How the wicked seem to prosper, and how the righteous often suffer loss! It is a sore trial when not only is your substance taken, but when those appointed to uphold justice fold their hands and tell you the case must lie dormant for five long years. Yet let us not forget that the Lord is slow to anger, and that His justice, though it may seem to slumber, is not extinguished. The arm of the law may be suspended, but the arm of the Lord is not shortened that it cannot save, nor His ear heavy that it cannot hear. Cry to Him for mercy, for if you would plead for justice concerning your stolen money, remember that you too, apart from Christ, are a debtor to divine justice. What a wonder that He who had no money to pay his sin-debt found grace without money and without price! The loss of a few coins may teach you to value the unsearchable riches of Christ, which no thief can steal and no moth corrupt.
You pray for restoration. It is good and right to bring this temporal need before the throne, and the Lord, who restoreth the soul, can restore the stolen goods if it pleaseth Him. But I would have you look to a higher restoration, the restoration of your own heart to unwavering trust. Peter’s fall was turned to restoration by a look from Christ, and that same look, full of infinite tenderness, can lift you above despair. When justice delays, when the robber walks free, it is easy to grow bitter; but the look of Jesus severs you from the crowd of murmurers and reminds you that you were forgiven a debt of ten thousand talents. Shall you then take your fellow servant by the throat over a few pence? No, let your prayer be first, “Have mercy upon me, O God, according to Thy lovingkindness,” and then, with a cleansed heart, plead for temporal justice. God can be just and yet the justifier of him that believeth; and when His justice is satisfied at the cross, it is no longer your enemy. So, beloved, cast your care upon Him. He can turn the heart of the authorities as the rivers of water; a word from Him and the case may be reopened, the thief discovered, the money restored. But if not, remember that the woman’s lost piece of silver was found after diligent sweeping, and the Lord will find His own, even though Satan try to hinder. Wait patiently, trust wholly, and let not your faith be suspended even if the case be suspended. The Lord liveth, and He shall judge the earth in righteousness, and then every secret thing shall be brought to light. In the meantime, buy of Him wine and milk without money and without price. Come, buy, and eat, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. He that hath Christ hath all.
Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have.
