The gift of prophetic vision

We join you in this deep hunger for God to open the eyes of your spirit and we thank Him for placing this desire in your heart. It is a good and biblical desire to want to see as God sees and to hear His voice more clearly, but we want to encourage you to seek the Giver even more than the gift.

Scripture tells us to earnestly desire spiritual gifts, but especially that we may prophesy, for the one who prophesies edifies the church, 1 Corinthians 14:1. And God has promised, It will be in the last days, says God, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and your daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions. Your old men will dream dreams, Acts 2:17. We also pray as Paul prayed that having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope of his calling, and what are the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, Ephesians 1:18. This is the true prophetic vision we most need, to know Christ and His hope and His glory more clearly.

We also want to gently remind you that we only have access to the Father through Jesus Christ. Your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus, and we cannot come to God except through Him. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, confessing Him as Lord, so that your spirit is made alive in Him and you can truly see spiritually. It is the Holy Spirit who opens our eyes, and He comes to dwell in those who belong to Jesus.

We also encourage you with humility and wisdom in seeking prophetic vision. The Spirit distributes gifts as He desires, But the one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires, 1 Corinthians 12:11. We can ask, we can desire, but we must surrender to His sovereign will and timing and not demand a gift for our own curiosity or status. True prophecy always agrees with Scripture and exalts Christ, and it is given to build up others in love, not to elevate ourselves. We are warned, Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world, 1 John 4:1. Any vision or impression must be tested against the Word of God, confirmed in prayer, and submitted to mature believers for discernment. We must never seek visions apart from the Word, through empty techniques, or for selfish gain. Instead we seek a holy life, abiding in the Word, in prayer, in fellowship and in obedience, and God reveals what we need when we need it.

If you lack wisdom in discerning what God is showing you, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him, James 1:5.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You only through the name and the blood of Jesus Christ, Your Son. We thank You for this dear one who hungers to see with spiritual eyes. We ask that You first draw them into deeper intimacy with Jesus, that they would know Him more and love Him more. Wash them in the blood of Jesus and fill them anew with Your Holy Spirit. If it is Your will, we ask You to impart and stir up the gift of prophetic vision for the edification of Your church and for Your glory, not for pride or curiosity. Open the eyes of their heart as in Ephesians 1:18, give them eyes to see and ears to hear what Your Spirit is saying. Grant them purity of heart, for the pure in heart shall see God, and keep them humble, grounded in Your Word, and protected from all deception and false visions. Teach them to test every spirit, to hold fast to what is good, and to speak only what You give them in love and truth. Let any vision they receive lead to repentance, encouragement, comfort and obedience to You. We ask for increased discernment, wisdom and accountability through godly believers around them. Let them seek Your face more than Your hand, and let Your will be done in their life. We ask all this in the mighty and only saving name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We encourage you to continue to abide daily in Scripture, to pray in the Spirit, to walk in holiness and love, and to serve faithfully in your local church where prophecy can be practiced in order and with discernment. As you are faithful in the little things and faithful to love and edify others, God will entrust you with more as He sees fit. Keep your eyes on Jesus, and He will open your eyes to see as He sees.

We hear the hunger in your request to see more clearly with the eyes of your spirit, and to be close to the Lord in a way that helps others. We thank you for sharing that with us.

One thing we have found helpful is to think of this kind of growth as training more than trying. Like preparing for a long race, it is the small, steady faithfulness over time that forms us, staying with the Lord in prayer, spending time in Scripture, staying in fellowship, keeping a tender heart toward repentance and forgiveness. The motive of our heart in those simple practices matters more than doing them perfectly.

We have also learned that character matters more than any one gift. Love, joy, peace, patience and the other fruit of the Spirit are the truer measure of maturity, and gifts are given as God chooses, not all in the same way to everyone. When we sense something we wonder might be from the Lord, humility and community are a protection. Bringing it quietly to a mature pastor or mentor who knows you, weighing it against God's character, and being willing to be corrected helps keep us centered on Him.

For this season you might choose one steady rhythm, like unhurried time in prayer and Scripture a few times a week, and invite one trusted leader to walk with you as you learn to listen and to test what you hear.

Father, in Jesus' name we ask You to draw our friend nearer to Yourself, to give humility and wisdom, to deepen love for You and for others, and to lead step by step according to Your will. Form Christ's likeness in them and make Your way clear as they seek You. Amen.

Your desire that God would open the eyes of your spirit is a prayer which Scripture itself teaches us to pray, for the natural eyes are blind to heavenly things and God alone can open the eyes of men.

It is an act of creation when the Lord gives sight to the blind soul. We may lead one another to the well, but we cannot make the eyes to see it. You remember Hagar in the wilderness, perishing for thirst though a well was close at hand, until God opened her eyes and she saw the water. So many have heard the gospel a thousand times and not understood it, until the whole power of Omnipotence bears upon the intellect and the heart. Faith is to a man like new eyes, eyes with a far wider range than natural eyes ever have, eyes which see the truths of God and which, as age increases, grow yet more bright and farseeing. This faith is itself the gift of God, for holy works and holy sight are not of our merit but of His free grace.

Therefore I would turn your prayer away from a curiosity after hidden things to the one true and blessed vision. There have always been pretenders to prophetic knowledge who fix dates and foretell the end, and by their fanaticism have disturbed the peace of saints. Our Lord would have us look right on, with eyelids straight before us, walking resolutely in the way of obedience and seeking souls, rather than gazing after speculations. The vision most to be desired is this, that your eyes shall see the King in His beauty. Heaven will be a place of many surprises, but the sight of our glorified King will astonish us forever, and that sight begins by faith here below.

So let us pray that the Holy Spirit will open your eyes first to see Christ Himself, who is the unspeakable gift of the Father's love. To see Him as your righteousness, your peace, your well of living water in the wilderness, your risen and ascended Lord at the right hand of God, this is prophetic in the truest sense, for it beholds what God has revealed and trusts what God has promised. May He give you grace to turn your eyes by faith to the Lamb of God who died for sinners upon the cross, and to behold the land that is very far off with a good hope through grace and everlasting consolation. Thanks be unto God for His unspeakable gift, and may that gift be yours in ever fuller sight until faith becomes sight and you see Him as He is.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, who alone is the way of salvation and the true light that enlightens every person, we ask You to open the eyes of this heart. Give spiritual understanding, love for Your Word, and discernment to know Your will. Remove whatever clouds vision, and grant clarity to see Christ more fully, to understand the Scriptures, and to walk in holiness and love. Let any gift You give be used with humility, for the building up of others and for Your glory, not for boasting. Fill this life with the Holy Spirit, with wisdom and quiet confidence in Your truth, and keep it rooted in Your Word and in the fellowship of Your people. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
