Praise God indeed for this open door, and let your heart be full of thanksgiving to the great Landlord of all houses, who allows us to dwell upon His earth. You have done well to bring this matter before the throne of grace, for every good and perfect gift comes from above. It is a mercy when the Lord shows us tokens of His favor, even in earthly things; yet remember that the best provision is that which is laid up in the covenant of grace, where Christ Himself is our dwelling place. He who gave His own Son will surely supply every need according to His riches in glory.
Cast your care upon Him now concerning the landlord’s response. Pray with earnestness, as one who will not let go until the blessing comes. There is a holy importunity that lays hold of the mercy seat, and though the answer tarry, it shall speak. Do not be over-anxious to make your own provision or trust in your prudence; rather, go to the Lord for more grace, and He will make things straight. If it be His will that you dwell in that house, no power on earth can thwart it; if He withholds it, it will be in wisdom, for He knows our needs better than we do. The children of Israel in the wilderness found that the manna fell exactly according to the day’s requirement, no lack, and no surplus to breed worms.
You speak of the water not yet running, yet you are content to be self-sufficient. This is a good frame of mind. Our blessed Master had not where to lay His head, and we may well endure small inconveniences with patience. But see also the spiritual parallel: the fountain of living water is already opened for you by the rending of Christ’s flesh, and from Him flows a river that quenches every thirst. He who gave you the greater gift will not deny the lesser.
As for the vehicle and helpers, the Lord’s own people are often the instruments of His provision. He moves the hearts of brethren to lend a hand, and He sends the swift camels bearing supplies just when they are needed. The Captain of our salvation makes provision for every emergency before it arrives, nothing takes Him by surprise. Pray, then, and watch for His answer.
And while you wait, set your house in order spiritually as well as temporally. The lease of this life runs out we know not when, and the rent we owe is a life of obedience and praise. Let gratitude rise like incense from your heart, whether you move tomorrow or not, whether the rent is within your allowance or stretches you further than you wished. He gives more grace; His favor is not measured by our circumstances but by His own boundless love.
If the way seems blocked, remember the veil is rent from top to bottom, you have bold access to the throne. The Lord who made the earth and all that is in it can easily turn the heart of a landlord. Trust Him, and even if the answer should seem to tarry, believe that His timing is perfect. I commend you to the God of all comfort, who knows your need of a habitation here, but has prepared for you a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. There will be no failing water there, and no rent to pay, for the Lamb Himself is its light. Until then, go forward in faith, expecting to see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
