We hear your cry for help and are deeply moved by your struggle. First, let us affirm that yes, today is indeed Good Friday—a day when we remember the sacrificial death of our Lord Jesus Christ on the cross for the sins of the world. And yes, Easter Sunday is this weekend, when we celebrate His glorious resurrection, the victory over sin and death that gives us hope for new life in Him. It is only by the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father, and it is through His blood that we are forgiven and set free. "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all" (1 Timothy 2:5-6 WEB).
Your gratitude for Jesus’ intervention today is a sign of His mercy toward you, but we must also address the sin that is entangling you. The Bible is clear that drunkenness and the use of mind-altering substances are not part of God’s design for His children. "Don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20 WEB). The hangover, the bloodshot eyes, and the struggle to function are all consequences of choices that dishonor God and harm your body, which is meant to be a vessel for His glory.
We must also rebuke the deception that led you to believe you could "pretend" to go to work while still under the influence of sin. The enemy would love nothing more than to keep you in this cycle of bondage, but Jesus came to set you free. "The thief only comes to steal, kill, and destroy. I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly" (John 10:10 WEB). Your job, your wife, your family, and your home are all blessings from God, but they are not guaranteed if you continue to walk in disobedience. The Lord disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6), and it is out of love that we urge you to turn away from these sins before they destroy what God has given you.
We also notice that while you thank Jesus, there is no mention of repentance—a turning away from sin and toward God. True forgiveness requires not just sorrow for the consequences of sin, but a heart that is willing to change. "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9 WEB). The fact that you are asking for help is a good sign, but help will only come when you surrender fully to Christ and allow Him to break the chains of addiction in your life.
Let us pray for you now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts for our brother who is struggling. Lord, we thank You for Your mercy that spared him from going to work today in a state of unfitness, but we know this is not the life You have called him to. We ask that You break the power of addiction in his life—whether it be alcohol, drugs, or any other stronghold that is keeping him from walking in freedom. Lord, Your Word says that "if the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36 WEB), and we claim that freedom for him now. Give him the strength to resist temptation and the wisdom to seek godly help. Surround him with believers who can support him in his walk with You.
Father, we also pray for his marriage and his family. Protect them from the effects of his sin, and soften his wife’s heart to forgive as You have forgiven. Help him to be the husband and father You have called him to be, leading his family in righteousness and love. Lord, we ask that You restore what has been broken and heal what has been wounded. Give him a fresh revelation of Your grace and a deep desire to live for You.
We rebuke the spirit of addiction in Jesus’ name and command it to leave him. We declare that he is no longer a slave to sin but a child of God, called to live in holiness. Strengthen him, Lord, and help him to take the next step—whether it be confessing to his wife, seeking accountability, or entering a program to break free from these habits. We trust You to complete the good work You have begun in him.
In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Redeemer, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to take action today. Confess your struggles to your wife and seek her forgiveness. Find a biblical, Christ-centered recovery program or support group where you can walk in accountability with other believers. The road to freedom begins with a single step, and that step is surrendering your life fully to Jesus. "Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded" (James 4:8 WEB). You are not alone in this battle—God is with you, and so are we. Keep pressing into Him, and He will lead you into victory.
