We hear your heartfelt plea for this young person standing at a crossroads, and we join you in lifting this situation before the Lord. The tension between service and education is real, and we pray for wisdom to prevail. Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." We must seek God’s guidance above all else, for His ways are higher than ours.

We notice your prayer invokes Jesus’ name and His mighty blood covering, this is essential, for there is no other name by which we can approach the Father (Acts 4:12). Salvation and protection come only through Christ, and we stand firm in that truth. However, we must gently rebuke the desire for "mighty justice" that seems to carry a tone of vengeance. Romans 12:19 instructs, "Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, 'Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord.'" Instead, let us pray for conviction and transformation in the lives of those bound by vices, that they may taste the bitterness of sin and turn to the sweetness of God’s grace.

Regarding the young person’s choices, we pray for discernment. If joining the service is God’s calling, let Him open the doors and provide the means. But if education is the path He has set before them, let no distraction or worldly pressure pull them away. Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, "For everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven." We trust God to reveal the right timing.

We also address the concern about smoking and alcohol. These are indeed bondages that grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30). We pray that the Lord would make these substances repulsive to those who indulge, as you’ve asked, but more importantly, that their hearts would be turned toward righteousness. 1 Corinthians 10:13 assures us, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." Let us pray for deliverance, not just from the act, but from the desire.

For your time together with this young person, we pray it would be blessed and fruitful. May your words and actions point them to Christ, and may the Holy Spirit work powerfully in their life. Let Isaiah 54:17, the verse you referenced, be a reminder that "no weapon that is formed against you will prevail; and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of Yahweh’s servants, and their righteousness is of me, says Yahweh."

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts heavy for this young person and the decisions before them. Lord, we ask for Your wisdom to fill their mind and Your peace to guard their heart. Guide them in the path You have set, whether it be service or education, and let them walk in obedience to Your will. We pray for those bound by vices, may Your Holy Spirit convict them of sin and draw them to repentance. Break the chains of addiction, and let them find freedom in Christ. Protect this young person from the influence of those who would lead them astray, and surround them with godly friends who will sharpen them in faith. Bless the time they spend with Your servant praying this prayer, and use it for Your glory. Cover them with the blood of Jesus, and let Your mighty hand of protection be upon them always. It’s easy to feel pulled in many directions when a young person you love is eager to step into something big, and you’re also carrying the weight of watching friends struggle with deep habits. The ache of wanting better for them both, wisdom and timing for him, freedom and a new taste of life for them, is something we understand deeply, and we’re standing with you.

Right now, the most pressing piece may be the decision about finishing his education before enlisting. While you keep praying, there’s also room to walk alongside him with a clear, calm conversation that doesn’t push but helps him see his own path more fully. Sometimes a simple framework can give a young person space to think without feeling cornered. You might ask him to write down his goals (what he hopes to gain from service, what he values about education), then look together at what resources or support are available, like tuition assistance once he serves, or options to complete a degree later. Gently walk through alternatives: could he talk to someone who enlisted early and later finished school, then weigh what they gained and what they lost? The goal isn’t to force an answer but to help him own a well-considered plan he can commit to and revisit, knowing you’re not against him, just for his whole future. That kind of unhurried guidance often does more than a direct plea.

As for the friends caught in vices, and your boundary about smoke in your car and around you, we join your honest, gritty prayer, asking God to make what once tasted sweet turn bitter, to convict their hearts, and to keep your time together safe and honoring. You’re not expected to carry the weight of changing them; the Lord draws near to those who are stuck, often through the steady patience of someone who keeps showing up in love.

Let’s take all of this to the only One who guards and guides.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this young man’s steps to You. Give him a clear mind and a calm spirit as he considers his future. Surround him with people who will speak wisdom, and if it aligns with Your will, open a way for him to finish his education before any commitment. Protect him from haste and from pressure, and cover him in Your mighty protection. For those tangled in addiction, we ask You to spoil the taste of what harms them, to break the chains quietly and steadily, and to draw them to Your saving grace. Guard this prayer partner’s health and peace, keep smoke far from their space and let their time together be marked by safety and blessing. Use their faithful presence for Your glory, and hold them steady when the waiting feels long. In Your strong name, amen.

I perceive a soul wrestling before the Throne of Grace, laying hold upon the promise that no weapon formed against you shall prosper. This is well, for the Lord has given commandment to save, and He will deliver all those who put their trust in Him from going down into the Pit. You pray for a young man, eager to serve, yet you would have him first finish his education. There is wisdom in this ordered desire, for even our Lord tarried in Nazareth until the fullness of time. God is not the author of confusion, but of order, and He will guide in the making of right choices. Trust the Great First Cause, who works all things after the counsel of His will; even the delays that try your patience are within the fence of His Providence.

You have cried for mighty justice and mighty protection, and you have done rightly, for He has delivered us from the power of darkness and has translated us into the kingdom of His dear Son. That translation is the guarantee of every other deliverance. But remember, the deliverance from the guilt of sin and the deliverance from the power of sin are equally the work of God. Therefore, for your friends who are held by the chains of vice, there is but one hope: “Deliver him from going down to the Pit: I have found a ransom.” That ransom is not of man’s invention; it is the gift of Divine Love, Christ Jesus himself, who gave his life for many. Plead that ransom, and God may make their very sins become loathsome to them, a gracious sickness of the soul that leads to the Great Physician. I would not speak crudely of the means, but I know that when the Lord purposes to save a man from his evil company and his destructive habits, He can make the sweet morsels of temptation turn to gall in the mouth. The same power that dried up the green tree can wither the desire for every poisonous pleasure.

You pray that this young man not smoke around you or your vehicle. I see in this a desire to have your immediate atmosphere free from that which offends conscience and body. This is not a light thing. It is a prayer for sanctified fellowship, that your time together might be a blessing and not a compromise. Yet I would have you go further and cry to God that he be delivered altogether from the power of darkness, that his heart might be so renewed that he would no more need restraint than a fish needs a command to avoid the shore. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty, not license, but holy freedom from the bondage of corruption.

You ask that God use you for His glory during your times together. This is the true end of all deliverance: “I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.” If we had no troubles, we would have less to declare. Your very pleading now is a rehearsal of His righteous acts. When the Lord lifts you up from the dunghill of your own fears and the young man from his snare, then you shall go down to the gates and sing with Deborah the song of triumph. Store your mind with His knowledge. Look to your heavenly Father altogether and alone for sanctification. The Grace of God has not come merely to keep us from a few notable vices, but to deliver us from the entire realm of darkness.

Therefore, be not dismayed if the answer tarries. The trial that drives you to your knees is not independent of Divine rule, but is your education and establishment. He who fills the bitter cup fills the sweet goblet also. Wait on the Lord, and in the end you shall see that the weapon formed against you did not prosper because your righteousness was not of yourself, but of Him. The death warrant is gone out against everything that is of the creature; cling, then, to the Creator, and to Jesus Christ the Ransom. He is the Alpha and Omega of your salvation, and He will bring you through the noise of the archers to the still waters where you shall draw water with joy.
