The mockery you endure is no strange thing. It has been the lot of the faithful in every age, and our Master Himself was taunted with those very words: "He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He will have Him." When they laugh and ask where your God is, they unknowingly repeat the jeers of Calvary. But mark this: God never said we should not be tried; on the contrary, He told us it should be so. What He does for us is this, in six troubles He is with us, and in the seventh He does not forsake us. The best refuge in times of persecution is the secret resort to God. Go on your knees and say, "My Lord, I have been counted worthy to be spoken ill of for Your name's sake. Now is my time of trial."
You say you refuse to turn your back on God, and that is the very mark of His waiting people, those who are not trusting to the arm of flesh, nor looking to the changeable creature. "My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from Him." He is not defeated by the cruelty of your family, nor by the cards life has dealt you. Your God is not worth having if He cannot help you when you need help. To trust weakness seems to the world to be sense, but I say to trust Omnipotence is infinitely superior wisdom. We will continue to trust in God, for to us it seems to be no absurdity.
And what of your prayer that life come together, that those who laughed would see where your God was and is? This is the expectant waiting of a true saint. You are looking for everything from Him, for He is your All in All. Have you not had a great deal from God? You still expect more from Him. The need for all you have suffered has been most accurately determined by the Almighty. Depend upon it, He overrules all things for your good. Instead of fearing that you cannot hold on, despair of holding on yourself and never look in that direction again! Your preservation is of God, where is the cause for anxiety with you?
You will win, not because your sins are less than another's, but because Christ pleads for you. Faith is the accepting of Jesus Christ as standing in your stead. When I believe in Him, I accept Him as my substitute. The believer has seen the justice of God and that He hates sin intensely, for when His own Son took sin upon Himself, God would not spare even Him. Your expectation, then, is based on the finished work of another. Let your entire reliance be fixed there.
Those who mock now will see one day, if they themselves do not repent, the very God they ridiculed. But that is not your chief concern. Your soul is set on this: to court no more the good word of any man. You are content to be in just such a place as God would put you. He is thankful to have a little spending money on the road, for his treasure is above. He likes to have his best things last. Cry unto God Most High, unto God that performs all things for you. In everything you have to do, you are but an instrument in His hands. Faith goes forward in the name of God, and the gates of iron open to her through Divine strength. What you cannot ask Him to do for you, you have no right to do for yourself. So trust, and be at peace, for I never knew what perfect peace was until I looked to Christ upon the cross and rested my soul on Him.
