Students comparing teachers

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I have a student comparing teachers and being disrespectful, also a coworker who is snobby and disrespectful treating another teacher disrespectfully, in front of other students. Please pray for this in Jesus. Name I pray amen

We join with you in prayer over this difficult situation in your school and we thank you for bringing it before the Lord in Jesus' name. It is painful when respect breaks down, both from a student and from a fellow teacher, and especially when it happens in front of other students who are watching and learning from the example set before them.

Scripture is clear that disrespectful speech and a haughty attitude do not honor God. We are called to honor all people and to show respect where it is due, for God has established order and authority for our good. Romans 13:1 reminds us, Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. And 1 Peter 2:17 says, Honor all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king. When a student compares teachers and speaks disrespectfully, it sows division and undermines the authority God has placed in the classroom. When a coworker acts in a snobby and disrespectful way toward another teacher in front of students, it also harms unity and can cause little ones to stumble. The tongue has great power, as James 3:5-6 warns, So the tongue is also a little member, and boasts great things. See how a small fire can spread to a large forest. And the tongue is a fire.

We gently rebuke the spirit of disrespect and pride in both of these situations, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble as James 4:6 teaches. Such behavior is not of love and does not build up the body of Christ or the community of your school.

We encourage you to respond with both grace and truth. For the student, continue to model and require respect with a gentle but firm spirit, remembering Proverbs 15:1, A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger, and Colossians 4:6, Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. Correct the student privately when possible, explaining that comparing teachers dishonors those whom God has called to teach and disrupts learning for all. For your coworker, if you have relationship and opportunity, consider going to them privately in love as Matthew 18:15 directs, If your brother sins against you, go, show him his fault between you and him alone. Even if you are not the teacher who was directly disrespected, you can be a peacemaker. Matthew 5:9 says, Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God. Pray for wisdom to know when to speak and when to entrust the matter to the Lord and to appropriate leadership, and let your own conduct show integrity as Titus 2:7-8 exhorts, in all things showing yourself an example of good works. In your teaching, show integrity, seriousness, incorruptibility, and soundness of speech that can’t be condemned.

We now pray together.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before Your throne of grace and lift up this classroom and this school to You. Lord, we pray for the student who has been comparing teachers and speaking disrespectfully. Soften this young heart, convict of the need for honor and self-control, and teach this child to speak with respect and kindness. We pray for the students who witnessed the disrespect, that they would not be led astray but would learn to honor authority and love one another. Lord, we also lift up the coworker who has acted in a snobby and disrespectful manner toward another teacher. Humble this heart, Lord, and remove pride. Help this teacher to see the damage that such behavior does and to choose instead words that build up and show honor. Give healing to the teacher who was disrespected in front of students, restore dignity and peace, and strengthen unity among the staff. Grant our dear fellow teacher who submitted this request wisdom, patience, courage, and grace to respond as You would, to be a light and example of Your love in that school. Let Your peace reign in that place and let all that is said and done there bring glory to You. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus, our Lord and intercessor, amen.

We hear how wearing this is, trying to hold a respectful classroom when a student is openly comparing teachers, and then seeing a coworker model that same dismissive attitude toward another teacher in front of students. That puts you in a hard spot and it is understandable you want prayer for it.

When disrespect happens publicly, it affects the whole room. Students watch how adults treat each other and quickly learn what is considered acceptable. Caring about both the student and the colleague, as you do, is a good place to start.

A couple of steady approaches often help with school conflict like this:

For the student, a brief private conversation away from peers can lower defensiveness. Naming the behavior calmly, restating the classroom expectation for how we speak about others, and redirecting to what you need from them going forward keeps the focus on learning rather than on comparison.

For the coworker, it usually helps not to address it in front of students. If you have a workable relationship, a short private word about how it landed, or asking an administrator or trusted mediator to help facilitate a respectful conversation, can provide the structure these tensions need. A good mediator does not take sides but helps each person feel heard while keeping emotions from taking over.

We are praying for wisdom and steadiness for you as you navigate both situations.

Father, we lift up this teacher and this school to You. Grant calm, clear words, protection for the classroom environment, and respect among colleagues and students. Give guidance for the next conversations and peace in the midst of this strain. In Jesus' name, amen.

We have carried your burden to the throne of grace in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, who alone is our Saviour and Advocate.

We pray that the Lord who teaches all who are students in the school of Christ will work in this place of learning. You have described a conflict which is felt keenly, a student showing disrespect by comparing teachers, and a fellow worker acting with pride and treating another teacher with contempt before the young ones. Such things grieve the spirit and disturb the peace of a school, for where honour is withheld and pride is displayed, the heart of instruction is wounded.

We have asked the Father to give you wisdom and quiet grace in this trial. May He teach that student to understand the way of His precepts, to show honour where honour is due and to speak with respect for those set over him. May He humble the heart of your coworker, turning snobbery and harshness into meekness and kindness, and may He comfort and uphold the teacher who has been dishonoured before others. We have prayed also for you, that you may not be overcome by this inward conflict, but that you may stand firm with patience and gentleness, remembering that our conflict is not only with flesh but with the spirit of evil, and that the Spirit of God is able to subdue it.

Our prayer is that Christ, who is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him, would bring peace into that classroom and among the staff, that truth and love would govern every word, and that all, teachers and students alike, would learn to esteem others better than themselves. May the Lord give you strength to model before those students what it is to speak the truth in love and to return good for evil, so that your life may be a lesson even when words fail.

We will continue to pray that the Lord will make His grace and order evident there, and that He will be glorified in how this matter is resolved.
