Isaiah 63:19 – “We are yours from of old; but you have not ruled over them, they have not been called by your name.”

Extended Explanation of the Verse:
This verse expresses a deep longing and tension within Israel’s relationship with God. The people acknowledge their identity as belonging to God “from of old,” recalling their covenant relationship established with Abraham and reaffirmed throughout their history. Yet, they feel distant from God, as though He is not ruling over them or that His name is no longer associated with their identity.
This plea reflects a yearning for restoration. The people are lamenting the loss of God’s visible rule and blessing in their lives, recognizing that they have strayed and are suffering the consequences. They long for God to once again demonstrate His authority and favor over them.

Historical Context:
Isaiah wrote these words during a time of significant struggle for Israel. The nation was facing exile or had already been taken captive by foreign powers like Babylon. The destruction of the temple and the loss of their land would have felt like God’s presence and rule were absent.
The reference to “not being called by your name” highlights the humiliation of being under foreign rule. Israel’s identity as God’s chosen people seemed obscured, and they longed for the days when His rule and their relationship with Him were evident to all nations.

Theological Implications:
This verse highlights the covenant relationship between God and His people. Despite their rebellion, Israel still appeals to their identity as belonging to God, showing a deep trust in His faithfulness even amid their failure.
It also underscores the human need for God’s rule and presence. Without God, Israel felt lost and disconnected from their purpose. This longing points to the reality that we are created to live under God’s rule and for His glory.

Literary Analysis:
The verse uses contrasting ideas to emphasize the tension between Israel’s identity and their current experience. Phrases like “we are yours from of old” juxtaposed with “you have not ruled over them” create a sense of longing and loss.
The language is deeply relational, emphasizing the connection between God and His people. The lack of God’s visible rule and the absence of His name being associated with Israel highlight the consequences of their sin and their desire for restoration.

Relevant Biblical Cross-References:
Deuteronomy 7:6: “For you are a people holy to the Lord your God. The Lord your God has chosen you out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be his people, his treasured possession.” This reflects Israel’s identity as God’s people.
Psalm 44:9-11: A lament over feeling abandoned by God, similar to the sentiment in Isaiah 63:19.
Ezekiel 36:22-23: God promises to restore His name among His people, showing His faithfulness even when they fail.
Jeremiah 14:9: “Why are you like a man taken by surprise, like a warrior powerless to save? You are among us, Lord, and we bear your name; do not forsake us!” This echoes the plea for God’s presence and rule.

What This Verse Means for Today’s Christian:
For Christians, this verse reminds us of the importance of living under God’s rule and identifying with His name. When we drift from His ways, we can feel disconnected and distant, much like Israel did. However, just as Israel appealed to their covenant relationship with God, we can trust in His faithfulness to restore us when we turn back to Him.
This verse also challenges us to examine our lives. Are we living in a way that reflects God’s rule and His name? When others see us, do they recognize that we belong to Him?

How This Verse Relates to a Loving God:
God’s love is evident even in the midst of this lament. Israel’s ability to appeal to their identity as God’s people shows that His covenant faithfulness remains intact, even when they fail. His love is not based on their performance but on His unchanging character.
This verse also reflects God’s desire for His people to live under His rule, which is for their good. When they feel distant from Him, it is not because He has abandoned them, but because He is calling them back to repentance and restoration.

How This Verse Connects to Jesus Christ:
Isaiah 63:19 points to Jesus Christ, who makes it possible for God’s people to live fully under His rule and bear His name.
Matthew 28:18-20: Jesus declares that all authority has been given to Him, and He commissions His followers to make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
John 10:14-16: Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd, gathering His people and calling them by name.
1 Peter 2:9-10: Believers are described as God’s chosen people, called out of darkness to declare His praises.
Revelation 22:4: In the new creation, God’s name will be on the foreheads of His people, signifying their eternal belonging to Him.
Through Jesus, we are brought into God’s family, where His name and rule are restored in our lives.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion:
How does this verse challenge us to reflect on our relationship with God and our identity as His child?
In what ways can we live more fully under God’s rule in our daily life?
How does knowing us bear God’s name affect the way we interact with others?
When we feel distant from God, how can we appeal to His faithfulness and covenant love, as Israel did in this verse?
How does Jesus’ work on the cross restore our identity and relationship with God?
Isaiah 63:19 is a heartfelt reminder of our need for God’s presence and rule in our lives. It challenges us to live faithfully as His people while trusting in His faithfulness to restore and redeem. Through Jesus Christ, we are assured of our place in God’s family and can live confidently as those called by His name. May this truth encourage and guide us as we seek to honor Him.

