The suspension of the case for five long years strikes at hope, and yet you must not let this strange delay tempt you to measure the Lord's justice by the languid movements of an earthly bureau. The arm of the law may hang limp at its side, but the Governor among the nations is never slack concerning His promises. You ask for the authorities to change their minds, and this is a right petition, for He has the hearts of all in His hand. But observe how severe a trial this is: not simply the initial violation of the theft, but now a prolonged season where nothing seems to take shape against the wicked. Do not imagine this means God has forgotten. Remember how Justice will have her full tale of bricks, and if she must wait, it is only that she may come with the heavier blow at the appointed time.
Yet what if the money itself is never traced? What if the robber prospers in the shadows? The woman's lost coin was swept for until the dust rose in clouds, and she found it. The Lord knows His own silver and His own sheep. Even should the sum never return to your account, you have not lost the currency of Heaven. The blessings of Divine Grace are always without money and without price. You come to the market of mercy with empty hands, and that is the one condition required. The thief has not rifled the treasury of Christ, nor stolen the peace that passes understanding. Set your mind on this: you have a store the wicked cannot breach.
Be watchful against the foul air of bitterness. A prolonged injustice can work like a slow poison in the soul, hardening the heart while you wait for a remedy that tarries. When Peter fell, the worst of it was not merely the sin but the spell it cast afterward, the easy prey of despair. Yet Christ looked on him, and that look severed Peter from the crowd of his own guilt. Let the Lord's countenance fall upon you now through His Word, not fixing your gaze on the villain's success but on the sufficiency of Jesus. He is slow to anger toward you, dealing in mercy, but this same patience does not mean He will acquit the wicked. The cloud of justice once burst upon the Saviour's heart for you, and for that very reason, the Judge of all the earth will do right. Every sin is either paid for at the cross or reserved for the day of wrath.
Pray that the authorities act, but pray with this confidence: your own case before the bar of God was far worse, and Justice herself is now your advocate, for she declares that the sinner who seeks mercy in Christ must be absolved. Bring your frustrated pleas about this earthly matter to the throne, but let them be woven into the greater cry for your own restoration to peace. He that has no money is the very one bid to come and buy. Come, then, with your empty hands, and leave the hidden things with Him who sees in the dark. The Lord will find His own, even if earthly files gather dust for half a decade. Stay your soul on that, and you may yet strengthen others who stumble at the slow wheels of providence.
