Sermon notes 6/30/13:
I am the resurrection I am alive. I am I am
- People who don't go to church or believe in God live a life pertaining to the world.
- Godly music is satisfying and motivating.
- Those who love Jesus want to praise and rejoice in The Lord.
~ The truth that sets you free ~
- Maybe God wants to set you free of something in your life that you've been bound to for some time now.
- When was the last time God answered a very important prayer for you?
- For you, or for a friend, or family that you prayed for.
- The body of Christ is one, we pray, rejoice, shout, cry for each other.
- The Spirit of God interprets the word of who hears it according to the need of the individual.
- We don't all hear the same thing.
- Real Freedom
- What does freedom mean in your life?
- What does freedom mean to you.
- Freedom isn't wrapped up in the things we perceive, it's not palpable, it's an idea or conception.
- 1/3 of the people in Jesus' day were either in poverty or was a slave.
- When you hear the word freedom, do you think or you feel something.
- What is the first thing that comes to mind?
- Do you think "I wish I was free" "I wish I had freedom"
- Maybe it is because you're in a marriage that's troubling or job or a society that you live in.
- What in your life is causing you to not be free
- John 8: 28-36
- Jesus says that if you continue in his word "you are true disciples of mine and you will know the truth and the truth would set you free."
- What is the truth that sets you free
- Why did Jesus come?
- He came to seek and save the lost
- He came so that we can have a life in heaven more abundantly. A life that's fulfilling.
- To set the captives free.
- How many of you feel like you are captive?
- Are you spiritually free.
- You're not free until you are spiritually free.
- All of us has been captive to some areas of our life.
- You may be suffering from something in which you don't realize what the cause or problem is.
- What does it take to be free?
- What makes the individual not free?
- Are you free and if not how are you not free?
- What are the things that a captivate us?
1. Error taught and or heard.
- The confusion of error.
- Those who live by their performance.
- When you want to impress God by your performance, you can't because there is no one to compare yourself to. You will always live in a life of uncertainty and confusion.
- There is a subdued confusion until God sets you free.
- Living with uncertainty is living in captivity.
- That comes from not knowing the truth
2. Evil habits:
- People are captive to lying and deception (those are just examples of evil habits)
- They can't be honest because of the underlying fear of rejection.
- This can be telling someone you love them when you don't.
- Many people grow up with these habits so they think it's right.
3. Sexual immorality:
- There is no such thing as sexual freedom apart from God.
- People say I want to express my sexuality whichever way I please
- That's captivity
4. Alcoholics:
- They can't stop because they can't.
- They say I can stop whenever I want but if you ask them why don't you stop it's because they can't, they're addicted therefore captive.
- That is foolish captivity
- Many who drink say they are free to do it.
- They might have been free but they are no longer.
- Something is controlling you, you're not free but enslaved.
- Smoking for example is the same case.
- Is there anything in your life that has a grip of you
- That if it was to be taken away you wouldn't feel free.
- You see addicts living the most miserable and destructive of lives facing headaches and fever all the symptoms the body experience when these things are taken from it, yet they can't stray from it.
5. Laziness:
- Why are we working for those who don't want to work and pay their bills.
- They say they don't work because they can't get a job
- It's a form captivity.
6. Profanity:
- They think they come across as the strong macho man that it makes them seem stronger.
- They claim to be free
- But some can't sit down and have a decent conversation without using profanity
- And they say that's who they are
- But it's dishonoring to God
- It's a form of captivity.
~ All of these people claim to be free.
- All these habits and faults are going to prevent them from coming into heaven if they don't repent.
- When you die only your relationship with God gets you into heaven
- You're captivated with a lie that you're free
- You're not free until you're freed by having a personal relationship with God
- You may say if I have a personal relationship with God, therefore free, it means I can't drink, commit adultery, smoke, destroy myself. So that's not free
- That's the devil's lie
- That's not freedom but a bondage.
7. Emotional Bondage:
- They're difficult to identify but they're there
- Those are hard to overcome.
- Have you repented and confessed to God but still don't feel free.
- There are emotions deeply hiding until identified, that prevent us from being who God wants us to be.
- Are you free emotionally?
- Could it be you're living in slavery and not realizing it.
- Just because it's been that way doesn't mean it's supposed to be
- You can't stop whenever you please until you turn to God
- Many people have outstanding abilities and talents and skills yet are imprisoned by a spirit of fear
- I'm afraid that I'm not going to make it, or I'm afraid of what's going to happen.
