Vanity and pride

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, recognizing the destructive nature of vanity and pride that has taken root in so many lives, including within families. These sins are an abomination in the sight of God, for they exalt self above the Creator and breed division, strife, and spiritual blindness. The Word of God is clear: *"Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall"* (Proverbs 16:18, WEB). It is a snare that enslaves the heart, turning it away from the humility and dependence on God that He commands.

The family is meant to be a reflection of Christ’s love and unity, but when pride enters, it corrupts relationships, fosters bitterness, and hinders repentance. The apostle Peter warns us, *"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time"* (1 Peter 5:5-6, WEB). This is not just a call to individuals but to families—parents, children, siblings—all must turn from the sin of pride and seek the Lord with broken and contrite hearts.

We also note that while this request acknowledges the need for repentance, it does not explicitly invoke the name of Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have access to the Father and by whom we are saved. There is no repentance, no forgiveness, and no transformation apart from Him. As Scripture declares, *"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* (Acts 4:12, WEB). If there is anyone in this family—or anyone reading this—who has not yet surrendered their life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we urge you to do so now. Repent of your sins, believe in His death and resurrection for your salvation, and submit to His lordship. Without this, no amount of prayer for repentance from pride will avail, for the heart remains in rebellion against God.

Let us also address the broader issue: pride is often the root of many other sins. It blinds us to our need for God, leads us to justify our wrongdoings, and keeps us from seeking forgiveness. It can manifest in subtle ways—through self-righteousness, an unwillingness to admit fault, or even in the way we pray, thinking our words or efforts can move God apart from His sovereign will. But the Lord looks at the heart, and He calls us to *"humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he will exalt you"* (James 4:10, WEB).

For the family in question, we pray that the Holy Spirit would convict each member of their pride and vanity. May He break the hardness of heart that resists repentance and replace it with a spirit of brokenness and surrender. Let them see the futility of exalting themselves and turn instead to exalting Christ, who alone is worthy. We pray for a spirit of unity and humility to permeate their home, where confession and forgiveness become the norm, and where Christ is honored as Lord over all.

We also pray for those who have been wounded by the pride of others—perhaps within this family or in other relationships. May the Lord heal those hurts and guard their hearts from bitterness. Let them respond not in kind but with the love and humility of Christ, who *"made himself of no reputation, taking the form of a servant"* (Philippians 2:7, WEB).

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We confess that pride and vanity have no place in the lives of Your people, yet we see how easily they creep in and take root. We ask for Your mercy and intervention in this family. Break the chains of pride that bind them. Soften hearts that have grown hard and resistant to Your voice. Grant them the grace to see their sin as You see it—to mourn over it and turn from it with genuine repentance.

Lord, we pray that You would raise up godly leaders within this family—those who will model humility and point others to Christ. Let their home be a place where Your Word is honored, where prayer is sincere, and where Your presence is welcomed. Remove every trace of vanity, every hint of self-exaltation, and replace it with a hunger for Your glory.

For those who do not yet know You, Lord, we pray that this season of conviction would lead them to the cross. May they see their need for a Savior and turn to Jesus Christ in faith. Let no one in this family remain in rebellion against You, but bring them all to the foot of the cross, where pride is shattered and true life begins.

We ask for Your healing and restoration where pride has caused division. Let forgiveness flow freely, and let love cover a multitude of sins. Teach them to walk in humility, serving one another as Christ served us. May their lives reflect the truth of Your Word: *"Don’t do anything from selfishness or emptiness, but with humility of mind let each of you regard the other as better than himself"* (Philippians 2:3, WEB).

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would guard this family from the enemy’s schemes. Pride is a tool of Satan to destroy Your people, but You are greater. Fill them with Your Spirit, that they may walk in wisdom and discernment, recognizing the snares of the devil and resisting them in Your strength.

We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Redeemer, who alone is worthy of all glory, honor, and praise. Amen.

We join our hearts with yours, dear family, in crying out to our Heavenly Father about the heavy burden of pride and vanity that's been weighing you down. It's like a stubborn weed in the garden of our lives, isn't it? It chokes out love, stifles unity, and poisons our relationships. But take heart, for our God is a God of second chances, of new beginnings.

Let's remember the story of the prodigal son. He was consumed by pride, by a desire to do things his own way. But when he hit rock bottom, he turned back to his father with a humble heart, and what did he find? Open arms, forgiveness, and a celebration. That's the heart of our Father for you today.

We pray that the Holy Spirit would gently convict each of your hearts, revealing the pride that's been hiding there. May He soften your hearts, making them receptive to His voice, to His call to humility. We ask that you would see yourselves as He sees you - beloved children, in need of His grace, not His condemnation.

Let's also remember that pride often masks deep-seated insecurities. We pray that the Lord would heal those wounds, filling you with a deep sense of His love and acceptance. That you would find your worth in Him, not in the eyes of others.

We lift up the leaders in your family - parents, grandparents, older siblings - that they would model humility and point others to Christ. We pray that your home would be a place of love, of forgiveness, of genuine worship.

For those who haven't yet surrendered their lives to Jesus, we pray that this would be the season they come to know Him. That they would see their need for a Savior, turn to Him in faith, and find true life in His love.

Finally, we pray for unity. That pride wouldn't divide you, but love would bind you together. That forgiveness would flow freely, and that you would serve one another as Christ served you.

In Jesus' mighty name, we pray. Amen.

I wanted to commit suicide once, I even came up with a plan. Right before I headed out the door I posted a prayer on here and hoping there might be help from God one last time I opened the Bible and only read take no thought for your life. I read that before at least 100 times but never really could understand how. This time I took it to heart, all right God I will end my life by not thinking about it. I take no thought, I take no thought, I take no thought over and over and over again I take no thought was my only thought that day. All of a sudden I noticed something, Jesus showed up, all my pains were gone, no neck ache, no back pain, no leg pain from many many accidents I had over the years and no pain in my heart as my wife had left me. I started singing praises and thanks to Jesus and my life has never been the same. It is our obedience to God from His Holy Instructions that makes a difference to His Power of His Promises in our lives.

Be a doer of Jesus friend, it really makes a difference! Thank You Lord Jesus!

Search the Bible for Jesus' Promises friend, do them and claim them in Jesus! Amen! Thank You Lord Jesus!
