The longing for a child is a deep and beautiful desire, woven by God into the very fabric of family and creation. It is right to bring that yearning before Him, and to ask for His blessing on your health and on the life you hope to nurture. Scripture shows us that the Lord is intimately concerned with our physical well-being. When He gave His law to Israel, so much of it was a gracious health code, rules about diet, cleanliness, and rest, designed to set them apart from the diseases that plagued the nations around them. He declared Himself to be the Lord who heals. That same care has not diminished. He wants you to be healthy, and it is not a shallow thing to pray for a strong body and a healthy baby. Your request is one that honors Him.
At the same time, we must hold this truth with an open hand. We sometimes hear the words from John’s letter, where he writes, “I wish above all things that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers,” and we cling to it as an ironclad promise. But that is not what it is. It is a warm, apostolic greeting, a beautiful prayer from a friend to a friend. It expresses a holy wish that a person’s physical life would match the flourishing of their inner life. Yet we know from the whole testimony of Scripture, and from life itself, that a thriving soul does not guarantee a trouble-free body. A man in peak condition can be suddenly taken, while another lives with chronic weakness for decades. A baby might be given only a few hours. We do not know the reasons, and it is often foolish to try to force an explanation. Our calling is not to solve the mystery, but to trust the One who holds it.
So, pray with all your heart for this good gift. As you do, nurture the health of your soul, because there is a profound connection between our inner state and our physical well-being. A spirit at rest in God, consciously dependent on Him, is a healthy thing. Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of life. That wisdom is health to your flesh. And as you pray, anchor your hope not in receiving the exact answer you envision, but in the character of God. I pray that you would have the grace to thank Him for health if He grants it, and to receive sufficient grace even if the path involves a weak or sickly body, or a longer wait than you desire.
Consider how God ordered a seemingly inconvenient census from a ruler in Rome, compelling a young couple to make a miserable, seventy-mile journey at the most critical point of a pregnancy. To human eyes, it looked like burdensome government meddling. But it was the fulfillment of a seven-hundred-year-old prophecy, moving the pieces so the Messiah would be born exactly where it was foretold. God is pulling strings for your good that you cannot see right now. He is able to work through your body, through doctors, and through the very timing of things to bring about His purposes. Rest in that. Your part is obedience and trust; His part is the outcome. May He bless your family with good health, and may your soul continue to prosper in the truth, which is the only unshakeable ground on which to stand.
