taller

We join you in bringing this desire before the Lord and we understand how much basketball means to you and how you want to use your abilities well. We know that height can feel very important in that sport, and it is good that you are bringing your request to God who lovingly formed you.

We are reminded of what Scripture says about how God has made each of us. Psalm 139:14 says I will give thanks to you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. My soul knows that very well. And 1 Samuel 16:7 says But Yahweh said to Samuel, Don't look on his face, or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for I don't see as man sees. For man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart. Your value and your ability to glorify God are not measured by inches, but by your heart toward Him and how you steward what He has given you. We also take comfort in Philippians 4:11 where Paul says Not that I speak because of lack, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content in it, and in Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me. That strength includes growing in skill, character, discipline, and faith whether or not we grow taller.

We encourage you to honor God with your body and your effort as you pursue basketball. 1 Corinthians 10:31 says Whether therefore you eat, or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. And Colossians 3:23 says Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. This means caring for your body as His temple through good sleep, nourishing food, faithful training, and rest, while trusting Him with the outcome of your growth, which is ultimately in His hands. We encourage you to pray not only for height but for diligence, humility, teamwork, and to use the court as a place to show Christlike character.

We notice your prayer closed with Amen but did not mention Jesus, and we want to gently share why His name matters so much to us. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we have access to God and can bring our requests to Him with confidence. If you have not yet put your trust in Him, we encourage you to do so today, believing on Him as Lord and Savior.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we thank You for this young person You have fearfully and wonderfully made. We thank You for the desire for basketball and for the gifts You have already placed within. We ask in the name of Jesus that You would grant growth and health according to Your perfect will, and that You would help our friend to grow in strength, skill, discipline, and godly character. Help him to be content in You while working heartily for You on and off the court, and to delight himself in You above all. Draw him closer to Jesus and let his life and his play bring glory to Your name. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our hope and our access to You. Amen.

We hear how much basketball means to you, and it makes sense you would bring this desire to God. Wanting to be taller to help your game is a very natural hope to have.

We want to encourage you that your worth and your identity are not measured in inches or in playing time. God made you as you are, and He cares most about your character, your faithfulness, and how you love and serve others on and off the court. Confidence often grows as we faithfully develop what we have been given, rather than from wishing we were different.

A practical step that may help is to talk with a trusted coach about the parts of the game you can keep strengthening right now, like footwork, shooting, ball handling, and being a steady teammate. Working hard at those skills is a good way to steward what God has given you, and coaches can help you see strengths you might be overlooking.

Father, we lift this desire to You. You see his love for basketball and his hope to grow. Help him to know he is valued and loved by You just as he is, to use his gifts with joy and diligence, and to trust Your good plan for his body and his future. Give him encouragement each time he steps on the court. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your prayer asking the Lord for greater stature for basketball has been heard and we have brought it before the throne of grace.

He who formed you in the womb and ordained all your days knows your frame altogether, and not a hair falls without His knowledge. It is right to bring even such desires to Him in simple faith, for He is a Father who hears the cries of His children, yet we must ask always with submission to His wiser will.

Remember that a man's contentment is in his mind, not in the extent of his possessions or the measure of his stature. Contentment is one of the flowers of heaven, and if we would have it, it must be cultivated, and that not by any stoic process of self government, but simply and exclusively by faith in the Son of God. Alexander with all the world at his feet cried for another world to conquer, to show that enlargement of our condition does not of itself give peace. Whether taller or shorter, strong or slight, your peace will be found in trusting the Lord's wise appointment for you.

Therefore we would have you set Caution and Self examination at the helm even in this desire. Search your heart before God as to your motive, that you may not act for self exaltation but with the distinct desire to honor the Lord. If we would serve God acceptably we must forget self. The body is the Lord's, to be kept in health and discipline and used for His glory, not for vainglory.

We pray for you now, that the Lord would give you grace to be content with such things as you have, and to grow in faith toward Jesus Christ, in whom alone is our acceptance. We ask that He would prosper you in health and strength, make you diligent in what He has given you to do, and teach you to use whatever stature and gifts you have with thankfulness and humility. If it be His good pleasure to add to your height, we thank Him, and if He appoints otherwise, we pray He will make you tall in faith, in character and in usefulness in His kingdom, which is of far greater worth. May you seek first His kingdom and learn that His grace is sufficient for every court and every calling.

We commend you to His fatherly care, trusting that He will do what is best, and that whether on the court or off it you may live to show forth His praise.
