We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up all those in the path of these relentless storms. The winds howl, the rains pour, and the skies darken, but our God is mightier than any tempest. We stand on the promise of Psalm 46:1-3, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we won’t be afraid, though the earth changes, though the mountains are shaken into the heart of the seas; though its waters roar and are troubled, though the mountains tremble with their swelling."

Father, we ask for Your mighty hand of protection over every home, every family, and every community in the storm’s path. Shield them from harm, Lord, and let no more damage come to their lives or livelihoods. We declare Your word over these storms in Job 38:11, where You say, "Here you may come, but no further. Here your proud waves shall be stayed." We rebuke the power of these storms in the name of Jesus and command them to cease their destruction. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard the hearts and minds of those who are afraid.

We also lift up the first responders, the utility workers, and all those laboring to keep others safe. Strengthen them, Lord, and protect them as they serve. Give them wisdom and endurance, and surround them with Your angels.

For those who may be facing these storms without knowing You, we pray they would turn to Jesus, the only name by which we are saved. There is no other refuge, no other hope, but in Christ alone. We declare Acts 4:12 over their lives, "There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved." May they come to know You as their Savior and find peace in the midst of the storm.

Lord, we trust in You. Even when the winds rage and the waters rise, we will not fear, for You are with us. We thank You for Your faithfulness and ask that You would calm these storms, restore what has been broken, and bring comfort to all who are suffering. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

If you haven’t already, make sure you have a safe place to shelter and a way to receive weather alerts. After the storm passes, reach out to those nearby, sometimes a listening ear or a helping hand with debris is its own kind of answered prayer.

We lift up this region right now. Father, in Jesus’ name we ask for your protection over every person and home in the path of these storms. Still the winds, guard against flood and damage, and give your peace that goes deeper than the loudest thunder. Watch over first responders and all who serve. Comfort those already dealing with loss, and let your presence be felt in every fear-filled moment. We trust you, Lord, and we thank you that you are a refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Amen.

The roar of the storm and the cry of death, as the fruit of sin, are heard in the land, yet there is no attribute of God more comforting to his children than the doctrine of Divine Sovereignty. We must trace Divine Sovereignty in all such cases, and recognize God’s hand in everything. The Lord has declared that he who hath made God his refuge shall abide beneath his shadow, and therefore we may go where duty calls us without trembling.

Christ is the true City of Refuge and He preserves all those who flee to Him for mercy. Divine appointment was the only thing which made the city of refuge secure, now, our Lord Jesus Christ is the Divinely-appointed way of salvation! The curse of the Law of God shall not touch us, Satan shall not harm us, vengeance shall not reach us, for the Divine appointment, stronger than gates of iron or brass, shields everyone of us who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us in the Gospel.

Consider how strikingly God delivers some of us. What remarkable preservations of life we enjoy, not miraculous, certainly, but full of wonder for all that. A man stood like a martyr and held the rope until the storm had abated, and the ship was saved in that terrible storm. So our safety is assured by the fact that we have a God who is able and is as wise as He is able to keep us from falling. He keeps them from falling again into the sins in which they once indulged by a Divine working which is nothing less than a continuous miracle.

Divine interpositions come in the way of deliverance from floods of trouble. Have you not experienced them? How often, when you have had an opportunity to sin, you have not felt the temptation, or when you have been tempted you have not found the opportunity? It is a grand thing to feel that God’s Throne might sooner fail than that a saint can perish, for His Throne, itself, is established in righteousness. His divine Spirit wrought all your works in you, and here you are, praying, with the cry, “He hath delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, and my feet from falling.”

Pray then, and doubt not, for the Divine Presence is the one hope of the people of God. The low tree, fostered by the husbandman, shall mount even to the stars; the dry tree by divine grace shall flourish. Our safety lies in our Savior, God our Savior.

When the storm rages and the floods rise, the natural heart trembles, and you have done well to cry out for mercy and for the safety of your neighbors. But understand that the greatest storm is never the one that rattles the windows, but the one that stirs within the soul. It is not the nature of circumstances that makes the tempest, but the condition of our mind. If we so order the mind that it may bear all things contentedly, we shall have no storm nor even a ripple, but always a clear calm. Pray then not only that the wind cease, but that your heart become a heaven, bright and unshaken, far above the clouds. Heaven does not itself change in a storm; it remains pure and high, untouched by the rains below. So let the soul be: withdraw it from the earth, exalt it to that height where tribulations cannot reach, for we have the Sun of Righteousness shining within us, and He is Lord even of the storm.

