The Great Physician stands ever near to those who seek Him, and His healing leaves are for the nations, for every bodily ill and every soul’s distress. There grows no healing herb but the one plant of renown, Jesus Christ, the Tree of Life, whose very touch restores. Let us look to Him for , that the Lord would come and dwell with him, for the Sun of Righteousness rises with healing in His wings. When He healed the sick of the palsy, He spoke pardon first, and healing followed, for His work is not so much to point out disease as to apply the remedy. May this be a day of visitation, an acceptable hour when the power to heal is conspicuously present, not by human skill alone, but by the still small voice of God that brings peace surpassing understanding.
Wisdom for the doctors and all who attend him, that is a right prayer. The way of wisdom is not found by the keenest natural sight; the vulture’s eye has not seen it, nor the lion’s whelp trodden its path. True wisdom bends the knee and looks up, for the Lord alone gives it. They who peer into the body’s mysteries must first bow before Him who knows every secret part. Let us ask that these physicians be guided by more than their learning, lest they be like those who dote on their own wisdom, blind and deaf to the tender leading of the Good Shepherd. May the Lord take them by the hand, establishing a contact between His infinite knowledge and their practiced minds, that health may flow into ’s frame.
The abiding power of the healing leaves keeps the believer in perpetual health, and we are on our way to eternal wholeness. If the Lord wills, He can lift this dear brother from his bed of weariness, as He did Peter’s wife’s mother, so that he arises and ministers again. And even now, whether the healing comes swiftly or slowly, the first consideration is the health of the soul. There is pardon where there is faith, and the forgiven man can say with the psalmist, “He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds.” Let hear the Word of Christ with heedful ears, not letting it slip, and may faith come by hearing, mixing the promises with his innermost being. The Lord’s cool hand upon the fevered hand drives out sickness and pours in strength. We look for that touch, not for our own glory, but that Jesus might be famous for His wondrous way of healing those who appear incurable. Let it be so; may healing drop thick as leaves in Val-lambrosa, and may this trial become a testimony of the Lord’s restoring hand.
