truly alone, for Thou art with her. In Jesus name we ask this. Amen.
We urge you, dear soul, to walk closely with your church family in these weeks, to open your heart to a trusted pastor or mature believer, and if the heaviness remains severe, to seek help from a counselor or medical provider and to tell someone near you how deeply you feel this burden. Do not carry it in secret. The Lord often lifts us by the hands of His people. May He keep you, and make His face to shine upon you, and give you peace.
