The weariness of the body cries out for the sight of the sea and the breath of the mountains, and not without reason, for even our mortal frame must have its seasons of repose. Yet, let us not forget that the Lord Jesus says, “I will give you rest”, not merely rest from toil, but rest in the midst of it, rest on the wing, rest in motion. The true rest He gives is not found in the absence of labour, but in learning of Him, taking His yoke, and finding that His service is perfect freedom. Even now, you who have believed do enter into rest, and that rest can sweeten any place, whether by the shore or on the heights.
Your extremity of exhaustion is God’s opportunity. When we come to the end of ourselves, we reach the beginning of His working. The sea you long to behold may be the very path by which He would teach you to trust Him, as those who write of long voyages must travel far out of sight of land. Yet, remember: the mountains that seem to divide you from your heart’s desire are not barriers to Him. As the young hart skips over the hills, so our Beloved can come leaping over the mountains to meet you, bringing refreshing to your soul. And if it be His will to grant you a journey to the seaside or to the peaks, He can do so with ease.
I will pray with you for that travel, asking the Father, in Jesus’ name, to open a door for you to find bodily renewal. But I would be less than a faithful minister if I did not urge you to seek your deepest rest in the Lord Himself. “Rest in the Lord”, not merely in His gifts, but in His person. The mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but His kindness never shall. In every relationship into which He has brought Himself to you, there is a rest to be found, a contentment that ambition cannot steal and avarice cannot corrupt. So, while I join you in asking for a season of change and refreshment, I plead with you to take the rest Christ gives now, the perfect peace of mind that comes from fixed belief, the quietness of soul that endures when outward circumstances are weary. Trust, and you shall rest.
That holiday you seek may indeed be a picture of heaven’s rest, where there are no Monday mornings and eternal repose awaits. But even here, in labour and service, there is a glorious rest that makes us ready for more service, watchful against sin, and pressing forward in grace. May you find such rest unto your soul, and may the Lord, in His kindness, soon set you beside still waters and grant you the joy of travelling mercies. Amen.
