The cry of this prayer rises from a true knowledge of the plague within. The stubborn and rebellious generation perished not because they lacked outward signs, but because their heart was not loyal, their spirit not faithful. This is the very heart of the matter. The Holy Spirit searches the heart and tries the reins of the children of men, and He knows that it is no more useful to sing a hymn than to sing a song unless it is sung with the heart. The heart, the heart, the heart, that is the vital place. What you have felt in crying out for a fixed heart and a faithful spirit is the Spirit of God beginning to drive the sword home. I would rather you were cut to the heart than not wounded at all, for He who wounds the heart is also the Comforter, the Quickener who makes alive.

Consider this: when Christ arises upon the heart, what a glorious transformation is worked. Where there has been no love, no faith, none of the blessed fruits, no sooner does Christ come than we perceive all the Graces in blossom. The stubbornness you lament cannot be starved out by your own resolve. The first trembling desire after God, the very prayer you have uttered, came from His Spirit. The love of God itself is like light to a blind eye until the Holy Spirit opens that eye, and it is like spikenard unperceived until He brings it to the spiritual senses. If you are distressed in heart, God sees your distress. If you are crying in secret in the bitterness of your soul, God hears your cry. You are not alone. Do not seek Him any longer as though He were far off; you have got Him, for He is near unto them who are of a broken heart.

Do not look to the measure of your own faithfulness as the ground of your hope. Look to the love which so lived on nothing but its own resources. He loved His people before all worlds, and has He ever turned away His heart? No, it is your solemn duty to bear witness to His faithfulness. The Spirit remains with us to aid, to convict, to regenerate, to console. Prove that you are a sinner and there is everything for you, for the whole drift of what Christ is doing now is towards the sinful. He came to save men as sinners. As surely as you are one of His children, He will fetch you home, yet it is also required in stewards that a man be found faithful. So be faithful to your office, whatever it may be; do what you have to do with all your heart, mind, soul and strength, looking only to the Spirit for the power.

The Spirit of God worked faith in me, and I believed. That is the testimony of all the saints. In the hour of sore trouble it was God who performed all things for us. Wait on the Lord. Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart. Wait, I say, on the Lord. Christ Jesus is the perfect example of devotion, and when He rises upon you, the sweet perfume of divine love, shed abroad in the heart by the Holy Spirit, will be recognized by your inner man. You have laid bare the very sickness that ails so many souls: a heart that is not loyal, a spirit not faithful. You speak of stubbornness and rebellion, of seeing God's wonders and yet turning away. This is no small matter. For what does it profit a man to honor God with his lips if his heart is far from Him? The Lord does not look at the outward show; He searches the inward parts. You ask for a fixed heart, a faithful spirit. That is the right prayer, but know this: faith is no easy thing. It is not a lazy acceptance. It requires a soul of vigor, a mind that wrestles down the doubts that rise like a storm.

Consider Abraham. God promised him a son when his body was as good as dead, and Sarah's womb barren. Human calculation cried out, "Impossible!" Yet he did not stagger at the promise through unbelief. He gave glory to God, being fully persuaded that what God had promised, He was able also to perform. This is the loyalty of heart the psalmist speaks of, not a faith that merely nods at the truth, but one that takes hold of God's word when everything in nature screams against it. When you pray for a faithful spirit, you are asking for strength to stand against the wind of reasonings and feelings that would shipwreck your soul. For if Peter's faith had been steadfast, he would not have sunk, even with the waves crashing about him. The wind has no power to harm when faith stands firm.

And what is the root of rebellion? It is to say in your heart, "How can this be?" It is to measure God's promises by the paltry yardstick of your own understanding. Stubbornness is not merely an act of the will; it is a disease of the heart that refuses to trust the One who has shown Himself mighty. The Israelites saw the sea part, they ate bread from heaven, and still their hearts were not loyal. Why? Because they let their reasonings eat away at their faith. They honored God with their lips, but their hearts were far from Him. Do you see? Outward action without inward devotion is a corpse.

You pray to be kept from such a path. Then learn from the nobleman whose child was healed. He heard the word of Christ, "Thy son liveth," and he believed, and his whole house believed. He did not demand to see the miracle before he trusted. He went his way, and the evidence followed. That is true loyalty: to trust the bare word of God when no proof is given. And what happened? Not only was his child saved, but his entire household was brought to faith. A faithful heart is never barren; it bears fruit in those around you.

Therefore, do not merely pray for a loyal heart; labor for it. Fight against the listlessness that makes you sluggish in believing. As the Apostle says, confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you shall be saved. See how the word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart. Do not seek signs or ascend to heaven to bring Christ down. Embrace the faith delivered to you, and let it be not a shallow thing, but a deep, wholehearted commitment. Then your spirit will not be faithless, but you will be strong in faith, giving glory to God. And that, I tell you, is a work greater than any labor of the hands.

So pray earnestly that the Spirit would work in them as He has in you, that they too would receive the promised gift by faith and not fall into the stubborn patterns of the past. Trust that the same God who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it, and His work cannot fail.

You might feel the weakness of your own heart at times; we all do. Even the strongest faith can waver. But the Spirit who came to dwell in you is not given in response to your perfect record; He was received by faith when you first believed, and He continues with you on the same basis. So don’t try to earn what is already yours. Instead, abide in Christ, keep your eyes on Him, and let the Spirit produce the obedience that flows from genuine trust. Then your life will quietly reflect a loyalty that isn’t fragile, because it’s anchored not in your grit, but in His grace.

Father, we echo this dear one’s cry: fix our hearts so they stay true to You. Let Your Spirit teach us, correct us tenderly, and weave faithfulness into the fabric of who we are. Guard our children from a rebellious spirit, and draw them by faith into a living relationship with Jesus. We rest in Your promise that what You have begun, You will perfect.
