There are burdens that can be spoken to a brother, and there are burdens so heavy, so tangled with the inward life, that they can only be laid before God in sighs and groanings which cannot be uttered. This request, wrapped in that single repeated word, tells me that the weight lies in the secret places of the soul, where no human eye can look. Into this secret no man can enter, for the door is sealed by a royal decree. We think we must feel a certain way or reach a certain stage before we come, but the command is to come just as we are. If you say, "Lord, I cannot trust You unless I feel this or that," then you, in effect, make a god out of your feelings and a savior out of your inward griefs. Can you now trust your soul with Jesus? Nothing is more strange than that anyone should raise a question about trusting Him.
What a wound it makes in the heart if we inwardly confess we have been unfaithful, if there is a secret spot that fills us with shame. It may be the burden of original sin, that perverted constitution which we each must carry for ourselves. It may be the solemn guilt of secret sin, a fault hidden from every eye but the Divine. But know this: that guilt is guilt, discovered or undiscovered, and we are not the less sinful because we sin in the dark. The misery of secret faults truly calls forth the cry, "Cleanse thou me from secret faults." Yet, you are not to have a sense of cleansing before you trust Him; you are to trust Him for this very thing. As you sink, trust. Before long, if you trust Jesus, you shall know His love. Do not sit on the top of your burden, fretting and crying, asking somebody else to bear the burden that is yours to bring to the Savior.
Every man shall bear his own burden. This means everyone must come, with his own sin, to his own Savior, and by his own act of faith, must find peace through the blood of Jesus Christ. Happy is that man who searches the Word, looking for the hidden spiritual sense, the kernel of life within. Before you knew the secret, a promise was a mere dogma, but learning that Jesus never changes makes it music to the ear. And though you may be a hidden one, not understood by others, perhaps a secret disciple, you are not hidden from the Lord. He sees that hot tear. You need not go to Him with a full explanation; only go. If you have not any other trust, and all the trust you have is set on Him, though it be mixed with doubts, God will lead you to trust Him and to rejoice. Come and get rid of the old burden, and He will put upon you His own, until you prove that Christ's yoke is indeed easy and His burden is light. Look your doubts and cares away; plead His promise, trust His grace.
