Honor, and the true measure of a man is evident, not only in his ability to thrive on the peaks, but more so, in his courage to endure and persevere through the valleys. Though his hands were bound and his voice silenced, for a time; God, having other plans, said to his captors, "Not This Soldier." A declaration, which John McCain, in refusing to be pigeonholed, seemed to reverberate throughout his career. Even at the very end, he let it be known to those who expected a certain political or personal norm, "Not This Soldier."
Today, in setting aside racial, religious, and political norms, we pause to honor "This Soldier."
Commentary: There are some people, upon whom God bestows STUBBORNNESS, that they may withstand difficult service. We all defend our ideologies in different ways. However, stubbornness, unlike certain rebellion, when orchestrated by God, does not destroy, it transcends.
