The Lord's Prayer: A Personal Communion with The Father Taught By The Son

"All things have been handed over to Me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal Him" (Matt 11:27; Luke 10:22). "Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matt 11:28-29).

The Lord's Prayer

"Your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.
So then, this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be Your Name'" (Matt 6:7-9).

"When you pray, say, Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name" (Luke 11:2).

The fact is that Jesus as The Son of God not only has all power and wisdom, but personally knew what His Father liked to talk about most. Consider His instructions on prayer a humble invitation to participate into God The Father's concerns for His Kingdom, The Earth and His Creation. Therefore it is wise to emulate both the example and teaching of Jesus and take His instructions to heart for many reasons, not least of which the blessing He gives to those who hear His Words and put them into action (Be like a wise person who builds his house upon the rock -- Matt 7:23-24) and also, to avoid the rebuke of calling Him, "Lord, Lord" but not taking his advice -- "Why do you call Me, 'Lord, Lord,' and do not do what I say?" (Luke 6:46).

Our Father in heaven (Father, I draw near to You with confidence in His Fatherly goodness through Jesus, the Way, the Truth and The Life, No one can come to the Father except by You [John 14:6]. You are Holy, and dwell in inapproachable light, surrounded by holy angels and the spirits of righteous men made perfect [Heb 12:23], yet Your Presence cannot be contained, and reaches to me and through me by the Holy Spirit [Eph 1:22-23]).

I. These Are God's Petitions...

Hallowed be Your Name; (We pray for Your glory and reputation to increase [may we and others not use Your Name in vain, and may falsehood and lies about Your perfect character be replaced by wisdom and revelation into the true knowledge of You [Eph 1:17], Your kind and holy nature; AND may we and others see it more and more so we can image You and spread forth the knowledge of God in word and action as the waters cover the sea [Exodus, Isaiah, Habakkuk);

Your kingdom come, (May the church be nourished & cherished by the washing of the water of he Word [Eph 5:26] and spread the gospel throughout all the world as a testimony to all the nations so that the end may come [Matt 24:24]). May we experience the fruit of The Holy Spirit (Rom 14:17; Gal 5:22-23).

Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven (May we and all believers know, submit to and do Your will fully, completely, always, and constantly like the chosen angels, Jesus, and the spirits of the righteous in heaven -- May Your will come to pass in each and every situation on earth -- We Just Pray it Happens and Expect You to answer because it's Your will that Your will is accomplished [1 John 5:14-15])...

II. These Are Humanity's Needs...

Give us this day our daily bread, (We ask for Your provision: for favor, endurance, & wisdom on the job, finances, along with Your blessing, food & shelter, tithing to further the Kingdom and to show all belongs to You. Also grace us in reaching out to the homeless, remembering the poor -- We also request spiritual nourishment -- Breathe on Every Word in Scripture [Matt 4:4]; You are the Bread of Heaven [John 6]);

And forgive us our debts (May our relationship with You be improved by the confession of our sins -- help us hate them by the fear of the Lord [Prov 8:13]; turn from them and not repeat them -- sanctify us in the Truth: Your Word is Truth [John 17:17]),

As we forgive those who are indebted to us (May our relationships with others be improved by addressing areas of friction -- may we tear up the past due notices we have against each other and at the same time look out not only for our own interests, but also the interests of others [Phil 2:4]; that we would owe no one anything but to love each other [Rom 13:8; John 13:34]; May we have the attitude of Christ who took on the form of a Servant and obeyed until death on a cross [Phil 2:5-11]);

And lead us not into temptation (We ask You keep us from sinning like You kept Abimelek from sinning against Sarah [Gen 20:6]; And if we are tempted, in the midst of temptation, remind us, "no temptation has overtaken us that is not common to all humanity, and that You are faithful: You will not allow us to be tempted beyond our strength, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape, so that we may be able to endure [1 Cor 10:13]);

But deliver us from evil (Give Your angels charge over us [Ps 91:11-12]. We ask for protection over body, soul & spirit. Remember, Jesus prayed that You would not take us out of the World, but keep us from the evil one [John 17:15]).

In Jesus' Name (Power of Attorney -- The Father grants us when we are clothed with Christ and He won't deny His Name when used in Prayer [John 16:23]). Amen.

This disciple has humbled himself under the teachings of Jesus and His specific instructions to His disciples regarding prayer. I have gleaned a few things from men of faith and service throughout the centuries and have boiled it down to a few certain principles, above. This guide is by no means exhaustive. Each time I have blogged on The Lord's Prayer it has had a different form, so to confound the idea that the wisdom of Jesus is merely vain repetition. He gave this prayer pattern immediately after saying to not pray out of rote without faith your prayers are being heard so as to appease God by superfluous excess, but to pray meaningful and powerful prayers on the subjects that matter most. My prayer is that we will all derive benefit and edification in communion with the Father under the Yoke of Our Lord (Master), Husband, King, and Shepherd, Jesus Christ, The Lord's Anointed Messiah, Our Teacher, or as Mary distinguished Him as Most Excellent Teacher, Rabboni. Amen.

I believe that it is possible to speak to God about the Name of God The Righteous Father, His Kingdom and His Will for all eternity. That is why when Jesus was engaged in prayer for a long time, His disciples approached him asking, "teach us to pray" (Luke 10:1). His response was The Lord's Prayer... I am not going to get to heaven and explain to Him why I didn't have to pray in the matter he told me explicitly to pray both in the Sermon on the Mount to the whole population (Matt 6:9-13), and to the disciples at a separate time in a separate location(Luke 11:1-5) – – the law of reiteration in the Bible is heavy. There are two witnesses saying how to pray and even what to pray about... Even in The High Priestly prayer in John chapter 17 there's a resemblance to the Lord's Prayer (Clearly prays for the ability to Glorify God, For the Kingdom of God to spread through the disciples, for The Word of God to sanctify the Church, For the Disciples and the Church to be Kept from the evil one, and finally that all that every believer anywhere through all the ages would continue to know the Name of God the Righteous Father). He has ever and anon had the same priorities for this dispensation -- reach the world and disciple the Nations out of knowing who God is first -- A Father.

He did not teach us to pray in a manner separate from what he prayed. I'm going to take his advice and pray like He clearly teaches us to pray and prayed himself. Other little prayers we catch Jesus praying are, "Father, glorify Your Name" (John 12:28) and His advice to pray the Kingdom would spread, "therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest" (Matt 9:38, Luke 10:2). Kingdom of God, Come (Matt 6:10)!

Amen!

“Teach us to pray,” because for us prayer is impotence grasping at Omnipotence. It is the adoration of a being of unsurpassable glory and greatness, and yet it is talking him who has become our heavenly Father, and it is as real as talking to our own parents or to our husbands or wives, or to our children, an act of free personal communion, but the reality is that he is the personal infinite God, so holy and great, while we are so insignificant and bad.

“Teach me to pray.” Have you done that? Have you learned from Jesus what prayer is? That, “Prayer is an offering up of our desires unto God, for things agreeable to his will, in the name of Christ, with confession of our sins, and thankful acknowledgment of his mercies.”

Luke 11:1-4 “One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, ‘Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.’ He said to them, ‘When you pray, say: “Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. Forgive us our sins, for we also forgive everyone who sins against us. And lead us not into temptation.”’”

Often Jesus prayed aloud.

Let us continue to pray the our Lord's Prayer the "Our Father" in asking for our needs, peace in our lives, and around the world. God Bless us in this upcoming Joyce's Season! Amen