Do not think that safety means only the sparing of rooftops, for the true damage is the one suffered by the soul when it is not warned or corrected. If we fail to use even such trials as a sharp rebuke to wake us from sin, the injury remains, and it is a damage both to you and to us. Godly sorrow over sin works repentance unto salvation, a sorrow that brings no regret, unlike the vain grief over lost goods. The man who sorrows for loss of wealth repairs no damage, but he who sorrows for his sins attains a real advantage. Let these outward storms become an occasion to examine the inward wreckage: the casting away of temperance, the paralysis of virtue, the whirling desire that leaves the soul like a hull after a shipwreck. If you have not yet resisted unto blood striving against sin, then see in every blast a call to the strictest circumspection.

Trust that the Lord sees your need and knows that you go not aimlessly into trial, but toward villages of His own purpose. He who is conscious of no evil shall suffer nothing dreadful in the final reckoning; but even now, the one who follows after virtue stands superior to all that despitefully use us, enjoying a great calm not in fair weather alone, but when the temptations are continual. That safety no diadem can provide, yet it is offered freely through Jesus Christ alone. Pray then for deliverance, but pray more that your own soul and those of your household be made a clear sky, unmoved by terror, anchored in the ship of faith where the true Steersman brings all to safe harbor. Amen.

The roar of a storm has a way of shrinking us down to size. It strips away every illusion of control we cling to on a calm day. When the wind howls and the rain lashes the window, we feel the truth in our bones: we are small, and the forces around us are mighty. That feeling of helplessness is not a failure of faith; it is simply the human condition facing the raw power of creation.

And yet, it is precisely in that place of helplessness that our footing is truly tested. Scripture gives us that unmistakable picture of two houses, one built on sand, the other on rock. The same ferocious storm beats against both of them. The rain descends, the floods come, the winds blow and beat on both houses. The storm is no respecter of persons; it will strike the wise and the foolish alike. The only thing that determines whether the house stands or collapses into ruin is what it was anchored to long before the first dark cloud appeared on the horizon.

That is the difference. A life built on any foundation other than Jesus Christ, whether it is built on material security, human strength, or just a vague hope that things will work out, is a house built on sand. That foundation cannot hold. When the floodwaters rise and the bank of good fortune fails, everything resting on it gets swept away. But a life anchored to the Rock is secured by something deeper than the seabed. I do not care how high the water gets or how violently the waves hammer, the one who trusts in the Lord will be sustained through it. They will see it through to the other side.

This does not mean we do not pray for the wind to relent or for property to be spared. We do. We ask God to shield our homes and our communities from further damage, because He is merciful. But we must also recognize that sometimes the forbidding weather serves a purpose we cannot immediately see. In the book of Job, God finally speaks, and He does not speak from a tranquil sunset. He answers His servant out of the whirlwind. The very storm that looks like a threat becomes the theater of His voice. Sometimes, God uses the rattling of our physical world to hush the noise inside our souls, to draw us to examine ourselves, and to make us realize that our truest safety is not in a cleared sky, but in a cleared perspective.

So as you face the squall over these next several days, let it drive you deeper into that safety. We may not be able to direct the track of the storm or calm the circular winds with a word, but we know the One who can. Trust Him to preserve what is necessary and to hold you steady when you are exceedingly tossed. And when the storm has spent its fury and a quiet hush returns, the house built on the Rock will remain, not because its timbers were stronger, but because its foundation was eternal.

Let me pray with you now:
Father, we feel our smallness before this weather, and we acknowledge our total dependence on You. We ask for Your hand of protection over all who are in the path of these storms. Spare lives, spare homes, and limit the damage. But even more, Lord, secure our hearts to the Rock that is Jesus Christ. Let the wind and rain drive us to that sure foundation. Speak into our lives through this whirlwind, and grant us a peace that surpasses the barometer reading. In the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
