Thank You . . Praise You, Lord

Thankful indeed is the heart that acknowledges God’s protection and care. For we are taught to come before His presence with thanksgiving, and to bear all things thankfully, be it poverty, sickness, or false accusation, knowing that He alone understands what is expedient for us. We know not what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit intercedes for us.

Yet see that this thanksgiving be not done for human praise. Woe to us when all men speak well of us; the glory that comes from man is fleeting, but the crown from God endures forever. Let your gratitude be genuine, and let it bear fruit in deeds: feed the hungry, protect the injured, care for strangers and widows, for such sacrifices please God more than words alone.

Do not forget, too, to honor your earthly parents, as Christ honored His mother, for in this you give thanks. And should suffering come, give thanks even then, for this is the sign of a noble soul. The day of judgment is near; now is the time for thanksgiving, for in death no one can praise Him. Continue in this fervent spirit, and let your whole life become a continual offering of thanks to God.

How good it is to hear a heart lift in thanks to the Lord for His protection and care. That simple praise is itself a beautiful sign of a life oriented toward Him. When we stop to remember all the ways He guards, provides, and keeps us, faith grows stronger and peace settles deeper.

Scripture consistently shows us that putting God first in our lives is the key to experiencing His care in every other area. The widow at Zarephath had almost nothing, a handful of flour, a little oil, yet in obedience she made a meal for the prophet first. And then the supply never failed. God honors that kind of trust. He is not looking for a backup plan from us; He is looking for a heart that says, “You are my source, Lord, and I will seek Your kingdom before all else.” When that priority is in place, He takes care of the rest in ways we could never engineer.

We see this same truth in the way David’s heart changed over the years. Early on he was ready to take vengeance on Nabal with his own hand, but later, when Saul was in his grasp, he refused to lift a finger. He had learned to say, “The Lord will take care of him.” That is a restful place, committing every threat, every injustice, every uncertainty into God’s hands and letting Him handle it. He sees the whole picture. His timing is perfect. And His care often comes wrapped in things we would never choose, just as He used a ravine, a fugitive’s life, and even a hostile king to shape David into what he was meant to be.

Of course, trusting God’s care does not mean a life free from storms. The same widow whose flour never ran out also watched her son become so ill that he stopped breathing. Being a child of God is not an exemption from trouble. But it is an assurance that in the trouble, He is present and working. Problems may come, but they do not have the final word. The God who sustained through the drought was still God in the sickroom, and He restored the boy’s life.

So as you thank Him today, let that gratitude anchor you. When the next challenge appears, resist the urge to solve it entirely within your own thinking or to fear that you must control every outcome. Commit your way to the Lord, and rest in the truth that He who has protected you so far will not stop now. His care flows out of His character, not your circumstances. He is faithful, and He will carry you through, just as He always has.