A Prayer of Acknowledgment and Surrender
Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, we recognize that the verse speaks of a time when Your chosen ones turned away, failing to acknowledge Your lordship and embracing the chaos of self-rule. We confess that we, too, have been guilty of this. There have been moments when we have sought to be our own god, to dictate the course of our life without consulting Your divine wisdom. Forgive us for our pride and our foolishness, for in attempting to lead our own life, we have neglected the sweet surrender that comes through submission to Your will.
We pray for a rekindling of our spirit when we find ourselves wavering from Your truths. When the world whispers lies, let Your voice, rooted in love and compassion, drown out the noise. May we always return to the foundation of Your Word, finding refuge in its promises and strength in its teachings.
Thank You, LORD God, for Your unending love and mercy. Thank You for calling us by name and for inviting us into a relationship with You. We submit ourselves to Your authority, ready to be guided and molded according to Your unshakeable purposes. May Your will be done in our life, as it is in heaven. In the beautiful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

The Panting Heart
Rubies Surpassed
Creation’s Groans and the Saints’ Sighs
We thank you for sharing this deep reflection on Isaiah 63:19 and we join with you in examining our hearts before the Lord. We are yours from of old, but you have not ruled over them, they have not been called by your name. This cry captures the tension you described so well, belonging to God by covenant yet feeling the distance that sin and self rule bring.

We are encouraged by how you have pointed to our identity in Christ as the answer to this longing. Jesus truly is the Bread of Heaven, the Word of Life, and the Word of God, and only in Him is that distance removed and God's rule and name restored over us. As it is written John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And Revelation 19:13 His name is called The Word of God. And John 6:35 Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. And 1 John 1:1 concerning the Word of life. When we abide in Him, we no longer live as those over whom He has not ruled, but as those who bear His name and live under His gracious authority.

We agree that this verse speaks to us today. Like Israel in Isaiah's day, we can be tempted to live as our own rulers, and then wonder why we feel dry, confused, or powerless. The remedy is not to try harder in our own strength, but to return and surrender again to His lordship, trusting His covenant faithfulness. For you are a holy people to Yahweh your God as Deuteronomy 7:6 reminds us, and in Christ we have been made that holy people not by our performance but by His mercy. 1 Peter 2:9 says But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that you may proclaim the excellence of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. And 2 Corinthians 5:17 says Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.

We also take to heart your questions for reflection. Do others see that we belong to Him, do we live under His rule daily, do we appeal to His faithfulness when we feel distant. The answer is to daily seek Him in His Word, to obey what He shows us, and to walk in repentance and humility. Romans 12:2 says Don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God. When we renew our minds in the Word, His voice drowns out the lies of the world as you prayed.

We join you now in prayer and make your prayer of acknowledgment and surrender our own.

Heavenly Father, we confess together that we have often wanted to rule our own lives and have not always lived as those called by Your name. Forgive us for our pride and for the times we have leaned on our own wisdom instead of Yours. We thank You for Your unending love and mercy, that though we wander You remain faithful to Your covenant and have provided the way back through Jesus Christ Your Son. We thank You for calling us by name and for giving us Jesus, the true Bread of Heaven and the living Word, who restores us to Your family and writes Your name upon us. Rekindle our spirits, Lord, and draw us again under Your loving rule. Help us to live in a way that reflects that we are Yours, that when others see us they see Your character and glory. Lead us, mold us, and let Your will be done in our lives as it is in heaven. We submit ourselves anew to Your authority and rest in Your grace to keep us. In the beautiful and mighty name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Thank you for sitting so carefully with this verse and putting words to what it stirs in you. We were moved by how you named that ache of belonging to God from of old and yet feeling far from his visible rule and nearness. That honest tension is one many believers know.

What stood out to us in your reflection is that Israel could still say we are yours even while feeling distant. Their identity was not built on how close God felt in the moment but on his faithful claim on them. In Christ that belonging is steadied even more. We do not have to earn being called by his name by getting everything right, and we do not lose it when life feels dry or confusing. Learning to live before the Audience of One rather than measuring ourselves by outward signs can slowly quiet the fear that we have slipped from his care.

If this longing is staying with you, it may help to bring it to God just as plainly as Israel did, in your own words, and to talk it through with a pastor or trusted believer who knows you, so the reflection stays rooted in fellowship and not only in study.

Father, we thank you that you have called us your own and that you remain faithful even when we feel distant. Draw them closer to your presence, give clarity and peace in walking under your loving rule, and remind them daily that they bear your name through Jesus. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

There is a solemn pathos in that cry of Isaiah which you have laid to heart, We are yours from of old, but you have not ruled over them, they have not been called by your name. It is the voice of a people who know they belong to God by covenant and yet feel the bitterness of having wandered from under His hand. You have rightly seen it as a word that searches the soul, for it asks every one of us whether we are indeed living under His rule and bearing His name, or whether we have sought to be our own masters.

This is where the Word probes us most deeply. No faith can be genuine but such as is perfectly consistent with repentance for past sin, and no repentance is true but that which consorts with faith. The two are inseparable graces, born together by the Spirit of God. True repentance gives God glory, it confesses that we have been wrong to live for self, and true faith looks at once to Jesus Christ alone for mercy. You cannot have one without the other, and you must not put one before the other as if repentance were a preparation you could offer to earn faith. Wherever there is real sorrow for sin, wherever there is an honest determination by God's grace to cease from sin, wherever there is a complete change of mind with regard to sin, that repentance has been produced by the Spirit of God and it is as much a gift of His grace as faith itself.

Your prayer of acknowledgment touches the very point, for you confess that we have sought to be our own god, to dictate the course of our life without consulting His divine wisdom. That is the essence of our lost estate. Man is so set on mischief, and the way of salvation is so contrary to his pride, that he will not like it unless He who ordained the plan shall change his nature and subdue his will. Yet the goodness of God is meant to lead us to repentance. All His tokens of mercy, His patience, His daily providences, His preservation of our lives, ought to melt us. He delights in mercy and His mercy endures forever. Therefore surrender to your Best Friend, surrender to your God, surrender to holiness and happiness and everlasting life. Do not say as the slothful say, I will tomorrow, for tomorrow comes and tomorrow goes and still thou art to do it. Faith is demanded now, and repentance is demanded now, for this is God's time.

To live under His rule is what you rightly call sweet surrender. Scripture calls us to unconditional surrender, to bow our wills to complete subjection. You will never be happy till self is dethroned. So long as we blame the Lord and challenge His rights, our self tortured minds will be tossed to and fro. It will be wise for you to cry, My Father, my naughty spirit has rebelled against Thee, my wicked heart has dared to question Thee, but I cease from it now, let it be even as Thou wilt, for I know that Thou doest right. That is humility and then submission to the Lord's will. We are to wrestle and to fight against sin, but side by side with that we are to yield ourselves to the Spirit's impulse, for it is He that worketh in us to will and to do of His own good pleasure.

Take comfort also that the Lord whom you seek is not far from any one of you, for in Him we live and move and have our being. When the sinner seeks God and God seeks the sinner, they will soon meet. If you this morning glance an eye to the Cross, the Lord will see your eyes looking that way. He waits to be gracious. He looks out for objects of mercy. The very fact that you can still appeal to His covenant, that you can still say we are Yours, is a token that His faithfulness has not failed. He has not cast away His people.

Look then to Jesus, the true Bread of Heaven and the living Word of God. In Him alone is salvation, and in Him alone is the restoration of that name upon us. He has all authority in heaven and earth, He calls His sheep by name as the Good Shepherd, and He writes His name upon His people. Through His precious blood, the harlot, the drunk, the thief, the self righteous, all alike may find pardon, if they come humbly to the Cross. Come needy and welcome, for God's free bounty glorifies itself in saving sinners without money and without price.

Examine yourselves then with great care, not under terror as those who tremble only in a storm and then return to sin as the dog returns to its vomit, but freely and honestly before God. Are you living in a way that reflects His rule, so that when others see you they know you are called by His name. Do you buy and sell, do you labor and rest, only as you can glorify God thereby. Will you leave tomorrow in His hands and say, keep me, guide me, hold me Lord, just for today.

May the ever blessed Spirit take away pride and self righteousness and bring you down to the pierced feet of Him who loves sinners, receives sinners and saves sinners. Turn to Him with broken heart and contrite spirit and ask Him to forgive you, and you shall see how quickly He will do it. May He establish you in that faith which clings to Christ alone and in that repentance which daily dies to sin, till faith shall be lost in sight and repentance shall die triumphing over the dead body of sin in glory.

Your honest confession before God is a good and hopeful sign, and we thank you for sharing it. The verse you brought, Isaiah 63:19, speaks with that same ache. The people say we have belonged to you from of old, yet it feels as though you do not rule over us and your name is no longer upon us. It is the cry of those who know the covenant is still true, yet feel the distance that sin and self rule have created, and who long to be visibly under God's gracious authority again.

You have named that distance rightly as pride and self rule, the desire to be your own guide without seeking divine wisdom. Scripture calls this pride unclean before God, and it grows when we do not know Him as we ought. The remedy is to know God more deeply, to remember our need, to consider our sins and how much we owe to His mercy, and so to let the proud mind be brought low. In that lowliness God looks with favor upon the meek and quiet heart that trembles at His word.

Repentance is the way back, and it has great force when we lay hold of it. By repentance we do not mean only to forsake former evil deeds, but to show forth good deeds greater than before and opposite to what was done. If self indulgence and self will have ruled, then learn to fast from your own desires and to feed on the Word. If you have looked with unchaste eyes or spoken with a careless tongue, turn to guarding eyes and lips and to speaking what is pure. Scripture says depart from evil and do good, seek peace and pursue it. That peace is not only peace with people but peace with God, which we pursue even when it seems to have gone far from us. God will bring it near again when we put away boasting and follow a sober and obedient life.

Do not fall into despair like those who repented in an evil way, but repent as David did, washing the soul with tears and turning again to God with hope. Even if you have fallen deeply, Christ can be formed in you again. The will that was like weeds can by grace become wheat, for our will is not bound by nature but has freedom to choose, and God's grace is given freely. You have received freely, so give yourself freely back to Him.

We pray for you that the Lord, who has called you by His name and made you His through Jesus Christ alone, will forgive what you have confessed, heal the wound and not only remove the dart, and teach you the sweet surrender of submission to His will. May He rekindle your spirit when the world whispers lies, cause His voice to drown out the noise, and keep you rooted in His Word. May you walk so that others see His rule in your life and know you belong to Him, and may His will be done in you as it is in heaven. In the name of Jesus we ask this. Amen.
