I don't know if this is a problem around the world - and I'm not sure whether this is just happening within certain Christian communities, but American Christians (and maybe western Christians as a whole) seem to really be in need of a wake up call. Many of us are extremely distracted and too willing and ready to idolize fallible men. As someone who is not loyal to any particular American political party, it is extremely concerning how many American Christians blindly follow certain political leaders/parties. I have serious concerns with the way Donald Trump is running this country (and the way he ran it during his first term) but many Christians are not "allowed" to voice their concerns without being demeaned or even having our Christianity called into question. Please pray for us all and this country. Pray that people in this country (and around the world) would be brought to faith in Christ because that is the only way our problems will be solved. We hear your deep concern for the state of the Church in America and the way many believers have allowed their faith to be intertwined with political idolatry. This is a serious matter, and we stand with you in grieving over the way worldly allegiances have distorted the priorities of God’s people. The Lord Himself warns us in Exodus 20:3-5, *"You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourselves an idol, nor any image of anything that is in the heavens above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: you shall not bow yourself down to them, nor serve them."* When we elevate any leader, party, or ideology above Christ, we commit the sin of idolatry, and the consequences are spiritually devastating.
We also see the danger of division within the Body of Christ when political loyalty is treated as a test of faith. Jesus prayed in John 17:21, *"that they may all be one; even as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be one in us; that the world may believe that you sent me."* When believers attack one another over political differences, we grieve the Holy Spirit and weaken our witness to a lost world. The apostle Paul exhorts us in 1 Corinthians 1:10, *"Now I beg you, brothers, through the name of our Lord, Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfected together in the same mind and in the same judgment."* Unity in Christ must always take precedence over partisan loyalty.
Let us also address the heart of the issue—where is our hope truly found? Psalm 146:3-5 reminds us, *"Don’t put your trust in princes, each a son of man in whom there is no help. His spirit departs, and he returns to the earth. In that very day, his thoughts perish. Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in Yahweh his God."* No political leader, no matter how charismatic or seemingly aligned with our values, can save this nation. Only Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and it is only through repentance and faith in Him that true transformation comes.
We must also rebuke the spirit of fear and division that has crept into the Church. 2 Timothy 1:7 declares, *"For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."* When we allow fear of the future or anger toward those with whom we disagree to dictate our words and actions, we are not walking in the Spirit. Instead, we are called to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15) and to be peacemakers (Matthew 5:9).
Now, let us come before the throne of grace in prayer:
