The College Student
Early impressions shape lasting character and demand we guard our hearts from corrupting influences.
We hear your heart and we join with you in bringing these students before the Lord, for we know how wearying it can be to love sweet children who are also defiant and refuse to listen the first time. We understand the exhaustion of repeating instructions, watching a child rock in his chair and fall and still continue, seeing things dropped and not picked up, hearing noises that distract the whole class, and carrying the burden when a child is not truthful with his parents about what happens at school.

God's Word speaks clearly about these behaviors because He loves children and desires them to walk in truth and respect. Children are called to obedience and honor, for it is right and pleasing to the Lord. Ephesians 6:1 says Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right, and Colossians 3:20 says Children, obey your parents in all things, for this pleases the Lord. That principle extends to teachers and all rightful authority, for Romans 13:1 teaches that there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. When a child talks to get friends in trouble or disrupts the class, it shows a heart that needs gentle, consistent training. Proverbs 22:15 tells us Folly is bound up in the heart of a child, but the rod of discipline drives it far from him, and Proverbs 22:6 reminds us to Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. Lying is especially serious before God, and we must lovingly call it what it is. Proverbs 12:22 says Lying lips are an abomination to Yahweh, but those who do the truth are his delight, and Colossians 3:9 says Do not lie to one another, and Exodus 20:16 commands You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. Even if these children are sweet in many ways, defiance, deceit, and disrespect are sin that needs correction, not excused.

We want to encourage you in your calling as a teacher. The Lord has placed you in a position of godly authority to not only teach academics but to model patience, truth, and loving boundaries. We pray you will be given wisdom to be consistent and calm, to set clear expectations and follow through with loving consequences every time, to affirm the good you see in them while not overlooking disobedience. Continue to communicate truthfully and graciously with parents, keeping a record when needed, so that lies do not take root. Ask the Lord for creative ways to help the child who rocks in his chair, perhaps giving him appropriate movement breaks or a clear choice to sit safely or lose the privilege of the chair for a time. Above all, do not grow weary in doing good. Galatians 6:9 says Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we do not give up, and James 1:5 promises If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, and Acts 4:12 says There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by trusting in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we are saved and that our prayers are heard. We come to God only in His name.

Together we pray, Father in heaven, we lift up this teacher and this classroom to You in the name of Jesus Christ. Grant this teacher Your wisdom, patience, strength, and discernment each day. Help these students to have soft hearts to hear and obey the first time, to speak only truth, to respect authority, to be considerate of their classmates, and to take responsibility for their actions. Convict the heart of the child who lies to his parents and who disrupts others, and help him to love truth and to choose what is right. Give the parents eyes to see clearly and to work together with this teacher for the good of the children. Let Your peace rule in this classroom and let Your order and love be evident, so that learning can flourish and these young hearts may grow to honor You. We ask all of this in the precious name of Jesus, Amen.

We hear how exhausting this stretch has been for you. Caring for sweet kids who are also defiant, noisy, and testing every boundary makes it hard to teach and hard to keep the whole class focused. When a student falls from rocking his chair and keeps doing it, lies about what happened at school, and pulls other children into trouble, it can feel discouraging and even personal.

We appreciate your desire that your students grow in respect and in listening the first time. One thing that has helped many teachers is holding both warmth and clear structure together. Respect grows best when children feel safe and valued, even while boundaries stay steady.

A next step that may help is to pick one or two behaviors to address consistently for a few weeks, rather than all at once. For example, choose the chair rocking and the noises during instruction. Explain the expectation once, privately and calmly when possible, and follow through the same way every time with a brief, kind correction. A quick private check-in with that student at a calm moment, asking what makes it hard to stay seated or quiet, often opens a door that public correction does not. Keeping a short daily note of what actually happened can also make conversations with parents more factual and less heated, and give you support if you need to involve another staff member.

We are praying for you and your class.

Father, we lift this teacher to You and ask for renewed strength and wisdom for each day in the classroom. Give clarity in how to lead with both kindness and firmness, and bring more peace and focus to the room so all the students can learn. Help communication with parents be truthful and calm. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your labour in the classroom has not escaped the eye of the Lord, and He knows the weariness that comes from repeating an instruction, from watching a child rock and fall and yet return to the same folly, from hearing untruths spoken and seeing disorder sown among others.

There is comfort in this, that God Himself is our Teacher, and He is not satisfied with giving us a Book only, but He Himself teaches. Was there ever a Teacher so full of wisdom, so well acquainted with His pupils, so patient, so able to apply His lessons to the heart itself. Happy are those who have God to be their Tutor. And as He teaches us, so He enables us to teach others. He is a condescending Teacher and a wise Teacher, and He stoops to the youngest and most wayward scholar. What a kind and patient Teacher the Lord our God is.

You speak of sweet children who are yet defiant, who will not hearken at the first word, who love noise and restlessness and will not pick up what they have cast down. This is the old nature of children who are corrupters, an evil and stiff necked generation who do not learn even when God Himself becomes their Teacher. Yet we are not left without hope, for the Holy Spirit is the Teacher of the Church, and although He uses the Book and the ministry of the Word, still our true Teacher is God the Holy Spirit, who can guide into all truth and bring to remembrance what has been taught. Even with Christ for a Teacher the disciples did not learn without the teaching of the Holy Spirit, how much more do these little ones need His work within.

You have need of patience, and you have heard of the patience of Job. That patience was not the patience of a perfect man, but of one tried by many afflictions, and it became a power for good to all ages. Grains of truth are like grains of gold in the river, they must be shaken by the hand of patience and washed in the stream of honesty. Go to the Spirit, the great Teacher, and ask His sacred influence, and He shall guide you and your scholars. Grace itself has a discipline, and a wonderful training power, teaching us to deny ungodliness and to live soberly and righteously. The discipline of grace has three results, denying, living, looking, and it trains the soul to holiness because we are the disciples of that grace.

Therefore be steadfast and count the cost as a good soldier under discipline, for our glorious Captain, the Lord Jesus Christ, calls us to a strict and loving discipline. As a steward you will give an account of your stewardship, not for numbers only but for faithfulness in the little things, in the repeated word spoken in love, in the correction given without harshness, in the prayer offered when the chair rocks again and the noise rises. Be firm and kind, require obedience at the first telling, require truthful lips and hands that restore what they have dropped, and do it with cords of love and bands of a man, that the children may learn gratitude as well as order.

Let us pray together.

O Lord, our heavenly Teacher, who has taught Thy people from their youth, look upon this classroom and upon this faithful teacher. Grant great patience under trial, wisdom to apply the lesson to the heart, and grace to persevere when the ear seems dull. Work by Thy Holy Spirit upon these children, give them respectful hearts that hearken at the first word, truthful tongues that speak no falsehood, quiet spirits that love order and consider one another, and hands ready to make amends. Let Thy discipline rest upon them for their good, and let this teacher be sustained and encouraged, knowing that Thou seest every faithful effort and wilt bless it in Thy season. For Jesus Christ's sake, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Heavenly Father, we bring these students before You and we bring their teacher before You. You see each child by name. You know their energy, their talkativeness, their desire to be noticed. Work in their hearts to love what is good, to speak truth, to honor authority, to consider others more than themselves. Give them self control to sit attentively, to listen the first time, to care for what they have been given, to be quiet when quiet is needed so that all may learn. Grant them a spirit of respect and obedience, not from fear alone but from a growing understanding of love for neighbor.

And Father, strengthen this teacher. Grant wisdom to correct with firmness and kindness, to set clear boundaries and hold them with consistency, to speak truth without bitterness when wrongly accused, and to not grow weary in doing good. Fill the classroom with Your peace. Help the teacher to wait on You with patience and to find hope each day in Your promises, knowing that You are at work even when progress is slow. Let the instruction given be received, and let the seed sown bear fruit in due season.

We ask for a calm and focused classroom, for truthful words between school and home, and for growth in courtesy and attention. May these children learn to listen well and to act responsibly, and may their teacher be renewed in strength and joy.

We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, who is patient with us and who perfects us through His grace. Amen.
