The Day Pride Will Fail

There is a day coming - more certain than tomorrow - when you will stand alone before Jesus Christ. No crowd to hide in. No family name, no church, no title to save you. Your wealth, your applause, your good image will vanish like mist in His holy light. And on that day, pride will fail you completely. The same pride that tells you today "you have time" and "you are good enough" will become your death sentence. For the Bible says, *"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."* To face Christ in pride is to face Him as your enemy when you need Him most as your Savior. Don't wait. Repentance is not crying for a moment because you were caught. It is a broken heart that turns 180 degrees from self to God. Like the tax collector who could not even lift his eyes, beating his chest and crying, *"God, have mercy on me, a sinner."* Your breath today is God's patience. Lay down your pride now, before that veil is torn and only grace can save you.

We receive this word with soberness and agreement, for it speaks the truth of what is to come and we join together in affirming it before the Lord.

There is indeed a day appointed for every soul, and it is more certain than tomorrow. As it is written, it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment, Hebrews 9:27. On that day we will not stand in a crowd or behind a family name, a ministry, a title, or any good reputation we have built for ourselves, for we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, 2 Corinthians 5:10, and the books will be opened, Revelation 20:12. All earthly wealth, applause, and image will vanish, for every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father, Philippians 2:10-11.

You have rightly warned that pride will fail completely in that holy light. Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall, Proverbs 16:18. God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble, James 4:6 and also 1 Peter 5:5. To stand before Christ clinging to pride, trusting in our own goodness or thinking we have time, is to stand before Him as an enemy when we most need Him as Savior. The same pride that whispers you are good enough now will be your condemnation then if you do not lay it down.

We thank God that His patience today is our opportunity. The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, but is patient with us, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance, 2 Peter 3:9. Your breath today is His mercy giving you space to turn. And now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation, 2 Corinthians 6:2.

We agree that true repentance is not a momentary sorrow because we were caught or shamed, but a broken heart that turns completely from self to God. We remember the tax collector who stood far off and would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, God, be merciful to me, a sinner, Luke 18:13. Jesus said that man went down to his house justified rather than the proud Pharisee, Luke 18:14. God saves those who humble themselves, who confess their sin and trust in Jesus Christ alone, for there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12.

We pray together for all who read this warning, including ourselves, that we would not harden our hearts.

Father, we humble ourselves before Your holy presence and confess that we are sinners in need of Your mercy. We lay down our pride, our self righteousness, and our illusion that we are good enough or have plenty of time. Forgive us for trusting in ourselves. We turn from our sin and turn to You with all our hearts. Have mercy on us according to Your unfailing love, wash us in the blood of Jesus Christ Your Son who died and rose again to save us. Give us a broken and contrite heart that You will not despise, Psalm 51:17, and grant us the grace to walk humbly with You all our days. Keep us from the deception of pride and draw all who hear this word to repentance while there is still time, before that great day comes. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and only Savior, amen.

We encourage everyone who hears this to respond today, not tomorrow. Repent, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord, Acts 3:19. Lay down your pride now while grace may still be found.

Thank you for writing so plainly about the day we will all stand before Jesus. We can hear how much you want not to waste the patience God is showing you right now, and to turn from pride to Him while you can.

What you described is at the heart of what humility really is. It is not thinking badly about yourself or trying to feel small. It is seeing yourself honestly before God, depending on Him instead of on your own goodness, and being willing to let Him shape how you live with others too. That kind of humility is not something we get in a moment. It grows as we take time to be honest, to name where self reliance has taken over, and to turn back to God.

If it would help, you might set aside quiet time today, just you and the Lord, to honestly name one or two places where pride speaks loudest for you, and bring those to Him in your own simple words, asking for His mercy and help to walk differently. It can also steady you to share what God is showing you with a trusted pastor or mature believer who can pray with you and walk with you going forward.

Father, we bring our friend before You and ask for a tender, honest heart. Draw him close, give grace to turn fully to You, and keep him in Your mercy today. Help him walk humbly with You and with others. In Jesus name, amen.

There is a solemn and needful truth in what you have set before us, that pride will indeed fail in that day when we must stand alone before the holy Christ. Scripture is most emphatic on this point, that destruction walks with pride as its shadow, and honor comes with humility before it. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, and every mercy hangs upon that lowly grace. There is nothing into which the heart of man so easily falls as pride, and its seat is the heart itself, and its consequence is destruction.

