Disciple of Prayer
My identity opposes the twists and turns of my relationship and prays to the punisher for what made it possible to scream at the target, leading to the punishment of the widow and two sons?

We have heard your heart in this request even though the words are difficult to understand, and we bring it before the Lord together seeking His will in Jesus' name. You speak of your identity being opposed to the twists and turns of your relationship, of screaming at a target, and of a punisher and punishment coming upon a widow and two sons, and we want to gently bring clarity and biblical truth to each of these burdens.

First we want to address where you are directing your prayer. You mention praying to the punisher, but we do not pray to a punisher, we pray to God the Father alone and we come to Him only through Jesus Christ His Son. There is no other mediator and no other name by which we are saved or heard. As it is written, Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not yet trusted in Jesus, we invite you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, and you will be saved Romans 10:9. It is only through His blood that we have access to God and forgiveness for our sins.

We also hear confusion about identity and relationship. Our identity is not to be found in the twists and turns of a relationship, but in Christ alone. When we are in Christ we are a new creation, the old things have passed away, behold all things have become new 2 Corinthians 5:17 and we are chosen, a royal priesthood, a holy nation 1 Peter 2:9. God formed you and knows you fully, you are fearfully and wonderfully made Psalm 139:14, and He desires to anchor you when relationships feel unstable. If you are in a relationship, we encourage you to view it biblically. We believe marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman as God designed it, and any courtship should be between two believers in Christ with the goal of godly marriage that honors Him. It should be marked by purity, love, and self control, for love is patient and is kind, love does not envy, does not brag, is not proud 1 Corinthians 13:4. If there has been sexual intimacy outside of marriage, that is fornication and if with someone married to another it is adultery, and God calls us to flee from sexual immorality and to pursue holiness 1 Corinthians 6:18, Hebrews 13:4. We do not know the details of your relationship, but we urge you to examine whether it is leading you toward holiness and marriage or toward confusion and sin.

We also must address the screaming at the target and the desire for punishment. Anger itself can be a signal, but screaming at another person and desiring punishment for them does not reflect the Spirit of Christ. The Scripture says Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath Ephesians 4:26 and Let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger James 1:19. We are to put away anger, wrath, malice, and abusive language Colossians 3:8 and instead give a soft answer which turns away wrath Proverbs 15:1. Vengeance does not belong to us, for it is written Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord Romans 12:19. We are called to do justice, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with our God Micah 6:8. If you have lashed out in anger, we encourage you to repent before God and to seek forgiveness from those you have hurt, for If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9.

Your mention of punishment falling on a widow and two sons deeply concerns us, for God has a special care for the widow and the fatherless. He is A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in his holy habitation Psalm 68:5 and Pure religion and undefiled before our God and Father is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction James 1:27. If you are aware of a widow and children suffering unjustly, or if you feel responsible for harm that has come to them through your words or actions, we urge you to seek to make amends where possible and to intercede for their protection and provision, trusting that The Lord will maintain the cause of the afflicted, and justice for the needy Psalm 140:12.

We join together now to pray for you, for that relationship, and for that widow and her sons.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, the only name by which we may approach Your throne. We lift up this dear one whose identity feels shaken and whose relationship feels full of twists and turns. Lord, anchor them in who they are in Christ, remind them that they are Yours, forgiven, loved, and made new. Bring peace where there is confusion and bring Your wisdom where there is turmoil. If this relationship is not honoring to You, give courage to make it right, to pursue purity and to seek a godly marriage if it is Your will, or to step away from what is not of You. Forgive any sin of anger and harsh words, any screaming and desire for punishment, and cleanse this heart and mouth to speak with grace and truth. We repent on their behalf and ask for Your mercy. We also lift up the widow and her two sons before You, Lord. We do not fully know their story, but You do. Protect them, provide for them, defend them, and let no unjust punishment remain upon them. Let Your justice and Your mercy meet over their lives. Heal what has been broken and restore what has been harmed. Help this one who prayed to turn fully to You, to trust Jesus as Savior and Lord, and to walk in the new life You give. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage you to remain in the Word, to pray daily in Jesus' name, and to seek counsel from a faithful Bible believing church where you can be discipled and where relationships can be guided by Scripture. God sees you and hears you when you come through Christ, and He is able to bring clarity, forgiveness, and restoration.

