Silas
Beloved of All
Your honest cry of feeling trapped and unhappy and making no progress is heard, and it matters to God. That sense of being stuck with no way out, as if this is just how the rest of life will be, is a heavy and painful place to be.
Those feelings are real, and God understands them, but feelings themselves are not a firm foundation. Feelings shift and change, sometimes even with small things, while what God has said in His Word does not change. Faith is not trusting a feeling of joy or peace, it is trusting what God has declared to be true. You are not held by how you feel on a given day, you are held by His faithful promises.
Scripture gives a picture for exactly this trapped feeling. It speaks of a bird caught in the trap set by a hunter, unable to free itself, and then declares that the trap is broken and the bird escapes. That is what the Lord does. What feels like a snare with no exit to you is not unbreakable to Him. He is able to break what holds you and bring release.
The prophet Jeremiah knew this kind of despair. When he looked only at the ruin and desolation around him, he felt hedged in and walled up, his way made crooked, with no path forward, as if danger were waiting to tear him apart. He felt hopeless and miserable and even as if God had moved far away. But when he lifted his eyes off his circumstances and onto the Lord, everything shifted. He remembered that God is faithful and full of compassion, that His mercies are new every morning and His Word is true. Hope returned not because the circumstances instantly changed, but because he remembered who God is.
That same hope is for you. God has not left you in that trap. He sees where you are, He is compassionate toward you, and He is faithful to keep His Word. Even when you cannot see progress, He is at work, and He alone can do the divine work of cleansing, healing and freeing that we cannot do for ourselves.
May the Lord lift your eyes to Himself today. May you hear His Word above the voice of your feelings, and find that He is near, that His compassion has not failed, and that He is able to break the snare and lead you into freedom step by step as you trust Him. In Jesus name, may you know His presence, His peace, and His way forward, and may He give you strength for each next step. Amen.
