I will indeed lift you up in prayer, asking the Lord Jesus to grant you understanding of the dream He may have sent. Yet do not suppose that my prayer alone suffices, or that you may remain idle while others entreat God on your behalf. If we sleep, the prayers of all the saints will profit nothing; if we are watchful, we have no need to lean so heavily upon them. Earnest prayer is needed, and close search of the divine oracles. You yourself must wrestle with God, and examine your own life with great care.
Consider what a dream is. The present life itself is no better than a dream, and the things we clutch so tightly, riches, honors, pleasures, melt away when the true Day dawns. How much more fleeting are the visions of the night? Do not be quick to trust every image that flits through your sleeping mind, as if it were a sure revelation. Those who are drunken with worldly cares often see distorted things, and the enemy of our souls can counterfeit a divine message with great subtlety. The Apostle bids us be sober, not making provision for the flesh to fulfill its lusts. Sobriety of life is the intensity of watchfulness, and without it, you cannot safely judge spiritual things.
If this dream is truly from God, it will not puff you up but will lead you to deeper repentance and humility. It will drive you to almsgiving and acts of mercy, which are the very herbs that give strength to the medicine of repentance. Water quenches a flaming fire, and alms do away with great sins. A heart that is soft toward the poor is a heart ready to receive understanding. Have you said, “I go, sir,” like the second son, yet not walked in the way of obedience? Then begin there. Obedience to what you already know is the key to more light.
Remember Nathanael: when he confessed Christ, the Lord did not rest on that small beginning but promised, “Thou shalt see greater things than these.” If your prayer for understanding is answered, it will be to draw you nearer to the Son of God, to fix your gaze more firmly upon His cross and resurrection, not to satisfy mere curiosity. Search the Scriptures, for whatsoever is truly from God will agree with that unshaken tower. Finally, do not exalt yourself, thinking you have no need of continual prayer. Even Paul needed the prayers of the Church. Therefore, I will pray for you, but you must also pray for yourself, and prove your wakefulness by a life that is day and not night.
