The Giving Tree

The Giving Tree
By Shel Silverstein

Once there was a tree.... and she loved a little boy. And every day the boy would come and he would gather her leaves and make them into crowns and play king of the forest. He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree.... very much. And the tree was happy. But time went by. And the boy grew older. And the tree was often alone. Then one day the boy came to the tree and the tree said, "Come, Boy, come and climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and eat apples and play in my shade and be happy." "I am too big to climb and play" said the boy. "I want to buy things and have fun. I want some money?" "I'm sorry," said the tree, "but I have no money. I have only leaves and apples. Take my apples, Boy, and sell them in the city. Then you will have money and you will be happy."

And so the boy climbed up the tree and gathered her apples and carried them away. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time.... and the tree was sad. And then one day the boy came back and the tree shook with joy and she said, "Come, Boy, climb up my trunk and swing from my branches and be happy." "I am too busy to climb trees," said the boy. "I want a house to keep me warm," he said. "I want a wife and I want children, and so I need a house. Can you give me a house ?" " I have no house," said the tree. "The forest is my house, but you may cut off my branches and build a house. Then you will be happy." And so the boy cut off her branches and carried them away to build his house. And the tree was happy. But the boy stayed away for a long time. And when he came back, the tree was so happy she could hardly speak. "Come, Boy," she whispered, "come and play." "I am too old and sad to play," said the boy. "I want a boat that will take me far away from here. Can you give me a boat?" "Cut down my trunk and make a boat," said the tree. "Then you can sail away... and be happy." And so the boy cut down her trunk and made a boat and sailed away. And the tree was happy ... but not really.

And after a long time the boy came back again. "I am sorry, Boy," said the tree," but I have nothing left to give you - My apples are gone." "My teeth are too weak for apples," said the boy. "My branches are gone," said the tree. “You cannot swing on them - " "I am too old to swing on branches," said the boy. "My trunk is gone, “said the tree.” You cannot climb - " "I am too tired to climb" said the boy. "I am sorry," sighed the tree. "I wish that I could give you something.... but I have nothing left. I am just an old stump. I am sorry...." "I don't need very much now," said the boy. "Just a quiet place to sit and rest; I am very tired." "Well," said the tree, straightening herself up as much as she could, "well, an old stump is good for sitting and resting Come, Boy, sit down. Sit down and rest." And the boy did. And the tree was happy. The End!

*Some people are givers and some people are takers. Givers need to set limits because takers don’t have any or they rarely do. Words mean nothing when our actions contradict. Our actions speak the truth.

To me The tree was the source of life for the boy as Lord Jesus Christ for us. He wants to see us happy, When we walk away from him, he is not happy still he comfort and bless us by His grace when we come back to him. It's worth to have faith by obeying His command. Lord Jesus said that 'it's more blessed to give than to receive'. (Act 20:35),, God's love is unlimited when we give or act with faith for His Kingdom His blessings may not be financially or materially but he blesses us with spiritual blessings which the world cannot gives us. So we rejoice in the Lord.

Thank You for your reply. A young man that I know is in re-hap. I went with his mother to see to him. One of the social workers read this to all of us. They were trying to help the mothers and fathers of these children see that they are enabling their children. Because they gave everything to their children they could not live out their full potential.
1) They are not God and they should not play God.
2) They had apples that so many others could of eaten and been blessed.
3) Self care. You have to take care of yourself to survive. If you don't you can't help yourself or anyone else.

But I also like the way that you see it.

Thank you. When I met Jesus, through grieve losing my daughter, now it's more than 25 years God leads me to help or comfort sick people through the Gospel. Some say this is Ministry of Mercy what I have been doing. Beside tithes, offerings I spent for children education and my transportation to visit patients., bring them home. I can't give them money but I help in action. I am a poor lady financially but I never regret helping them as because many got saved before they died. It's blessing that I never ever expect back from them, its so correct It's more blessed to give than receive
Of course for our children we need limitation, as God leads us to be. But it's difficult though. We need to teach, them since childhood, many are needing us beside them. Sorry so long written.

No this was not long enough. I really enjoyed reading how God is using you. Thank You for sharing. This truly blessed me.

The boy is a young person that for most of the story has not learned the value of relationships over activities or possessions. He later in life knows that the relationship is worth more than anything else.

The tree is a true mother that just gives and gives and gives like an amazing grandmother, a true picture of unconditional love without boundaries, limits ore expectation of repayment or reward...

I would like there to be another chapter where a sapling springs up so that he had some shade like Jonah and that it would grow and he had kids and they could come live under it's branches and buy some lumber this time. The tree would be happy again from the children playing and climbing the tree again.

I kept thinking the tree was going to grow more and more. In truth, the boy never left the tree and always had a part of the tree with him. A single tree can bless us with all we need in life and if we cut it down to build our house, the tree can grow back into it's glory and the tree can live in the walls, floors, roof and ceilings of our house. I have meditated on all things came forth from Jesus and all things return unto Him. Pick anything, even a car, the wisdom and the materials all came forth from God and the ground and they will return unto the ground yet we wonder where is our God and yet He is all around us standing above and below, in front and behind, on every side. We see Him in part because everything is a part of Him and everything has it's purpose for Him. We don't recognize Him because we don't look for Him in the pages of His Word and yet no matter where we go, behold there He is! The tree is one with the Earth and sees the boy everywhere he goes. How else could the trees be jealous in the pages of God's Holy Word if the trees aren't one with Him? We see in part and we know in part yet one day we will know and see in full. Thank You Lord Jesus for Your Word! Glory to You Lord Jesus! I am amazed by You Lord Jesus and I Love You Lord Jesus!

Thank you for sharing this Linda! It is amazing that stories never truly end as we can add so much to one story especially when we try to look at them through God's Wisdom :)

Brother James thank you for sharing your point of view. The boy never left the tree and he always had a part of the tree with him.

Worse than giving to be seen is giving only because you want something in return. For such giving is rooted in selfish greed. GREED IS IDOLATRY Giving must first be simply because God commands it. After all, all things are freely given of Him. Indeed, we would have nothing to give had not God...

I'm giving up on prayer and church. I still believe in Christ as my savior, but the rest of me is too old, too tired, and too far gone. You can not convince how pointless everything in life is. If God listens to you then ask him to speak to me. It's pointless of course. He'll say no, but perhaps...