- I'm afraid of what people think or say
- They're imprisoned to fear
8. False Guilt:
- Once you repent, you're free
- Don't let guilt suppress your joy and happiness
- No one can send you free aside from God.
9. Jealousy:
- There are people so jealous that they can't even think straight
- They won't admit what the problem is
10. Anxiety
- It's like fear
- It keeps you bound
- Maybe it's the way you grew up or you were treated
- If you say you grew up all your life like that doesn't mean it's the will of God
- Many kids grow with fear and anxiety and give into it.
- They'd like to be free but can't get out
- They don't know what is going on
- You don't have to perform or please God just be yourself because he loves you with all your faults.
- He sets you free
- It's nothing like similar to an emotional freedom
- Something you surpass that was bounding you and incarcerating you.
- God does not see race or color or language, he sees us all the same, because he created us.
- Anything that prevents me from being what God wants me to be is holding me captive.
- God wants you to let him be in you, what he wants to be in you.
- Some people are taught that every time they sin, they are going to hell. That's not true. God is forgiving, don't do it again.
11. Some people are bitter:
- Because the way they grew up that way in their family
- Anger, hostility, jealousy, bitterness, resentment are just as much a part of you, as let's say your arm
- Many are bitter, because of the way they grew up and were treated
- When you grow up where there are reasons to be hostile and bitter it becomes a part of you.
12. Unforgiveness:
- It's total captivity
- It drives you and holds you captive in every area of your life
- These are the things we don't see in people.
- How many feel very secure today?
- What is the basis to your security?
- Is it money, your nationality, your status, where you were born?
- None of us has any security apart from Jesus Christ
- You can't build your life on insecurities.
- Jesus is the stabilizer in our life
- He's the same today and always
- When we see things from God's point of view, we start getting free, and until we do we are not free
- No one is ultimately free to do what they choose
- We are influenced by that which is good and godly or that which wicked and bad.
- Your personal testimony are affected by all the things listed above
- It's hindering you and you became a slave to it.
- Years go by saying "one of these days" "sometime" "maybe next week" (procrastinating) then God calls and they're not ready.
- If you have any of these attitudes it's going to hinder you in some way or another
- You can't be unforgiving, bitter, jealous and be used by The Lord in any way
- You need to let go of that.
~ What is the truth that set us free?
- The truth about our salvation
- That Jesus sets us free from our past, present, and future sins if we repent and accept him as our savior
- He provides salvation and sends the Holy Spirit to seal us as a child of God, to convict us of our sins.
- It begins with the cross and is built by the power of the Holy Spirit that lives within you
- The truth about spiritual position
- Once you were separated from God. You were distant, now you're joined to him. Before you rejected him, now you accept him and he accepts you. Once you were guilty and walked in darkness, now you walk in light and you're guilt-free.
- God wants to set you free of everything and anything that hinders us and his plan for us.
- Our spiritual positions:
- 2 Peter 1: 3-4
- See that his divine power has granted to you everything pertaining to life and godliness
- We trust Jesus yet have different positions and possessions
- God has given us his nature
- We have the nature of God within us
- If I want to be free we need to claim who we are and what we have
- Walk in the way he, Jesus Christ, would walk
- It's starts with Jesus
- Hebrew 4:15-16
- Philippians 4:13
- Acts 1:8
- John 3:16
- You must CHOOSE to be free
- How do I become free by doing this?
- By responding to the things on the basis of my salvation, possession, and position, Jesus.
- You have the nature of God and the personhood of a follower of Christ
- Who I'm I on Christ Jesus
- Who I'm I in Christ
- You respond based upon truth
- The truth shall make you free
- The truth of whom he is in us
- I become free by responding in who I am according to Jesus,
my possession according to Jesus,
and my position according to Jesus.
- You would live in captivity, it's a choice you make to be free based on the truth.
- He says trust me
- The truth would set you free
- You need to want and be willingly to be free
- It's about trusting and obeying God
- If you can read and obey the previous mentioned scriptures you can be free
- Do you want to be free?
- You need to tell yourself "at this time in my life is the time to be free"
- I want freedom
- It starts with Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit in your life
- Trusting him to supply you and live within you
- When you're in captivity you feel small
- But when you're free the weight and guilt is gone, it's all gone
- Now you can please God because you want to not because of what is going to happen to you.
- Captivity is a choice
- Perceive God as your personal savior, trust in him because he promises and only he can do it
- Trust The Lord and watch him work
- You will thank God for doing what he did in your life.
- God intended for us to have a life of freedom and liberty
- Trust in Jesus as your savior
- Listen and clarify your mind, what's holding you captive and respond accordingly.
