The very fact that your request is unspoken is no barrier to the throne of grace. There is a silent prayer which darts upward like an arrow from a bow drawn in secret; Artaxerxes never knew that Nehemiah prayed, though he stood within a yard of him. And so your heart may be pleading with God in deep, wordless groans, and He hears it as distinctly as the thunderclap. You have a burden which you cannot even put into speech, a weight that presses upon your spirit so heavily that words fail you. This is not a sign that prayer is impossible, but rather that the Holy Spirit is groaning within you with groanings which cannot be uttered. We need not be afraid of such moments; indeed, our very inability to frame a petition may be the Spirit's own working, teaching us our absolute dependence upon Him.
Consider for a moment the nature of burdens. Every man shall bear his own burden, says the Apostle, and no other soul can carry yours for you. Yet that is not the whole of the matter, for we are also commanded to bear one another's burdens. Do not, then, nurse your sorrow in proud isolation, as though you could manage it alone. There are burdens which no human friend can share, the burden of original sin, the weight of a fallen nature, the secret grief that is too confidential for any ear but God's, but even these Christ invites you to lay upon Him. He does not sit coldly by while you struggle in silence. He came to visit those who sit in darkness, to be touched with the feeling of our infirmities, to carry a load far heavier than yours, even the weight of the world's sin upon the Cross. If He bore that, can He not bear your unspoken trial? His heart is tender; His arm is strong. You have not a pennyweight of your own to carry, for you are not your own master, but His servant, and He bids you exchange your yokes.
I urge you to take your secret burden often to the private audience chamber of your God. Is there a need for which you would not seek relief from Him? Is there a dilemma in which you would not consult Him? There is a confidential friendship between the soul and its Lord which transforms the darkest sorrow. When the tempest rages, the man who knows only the devouring waves may give way to alarm, but the quiet, silent trust that says, “My Father made them all,” brings calmness and composure. Go to Him with your unspoken grief; let the silent prayer shoot upward constantly through the day. Brief, silent petitions are of great use, they check our sinful passions, they steady our souls, they keep us in that holy nearness which is our safety. You need no mediator other than the one Mediator, no eloquence but the blood of Jesus to plead your cause.
And remember this: Christ’s own burden is light. What is it? It is the yoke of submission to His will, the load of love, the service which He appoints. It is not the fretting, self-inflicted weight of our own anxieties. When you come to Him with your unspoken need, you are not merely asking for relief; you are asking to exchange your heavy, galling burden for His easy one. Lay before Him your sorrow, your fear, your perplexity, though it be too deep for words, and then leave it with Him. Do not sit down upon the heap of your cares, as though you had no Savior. The promise is to those who fear Him, and He will show them His covenant. The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him. Oh, if you have looked to Christ, you need not despair! He is holy, He is true, He has the key of David which unlocks the treasury of all covenant blessings. Fear Him, trust Him, and let the Holy Spirit, your private Tutor and Comforter, apply the truth to your heart. Even now, in your silent anguish, you may prove that His grace is sufficient for you, for when you are weakest, then you are strong. Cast your unspoken burden upon the Lord; He will sustain you. He will never suffer the righteous to be moved.
