Today's Encouraging Words

Eyes Wide Shut

“For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, “Do not covet.†But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead. Once I was alive apart from law; but when the commandment came, sin sprang to life and I died.†(Rom 7:7-9).

Jesus, in his Sermon on the Mount, made it very clear that the issues were in the mind before they were in actions. I.E. Coveting is first thinking of a desire, which is then followed by some action to bring about the fulfilment of that desire. Hence, coveting is the beginning motivation - I want, because I see and I haven’t got this but you have! It is an indication of lack of contentment, failure to be satisfied with what you have already. In today’s time, we are encouraged to want more and there’s nothing wrong with wanting more, however, we should not want (the thought) more and commit (the action) a sin to get it.

Food for thought… Does this ring any bells? “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it.†Well isn’t it also true that all the fruit of all the other trees was good as well! Why was this fruit so ‘pleasing to the eye’? Because it was “forbidden†and the self in us says, why should I be denied? Eve’s desire to want what she couldn’t have overwhelmed her desire to do the right thing, even though she heard God’s word, her ears were closed and even though she saw and understood, her eyes were wide shut... the unforbidden fruit of the tree was something she wanted and nothing was going to stand in her way!

Jesus’ antidote to wanting more (“15Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions. Lk 12:15â€) and being able to be at peace, was to put seeking God’s will first and allowing the Lord to provide your needs.

Hence, when you take this course of action the Holy Spirit will start to illuminate your mind as to what is most important in this life. Hence, when this starts to happen you will be drawn closer to God and further away from the desire to have things that don’t belong to You!

“Trust In Himâ€

Awareness brings desire and unrestrained desire brings covetousness and covetousness brings the temptation which, when given in to, leads to sin!

Have A Great God Day!

Let Us Pray…