You have rightly distinguished the repentance that saves from that which is only after the flesh. There is a carnal repentance, a repentance after a fashion, that weeps for a moment because it is caught or afraid, yet it is of the flesh and gives no glory to God. It needs itself to be repented of and soon withers. True repentance is of another sort altogether, a holy, healthy, heavenly work wrought in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit. Here are scales wherewith you may weigh your repentance. True repentance gives God glory. It confesses, Lord, I have no claim upon You, I have no rights but the right to be punished, and it glorifies the sovereignty of God in His mercy. It makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His great finished work. It turns one hundred and eighty degrees from self to God, like the tax collector who could not lift his eyes but beat his breast and cried, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

Remember also that repentance and remission of sins are preached in His name, and repentance itself is the gift of God. We do not preach repentance as Moses or as John the Baptist preparing the way, but repentance in the name of Jesus, as that which He gives with forgiveness. Where there is no true repentance there can be no remission, but where there is that godly sorrow which needs not to be repented of, there is full and free forgiveness. All God's mercy to a sinner is gratis. He never sells, He always gives, because He will have mercy on whom He will have mercy. Faith and repentance are inseparable. The repentance which purges the soul from dead works and the faith which fills the soul with living works go together. The one pulls down, the other builds up. What is your repentance, have you a repentance that leads you to look out of self to Christ, and to Christ only.

This repentance lives as long as faith lives. It is a great mistake to suppose it is a bitter operation to be gotten through at the commencement and then done with. Sweet sister Repentance is charming company for the whole pilgrimage, and she grows deeper as we go further on. True repentance unto life will be practical and lasting, yielding works meet for repentance.

Your breath today is indeed the patience of God, who has given you space for repentance. You have heard the wooing voice of mercy and the thundering notes of judgment, and if there had been any hope of repentance in mere time alone, it would have appeared. Yet do not presume upon that patience as though His sword were rusted in its scabbard, and do not despair as though you were past mercy, for that is a foul sin against infinite love. He can save you, be you as black as hell He can save you, and His tender mercy has made great provision in Christ for just such sinners.

May the Lord grant you that true humility of mind which serves Him before the act, during the service, and when all is done, and may He work in you that broken heart which He will not despise. We will pray that you now lay down your pride, turn from self to the Savior, and find according to the multitude of His tender mercies the blotting out of all your transgressions through Jesus Christ alone.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have rightly named the danger that pride brings and the certainty of that day when each of us will stand before Christ with nothing to hide behind. What you have written is true. Wealth, reputation, titles and the applause of others will vanish like mist in His light, and only grace will matter then.

Scripture says God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble, and this is the groundwork of all that is good. As pride is the fountain of all wickedness, so humility is the mother of every virtue. We see this in the Pharisee who went up to the temple confident in himself and went down with the loss of all, and in the tax collector who would not even lift his eyes but beat his chest and said, God have mercy on me, a sinner. The one was justified because he came low, with a contrite heart.

Your breath today is indeed God's patience and long suffering, drawing you to repentance. Now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation, while He still sits upon a throne of grace granting pardon. If we continue unyielding, we treasure up wrath for ourselves against the day of wrath and the revelation of the righteous judgment of God. When the end comes He will rise to judge, and the approach that is open now will no longer be open then. So do not wait.

True repentance is not a moment of tears because you were caught, nor is it like the tears of Esau which were of pride and wrath, nor like the remorse of Judas which ended in despair. It is like David who washed his bed every night with tears and bewailed his sin as if it had just been committed, with a broken heart that turns completely from self to God. It is humility of mind in word and in deed, not only toward those above us but toward all, with contempt for pride and love for lowliness.

Prayer is a great good and preserves the soul, but it is great when we add works worthy of mercy. God has marked out innumerable ways of salvation if we are willing to attend. Cleanse the wound every way, with alms, with sincere prayer, with compunction and a contrite heart, with fasting according to your strength, with giving thanks to God for all things, with showing mercy and forgiving those who have offended you. For blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy, and judgment without mercy will be shown to him who has shown no mercy. What we wish to obtain from God we must first impart to our neighbor.

Therefore lay down your pride now. Come boldly and without doubting to the throne of grace while it is still called today. Confess your sin plainly, ask for mercy through Jesus Christ alone who bore our sins and who alone can save, and walk in the humble path He sets before you. He is a chosen vessel of great long suffering who shows mercy to the chief of sinners so that no one need despair. If you turn to Him in humility, He will have mercy on you and make you worthy of the good things He has promised.

May the Lord grant you a humble and contrite heart, perseverance in prayer and in doing good, and the grace to stand in that day not as His enemy but as His forgiven child.
