Your thanksgiving has refreshed my heart, for you have set your words to the right tune when you praise Him whose joy is indeed a heavenly medicine and a spiritual muscle to the soul.

You have well quoted the Psalmist, O God, my heart is fixed, I will sing and give praise, even with my glory. There you touch the very quintessence of happiness. True joy is not found upon the barn floor nor in the wine vat, for those may be bare and dry, but it is the fruit of the Spirit from the root of trust in God. Faith does create joy, and as far as faith goes, there is joy. A fixed heart does not sing because circumstances are fair, but because God is unchanging. There is no monotony in such joy. In the presence of mere mirth one grows dull, but in living joy there is exhilaration, and he who has learned to rejoice in the Lord can rejoice always, as the apostle says, I will say it again, Rejoice.

You speak also of thoughts, and there you are wise to pray that every thought may be taken captive. Our thoughts are not as His thoughts, for as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than our ways. Yet how precious also are His thoughts unto us, O God, how great is the sum of them. They are constant, kind, wise, tender and gracious thoughts of love toward us from everlasting. When we awake, we are still with Him, and to meditate upon His thoughts is to be brought near to Him. Let us then cultivate thankful thoughts and abundant believing thoughts, for the fruit of thankful thoughts will be summer in the soul even when it is the depth of winter outside. And when vain imaginings would steal our joy, let us turn again to the precious thoughts of God.

This steadfast heart finds its perfect pattern in our Lord Jesus Christ. He was fixed in His purpose to do His Father's will, saying, Not my will, but Yours be done, and He went even to death for our salvation. There is salvation in no other, for He alone bore our sins and slept in the prison house of the tomb that we, the captives, might go free. To look to Him, to trust in His precious blood and triumphant resurrection, is to find a well spring of joy which will not run dry. He that has Christ has enough to make his heart ring with joy, though he have nothing else besides.

So I join my prayer with yours for that word in Philippians.

We join you in giving thanks to the Father for His unchanging goodness, for the Bread of Heaven who is the Word of Life, Jesus Christ, through whom alone we have salvation and access to God.

You have rightly heard Psalm 108:1. David says, O God, my heart is fixed, I will sing and give praise. This is not a feeling that comes when all is easy, but a deliberate setting of the heart upon God. As you noted, worship does not depend on outward conditions but on the faithful character of God. When the heart is steadfast in faith, it can stand even when winds blow hard against it, for it is not the wind that overthrows us but the weakening of faith. When faith is steadfast, the storm cannot sink us because Christ holds us.

You also prayed from Philippians 4:4, Rejoice in the Lord always. This joy is not the fleeting joy of this world. It is not found in comfort or success, but in belonging to Christ. It is the joy of heaven, a settled gladness that becomes strength for trust and love. In the same way, the peace of God is fixed and steadfast. If our peace rests on people or circumstances it quickly dissolves, but if it rests on God who made peace with us through the one sacrifice of His Son, it remains and it can rule in our hearts as an umpire when anger, fear, or doubt wrestle within us.
