The cry of your heart reaches the ear of the Lord of hosts, and He knows the longings for the sea and the hills. The very frame that aches for change and the spirit that pines for other scenes are not unknown to Him, for He cares for you. Yet remember, soul, that the rest you crave in travel and in the sight of waters is but a shadow of a deeper, truer rest, the rest which Christ gives to all who come weary and heavy laden to Him. The seaside would soothe for a season, but His promise is, I will give you rest. Seek first that inner repose which the world cannot give and cannot take away, and then trust Him who feeds the sparrows to grant also the lesser gift of bodily refreshment.
You speak of missing the sea and longing to travel; these are lawful desires, and He who made both the mountains and the deep can open a door for you to enjoy them. But let not your heart be fixed on the journey as though without it you could have no peace. The children of Israel looked for Canaan as their rest, yet even there they faced battles. Our true rest is in Christ Himself, rest of conscience through His blood, rest of mind by leaning on His bosom, rest of heart in the Father's love. Have you found this? If you have believed in Jesus, you have entered into rest even now, though your feet tread the city streets and your ears hear the din of labor. That rest is yours forever, unshaken by care or confinement. From that sure harbor, you may pray with boldness for a time of retreat by the waves, and the Lord who notes the sparrow's fall will heed your request in His own wise time and way.
Do not imagine that rest is found only in ceasing from work or in changing your place. The truest rest is enjoyed when the soul is doing the will of God with a quiet heart. Even the Lord Himself rests in His love and in His Church, finding His delight in His people. So may you find rest in the midst of duty, taking His yoke upon you and learning of Him, for He is meek and lowly, and you shall find rest for your soul. Then, whether by the sea or in your own dwelling, you will be at peace. Cast this care upon Him, for He cares for you. Tell Him your weariness, your years without a holiday, your love for the spray and the mountain air. He listens, and His heart is tender. He gave the Sabbath to weary man as a token of the rest He desires to give. Trust Him, and wait. He may soon surprise you with kindness, opening a path to the shore or the hills. Even if He delays, His grace will be sufficient, and His presence will be your refreshment until the day He grants your heart's desire. Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.
