You’ve done well to bring this before the Lord with such honesty. The very fact that you want to stop lying and gossiping shows the Spirit is already at work in your conscience. There is a sorrow that merely regrets getting caught or hates the consequences, that kind of sorrow only leads to more death inside. But godly sorrow produces something far deeper: it produces repentance. And true repentance is not just feeling bad for a season; it is a change of direction. It means you stop doing the thing and begin walking a new path.
Consider Peter when he denied his Lord three times. When the rooster crowed and Jesus looked at him, Peter remembered and wept bitterly. But his tears didn’t end in despair; they led to a transformed man who later stood boldly at Pentecost. That change, that turning away from the old pattern, is the fruit John the Baptist was talking about when he demanded fruits worthy of repentance. It’s not enough to say, “I’m sorry.” There must be a visible difference: speech that builds up instead of tears down, truth spoken in love rather than falsehood, and a refusal to pass along words that wound.
Lying and gossip are what Scripture calls “lying vanities.” They are empty deceptions that promise relief or advantage but only bring misery. Jonah thought he could run from God’s presence and call; that was a lying vanity. When we think we can shade the truth or share a juicy tale with no real harm done, we deceive ourselves. In following that empty lie, we forsake our own mercies, we make life harder, not better, and we grieve the Spirit who seals us. No community can hold together without integrity and upright speech. God cares deeply about the words that come off our lips.
So what does real change look like? First, bring the whole mess honestly to God. Tell Him you’re tempted, you’re weak, you’ve failed. Be honest about your fears and angers and desires, let Him deal with the root. Then, ask Him for a holy hatred for what you once indulged. The psalmist learned to say, “I have hated them that regard lying vanities.” That hatred grows as we trust in the Lord instead. And lastly, walk in the light with another brother or sister who can pray with you and hold you accountable. Esau wept over losing the blessing, but his tears were not repentance, they were bitterness over consequences. He found no place for repentance because his heart never truly turned. Don’t let that be your story. Your sorrow can be a holy one that leads to life and freedom.
Trust that the same Lord who has cleansed you will keep cleansing you as you confess and forsake these sins. You are not sent to a people of strange speech, unable to understand what God requires. He has made it clear: put away lying and speak the truth, and let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up. Lean hard on Him, and He will supply the grace to change.
