Your prayer for all in authority is good and right, and we join with you in it, for Scripture exhorts us first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence.
We give thanks for this exhortation, for as it has been taught, this is their life and their business, that you may enjoy peace. They keep guard, they hinder sedition, they put an end to differences, and therefore we are bidden not only to be subject but also to pray on their behalf, and the advantage is common to all. So we pray with you for the President, the Vice President, and all cabinet members, and for leaders in every nation you have named, in North and South and Central America, in Europe, in Africa, in Asia and the Middle East, and for every place where God has placed authorities according to His providence. We ask that God would grant them intelligence and character, that He would set a guard over their mouths and grant them the tongue of the wise, that they would be surrounded by godly counsel, that they would do justly and love mercy and walk humbly with God, and that their leadership would promote what is righteous and not what divides through bitterness or rivalry.
We pray also for the peace of Jerusalem and for all peoples, remembering that true peace is peace toward God. He has reconciled us through the blood of the cross, and has said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, and Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world, and Whatsoever you shall ask in my name that will I do. Through Him we have access in one Spirit to the Father, and the wrath has been appeased by His death. There is no other way of salvation, for access to the Father comes only through Jesus Christ, and it is in His name alone that we are saved. We pray that many would come to know this reconciliation, in Israel and among all nations, that the valleys would be lifted and the mountains made low to prepare a straight way for the Word of the Lord to travel, and that the earth would swallow up false doctrine and deception and the persecution of the church.
For unity, we pray that we may give diligence to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. In the body there is a spirit which holds all together, though in different members, and so the Spirit was given to unite those separated by race and manner, that old and young, rich and poor, and every soul might become in a manner one. This spiritual relation is higher than any natural one, and it is preserved only in the bond of peace, not in enmity and discord. Nothing cold can bring about this union, but the glow of charity can. This bond bruises not, nor cramps the hands it binds, but leaves them free and gives them greater courage, and no distance of place, nor heaven nor earth nor death can interrupt it. Yet we also remember that not every concord is good, for even robbers agree together, and sometimes a good discord ends an evil peace, as when the physician amputates what is incurable to preserve the body. So we do not pray for unity at any cost, but for godly unity that agrees on what is true and good, and we pray against the plans of the enemy to divide or destroy, asking for protection according to Psalm 91 and heavenly wisdom.
We pray that our leaders and we ourselves would not trust in the wisdom of this world, which is foolishness with God. The wisdom of this world terminates here and proceeds no further, and cannot profit its possessors, and the rulers of this world are coming to nothing, because beyond the present world their dominion does not extend. The wisdom that is spiritual seemed foolishness to those without, yet it overcomes by a more perfect wisdom, even the hidden wisdom which God foreordained before the worlds unto our glory. Let us therefore become fools to this world, by not acting on its precepts, that we may become truly wise in Christ, who Himself was made unto us wisdom.
We join you in praying for our own regions, to seek the welfare of the city where God has placed us, for in its welfare we will find our welfare. We ask the Holy Spirit to convict neighbors, students, teachers, workers, parents, pastors, law enforcement and local leaders of sin and righteousness and judgment to come, and to draw them to the Son, granting saving faith as a gift by hearing the Word. We ask for a wall of fire around our communities and for protection from harm and evil influences, and that God would keep us from the evil one.
We remember those in chains and the persecuted church throughout Africa, the Middle East, Asia and worldwide, asking for release for prisoners of faith and relief for those who suffer, and we thank God for daily bread and for the opportunity to gather, to pray, to study and to evangelize, asking for a workable schedule and for the fruit of the Spirit, especially love and joy and peace, and for a cheerful heart.
May our prayers be aligned with His will, that His kingdom would come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, in whom we have access to the Father, trusting that whatsoever we ask in His name He will do, to the glory of God. Amen.