We've been sitting with your words and we sense how heavy and confusing this feels, like your sense of who you are is being pulled against a relationship that has taken difficult turns. It's painful to feel caught between wanting to cry out and not knowing where that cry lands, especially when you are worried about others being hurt.

We want to gently remind you that your worth and identity are not decided by the twists in any relationship. In Christ you are known, loved, and held steady even when circumstances feel tangled and loud. When thoughts feel knotted, it can help to come back to that simple, secure place of being God's beloved child, the one He sees and keeps.

It might help to take a quiet moment to write down in plain words what is most on your heart today, just one or two sentences to bring to the Lord, and then share them with one trusted, calm person, a pastor or mature believer who can listen well and walk with you. You don't have to sort everything alone.

Father, we lift our friend to You right now. You know the confusion, the relationship strain, and the concern for others. Cover them with Your peace, clear their mind, guard their heart, and lead them step by step in Your wisdom and kindness. Help them rest in who they are in You and feel Your nearness today. In Jesus' name, amen.

There is a burden in your words which I have heard, and it is brought before the Lord with trembling. You speak of identity at war with the course of a relationship, of a cry for punishment, and of sorrow that has touched a widow and two sons, and you ask that God would act as a punisher toward another.

Hear first what the Word declares for such a troubled conscience, that there is forgiveness with God. It is a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions, and it is a surprising forgiveness, so full and free that it seems too great to be true, yet it is true. Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. However sinful your life may have been up until now, there is forgiveness with God even for you, and it is to be found only through Jesus Christ His Son, who died, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God. This forgiveness is not partial but complete, the tally destroyed, the record of your debt nailed to the Cross, and it is an eternal forgiveness, for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.

You must know also who it is that forgives and who it is that judges. The day of vengeance is in His heart, and vengeance does belong to the Lord, yet for the sinner who flees to Christ that day of vengeance is already past, for vengeance smote our Surety's head and legal claims are fully met. We are not taught to pray that fire should fall upon those who have wronged us, but to do as Christ did, who lived forgiving and died praying, Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. The most splendid vengeance you can have is to do good to them that do you evil, and to speak well of them that speak ill of you, even as Christ forgave you, so also do you.

Concerning identity and relationship, the Scripture gives a sure anchor. Our identity is not to be forged in the twists and turns of desire or affection, but in Christ, who makes us new creatures. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and His design for holy living remains, that marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and that the union of the body belongs only within that covenant. Whatever in us opposes that design is not to be celebrated or blessed, but to be brought in penitence to the mercy seat, where there is forgiveness for every sin that is confessed and forsaken. God does not bless what He calls sin, but He abundantly pardons all who return to Him through the blood of His Son.

Therefore I will not ask the Lord to bless a path that runs against His Word, nor to send punishment upon the one at whom you would scream, nor upon that household of which you speak. Rather, this is my prayer for you and for them.

O Lord, our God, with whom there is forgiveness, look upon this soul who trembles and desires to be clean. Convict of sin where there has been sin in thought, in identity claimed apart from Christ, in relationship pursued outside Thy holy covenant, in anger and bitter words that have wounded others. Grant repentance and faith to trust in Jesus alone for salvation. Blot out transgressions for His sake, and give a new heart that loves what Thou lovest. Heal the twists and turns that have brought confusion, and set feet upon the rock of Thy truth. Have mercy also upon the widow and her two sons of whom sorrow is spoken, and upon the one regarded as a target, and keep us all from seeking vengeance, since Thou hast said vengeance is Thine. Teach this soul to forgive even as Christ has forgiven, and to walk in purity and peace. Let the whisper enter and drive despair away, there is forgiveness, there is forgiveness with Thee, that Thou mayest be feared. Amen.

Seek the Lord while He may be found, believe in the forgiveness of sins not as a distant hope but for yourself at this moment, and continue daily to seek that forgiveness which He continues to bestow upon all who come to Him through Christ.
